I give human glucosamine chondroitin with either hyaluronic acid or MSM to Chewie (OES) and Simon (senior basset). I started with Chewie at a little over a year, and Simon about age 7. Chewie's pretty active, and I'm hoping to prevent or minimize any issues down the road. Simon at the time was a very active Basset - doing rally with jumps, therapy dog - even walking miles in parades, and he's even done lure coursing. Now he's almost 12 and definitely a senior. Once several years ago he went almost a week without it (we were on vacation and I forgot it) and he started to limp. As soon as it was resumed and back in his system for several days, he went back to normal. I stopped it when he recently was very ill and almost died, but I have restarted it as part of his daily diet. Chewie also gets an extra strength Tums a day as well. Mostly for preventing coat staining, but I figure the calcium won't hurt either. And mine all get a fish oil cap too There are tons of supplement choices out there, both human and dog ones. |
We use a chewable tablet, GlykoFlex 11. Started to ue it when my then 10 month old pulled something in her leg after running causing her to limp. We started using it and now use it daily for both. |
The earlier you start probably the more you'll offset problems later...especially if your pup is already of "questionable" hip quality. Then again, a simple booboo early in life can come back to haunt the dog later....like MO and her paw arthritis. Calcium, glucosamine, fish oil are all good supplements......vet really pushes fish oil. |
