He was so quick. I phoned the vet, I was told to give him 1TBSP of peroxide to induce vomiting. I search on my trusty OES Forum for past posts...found the same info from a member. Gave Howie the peroxide...5 minutes later outside on the snow up comes a sock and his supper! He wanted to cuddle for a few minutes, then went for a nap. I can breathe again. How long should I wait before I give the him some food? peg & sock eater howie |

Thank Goodness the sock came up! Socks are the number one reason dogs have to have surgery for a blockage so be glad it came out with no problem! As far as eating...I would give him some bland food tonight. Maybe boiled chicken and over- cooked rice. Maybe give a pepcid Ac about half and hour before. Followed by a Gas X about an hour later - just in case there is some excess gas in the tummy. His tummy might be a little "sore" from the vomitting and the sock coming up irritating his throat too. So glad it came out. These dogs make us into neat freaks don't they! |
Oh how scary. You have just inspired me to get off my butt and get my laundry sorted, it is all over the place. Socks everywhere! |
Thank goodness the sock reappeared! I'm so lucky, Tiggy just grabs laundry and dashes up and down the corridor waving it happily like a victory flag but she never eats it. |
Luckily Butch does the same as Tiggy but try to keep all things away from him just in case. |
We are very tidy now since Howie joined our household. He loves to take off and run down the hall with scarves and hats, but he never tries to eat them. Seems only socks that have been worn are his choice of clothing treat. I waited about 2 hrs and gave him some food prior to bedtime. Howie ate it, and it satyed doen. This morning I have my happy, bouncy, hungry pup back. Anyone else's sheepie eat clothing? How does one train a dog not to touch socks? peg |
pegspup wrote: Anyone else's sheepie eat clothing? How does one train a dog not to touch socks? peg Talk to Tracie. Rudy ate a sock that almost killed him. Very scary stuff. |
Training a dog to drop anything out of its mouth on command isn't so easy but it can be done and does take many repititions. I wouldn't practice on socks. the worst thing to do is to start to chase the dog yelling, oh, no, gimme the sock! Dog thinks its a game. Best way to keep socks out of their mouth? Don't leave them on the floor or where they can get them! |
Glad he threw it up! After reading about poor Rudy's sock adventures, it makes me paranoid about them. I gotta keep the house cleaner! |
OMG...thank goodness you saw it go down. We didn't see the one Rudy ate go down, and by the time we knew for sure we were so close to losing him. My heart stopped when I read your post. I'm so glad it worked out. We've worked on leave it and drop it and on putting things on the floor and trying to teach Rudy that these things belong to us and not to him, but the bottom line is that since he's eaten socks before he will forever be at risk for doing it again. We will never be able to let our guard down. I've been told he may one day outgrow it, but I don't know if I'll ever trust him. I am also a natural born slob, so this has been really tough for me, and my hubby is really absent minded, so it's a constant battle. Hugs to you both. Again, I am so happy you saw it go down and were able to get it back out right away. What amazingly good luck. And how scary that it only takes a second. |
Thanks everyone. It was from reading your post Tracie about Rudy terrible experience that got me into emergency mode. When the sock went down his throat I knew I could not just wait it out. If I had not read Rudy's tale I would have just said to my husband "let's wait until morning and see if it passes." I am lucky that my husband is a picker-uper by nature, and I tend to like things put away too. It is just scary how fast a dog can get into trouble even with diligent care. Like you Tracie with Rudy, we will be forever extra mindful with our socks. thanks, peg & sock eater howie |
fyi; those that eat socks can be very much attracted to ladies panties also. |
Wow. That's scary. Our OES is obsessed with socks and if you leave one on the floor and take your eye off it for a millisecond, she will grab it. She also lurks around laundry baskets. We have baby gates up to keep her from getting into areas where she might get this stuff, but every now and then she makes a sneaky dash for it. |
I'd watch your girl for sure, but, our Hudson loves to steal socks and would never, ever swallow one. We have had lots of sneaky sheepie sock thieves, but Rudy's our first eater. It's awful. |

Most of the time he just flings it around and around but sometimes he'll start chewing. Luckily we can usually have him drop it with an ice cube bribe... Glad everyone is ok!!! |
The first time I saw Mady with a sock (not long after Rudy's misadventure), I grabbed it from her and I yelled at her. Mady is a big softie and she takes any raised voices at her very hard. But it is very effective. I only use this for crucial safety issues, not regular training. We still wont leave any socks around, not worth the risk. |
I don't really see how all these dogs are getting socks??! Are they stealing them from your dresser drawers? Pulling them off your feet? |

At our house clothes are in the hamper, the washer/dryer or put away in our bedroom (our bedroom is gated too). Seems odd to have your clothes out in the house for the dogs to eat..... This whole topic is just odd, and finally I had to reply! |

Well of course, Kim is supposed to put my socks in the hamper after she picks them up off the floor! (ok, I'm seriously looking to get in big trouble here, maybe I should stick a sock in it) |

In my case, I had just arrived home from a walk, took off my boots, and damps socks at the backdoor as not to walk through the house with wet feet. It really was seconds that it took howie to come up from behind me and grab the sock and eat it. I was sitting putting on my dry socks when I heard him swallow . We have 2 laundry hampers in our house with lids...howie has learn how to pop the lid open. I am going to build a laundry shute so everything goes straight to the laundry room away from the dog! peg |
We had our dirty clothes in a lidded laundry hamper but Butchy chewed the lid. Once the clothes level gets higher it gets stuck on top of Carl's night stand. When I wash the clothes are out on the floor but after a few times we've convinced him to leave them alone. It wasn't socks he was after but mostly clothes and then he'd lay on them. |

Just noticed this now. I am giving David a ten second head start. |
haha This should be good! |
Who won?? |
No further posts--should we worry! |
David won't be posting for awhile, he is too busy doing housework! |
I hope he picked up all the socks! |
