He is going to the vet this afternoon. Please pray for him. We know every day now is a blessing but we are NOT prepared for him to leave us. I know right now it is his quality of life that is the priority but I am just having a breakdown everytime I think about the inevitable. After what we went through with Sammy a year and half ago, I really don't know how I will be able to get throught this. |

Big hugs to you Max Best wishes to Max, and I hope you get some good news from your vet visit today. I hope it's something you can work with and be able to enjoy your Max even longer. Simon and Harley send some healing basset drool (it's all the rage with basset people, and proven very successful in times of need) to Max as well. |
Lots of prayers for you and Max. Let us know what the vet says. He is a cutie! |
Prayers for you; hope you have some good news and like Dawns Bassets, Tripper the basset, adds his drool also. |

how is he today? |
Thank you everyone for your prayers and loving concern. The tests came back today and Max has kidney failure. He is back at the hospital on intravenous liquids for 3 days. He has very high levels of phosphorus. Vet says they have seen good results with the fluids getting the numbers back down to acceptable levels. If that happens then the prognosis is good if we follow a protocol of fluids and medication for an extended period of good quality life. We will know in 48 hours if this treatment will work. If it doesn't, then it looks like we will need to consider the unthinkable. So please continue sending prayers and positive vibes to brave Max. Also Harley and the other Bassetts, keep sending that drool. Max needs all the help he can get. I held him very close today and he still tried to kiss me. But he looked very weak and did not want to eat. Has anyone experienced kidney failure with their dog? I really appreciate all your concern. |
Prayers for Max. And OUR Max is sending his Sheepie kisses and good vibes too. |
Hoping for the best for Max! We haven't experienced kidney failure with any of our dogs--but did go through it with our 13 year old cat. The IV fluids and meds worked for a period of time for him. He bounced back quite well after the first treatment. We were able to enjoy him for about another 8 months before the treatments were not effective. It might be quite different with dogs--not sure. Special thoughts-prayers and to you all. |
Thanks for the update. Will keep you and Max close in thought and heart. Hoping Max responds well. |
Sending positive thoughts and virtual hugs to you, Max and your family. |
Brave little Max is fighting for his life. His poor old heart couldn't handle the rate of fluids they were giving him. They had to dial back the amount which means it's not as effective to flush out his kidneys. They also heard fluid in his lungs last night. One good sign was he was eager to eat when they offered him food but later vomited again. They gave him some meds to help him keep his food down. Blood tests will be done later this afternoon to see if the treatment is working at all. I visited him this morning and he looked better than I expected. He was alert and aware of me. I held him for half hour and even though I tried very hard, I broke down the minute I saw him and used up a whole box of kleenex. I am staying optimistic but prepared for the worst. We will know very soon. |

Janet...my prayers and thoughts are with you and Max.... |
Thinking of you! |
sadly I think most of us dog owners have been where you are now. To see a dog go down hill is heartbreaking. But cherish the fact that you have given Max the best life and love he could have and watched over him always. What better life for a dog. Prayers on their way for max and you. |
Prayers and hugs for you and Max |
Max's levels have not come down. However, his lungs sound much better. They are now increasing the fluids again...at much smaller increments. Still has not eaten anything. Very sick puppy. Fight my darling Max....you are so brave and tough. Max at Christmas: |
