I use a few brushes on Buffy but this one I think works best http://www.animalaffair.com.au/slicker-brush-p-316.html |
I fear there is no one brush that does the job. Or maybe there is, and I'm just a far less competent groomer than I need to be. However if I had to boil it down to 5 tools I couldn't live without, they'd be the following... Chris Christensen Gold pin brush: http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... _Pin_Brush CC Slicker (I have it in three sizes): http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... er_Brushes an Untangler Comb (I love these; and my sensitive dog doesn't mind it one bit): http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... gler_Combs a long toothed mat breaker: http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... tting_Comb and a short toothed mat breaker: http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/ ... at_Remover I also use a little flea comb to clear any tangles from the coats once I'm done. You know the ones; you've pulled all the mats but sometimes they remain in the coat, even though they aren't attached to the skin any more? Those little guys I call "seed mets"; if they don't get removed I'm convinced new mats will grow from them! |
Wood pins work best on a mat-free coat so don't consider it your primary brush. Slickers will remove undercoat along with the mats so if you don't mind a thinner coat that mats less easily, try one of those. Everyone has a different opinion on brushes and each OES has a different coat texture. It usually takes a few tries to find the perfect one for your dog. |
This is hands-down, the best brush I own. I have one OES with a really thick coat and one with a softer fine coat and I use it on both of them as a primary brush. It preserves a lot of the undercoat bu will also get through tangles with no problem. http://www.lespoochs.com/brush-matz.asp I also like the Chris Christensen pin brushes and smaller slickers for the smaller and more delicate areas. |
This is actually my favorite: http://www.lespoochs.com/brush-purple.asp in the wide version but $85 is a bit pricey for one brush. Mine has lasted several years and is still going strong so no complaints here. |
If both Nita and Jill recommend it, then I must own one! I'm going to have a chance to check out Westminster (I'm so excited!!!) this year, I wonder if I can buy one there? |

You probably can.....along with an $8.00 hot dog too! No seriously, the vendors are packed back in the benching area. Depends on which vedors are there as to what is available. |
Or better yet, Allison, Les Pooch or one of their distributors may exhibit at the Atlanta Pet Fair |
I read it on a grooming forum that they can get a 40% discount ordering directly from the manufacturer when ordering 24 or more. Perhaps we can organize a group order here as well? I also really like my green double wide Les Pooch brush. My CC gold pin brush was my favorite one until Les Pooch came along. |

I don't know if I've ever seen Les Pooch set up anywhere but that definitely doesn't mean that they don't, especially since most of the shows we go to aren't huge. I bought mine on eBay-- Les Pooch retail was $105 but I think I paid $70. It was well worth the money. It's comfortable to use and actually feels like a well made brush. I have an identical style brush that I bought for like $20 and it doesn't even compare. I'll be sitting around all day at Westminster during the benching, Allison, so you're welcome to check mine out if they don't have a booth. Hot dogs are only $8? That sounds like a heck of a deal in NYC! |

I'm really looking forward to seeing you at Westminster, and to meeting Owen! |
i am definatly a les pooches fan too!! either the red or the purple you can get a cheeper version too http://www.groomers-online.com/product. ... er-brushes but only one side is any good as the other one is just straight, ok for a spare! |
Maggie McGee IV wrote: Or better yet, Allison, Les Pooch or one of their distributors may exhibit at the Atlanta Pet Fair I just got my Pet Fair catalog today, and saw the dates... we're going to be out of town and unable to attend! |

I wanted to come down for the APF but we'll be in Myrtle Beach during that time. Guess my $$$ is safe for now. |
Why can't it be February 4? I'll be in Atlanta for a conference then. |
I think we all have our favourite brushes. Guinness and I went through about 10 brushes before we found the ones we use now. Unfortunately they seem to be discontinued but what we have is a normal brush with the meeds in the form of a inverted "v". I like it because you can change the angle that you work on the mat |
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about the best brush to use. |

Let me see what the conference schedule looks like and if I'm promised to do things. A colleague of mine and I are actually presenting at this thing so, unlike most other conferences I go to, I have actual work to do! I think this involves some lunches and dinners with people. I'm sure they'll be a free evening somewhere, though. I'll let you know the details as soon as I have them! |

I completely understand; our conventions are much the same. but if you find yourself with a free hour or two, or if you need a ride from the airport, please don't hesitate to drop me a line! |
It will depend on whether you want to show the dog or not, as to which brush to use. If you don't want to show, then you won't need to worry about preserving coat. A good cushioned pin brush is probably best, but don't have one with "bobbles" on the end of the pins, as that tears the coat. It's probably best to spray the coat with clear water (don't soak it - just a light spray) then it's easier to brush through. However, if you wan't to show the dog, then you will need the pin brush, but also a bristle and nylon brush (Mason & Pearson are the best - but very expensive). When brushing the dog you need to get right down to the skin, so, if there are any thick parts use your index fingers and thumbs to pull the matts apart, then gently use the pin brush to dissolve the matt. Once you have done the dog all over with the pin brush then a light brush with the Mason Pearson should be used to finish it off. Whereabouts in South Africa are you, I know several people in the Johannesburg area, as well as people near Cape Town, who would help you if you get stuck. |
To arthrug, Not sure how to do replies on the site so here goes. Thanks for the info, I have now bought Madan brushes and they seem to be doing the trick, they are a lot kinder on the dog than the plush puppy pin brush I was using. Its still such a big job! I dont show the dogs but they have to look good as they do promotions for Dulux paint. I live in Johannesburg so if you can put me in touch with other oes owners, think I know them though as there are so few of us in South Africa. Also looking to breed with my male so if you know anyone with a bitch in South Africa let me know. My bitches are unfortunately spayed. Regards Sue |
Best would be to speak to Jackie Mackenzie, her email address is bobwynbobtails@yahoo.com Hope she will be able to help you |
