Here's what I say,
Yup. |
I know when my two play rough I can always tell who got the best of who by what color clumps I find on the floor! |
He must be catching it on something while running by, or playing rough with something. It is not normal for him to shed at all at that age, so I would keep an eye on him and see what is causing it, just in case he is injuring himself under the fur as well. Some puppy proofing may be in order, you'd be amazed what they find at their level that we simply don't notice until they have pointed it out to us somehow.
He may be scratching it out, so I would also check for parasites like fleas or mites, and take a close look at his skin to see if it looks normal and not beginning to show signs of mange. He is probably due for another set of shots at that age? It is worth mentioning to the vet if you're in anyway |
I'll definitely keep an eye on him, he was just in for his shots last week and has a clean bill of health, no fleas, parasites, skin problems of any kind. I brush him as best I can about every other day, tomorrow he is getting his first puppy grooming |
Max certainly shouldn't be blowing coat and if healthy he won't "shed" per ce. Your description of "clumps" seems to confirm that. Even though he is free from parasites and skin conditions is his hair dry or brittle? Although spring is now finally upon us it has been a long winter of closed up houses and heating so Max's hair and skin are likely at their dryest as is the case for many uprights.
If the hair loss doesn't return to normal rates within a week try some food supplements to help the skin and coat, an Omega 3 addative or fish with it's oil (Inexpensive pink salmon is ideal and he'll likely love it.) Just be very careful to go easy on the amount, no more than a 1/4 can per meal, two meals per day, once or twice a week. You might also want to use a bit more conditioner in his next bath and let it sit longer to help out if the hair is actually dry and brittle. Just be careful to rinse it out really well before drying him. Hope Max's hair picks up and you have a good few months yet before blowing coat sets in!! Thanks and Cheers Carl |
I'm finding the same thing with Bailey - I'm pretty sure it's from him scratching or chewing on himself. We've also noticed that he looks a little dandruffy when we brush him. We came to the same conclusion about dry skin. We were going to consult with our vet to see if we should add some canned food (he's only on dry) or some other supplements. The pink salmon sound like an interesting treat! |
Thanks everyone for advice, Just curious what is a normal amount of hair for a puppy to shed at this age? |
Normal would be none. You should be able to run your hands over him and have no hair fly off at all as a pup, even at 9 months and 15 months I don't get any hairs coming off my girls unless I brush, and using a pin brush there is almost no hair coming out even during grooming. Less than half a handful for the whole dog. |
tecumseh is 12 weeks, and i get a lot off him and find it floating around |
I found that loose hair from long hair dogs will tend to clump -- observations from owning Collies in the past and the Barney. Compared with my sons German Short hair pointer, whose little hairs would cover the floor and fly all over the place. |
Thank goodness I'm not the only one! I've noticed little black clumps of hair laying around too - and I didn't think they blew their coat this soon. I'm going to be taking Momo to the vet on either Friday or Monday to get this all sorted out.
I am with her all the time (she is always in the room with me) and I haven't been seeing her tug her fur out... but she has been whimpering and scratching a bit... but we got her flea meds... so I'm not sure what's up with her. I guess mites aren't out of the question... But we do have lots of mosquitos around here... |
