Occasional pain, limping on front leg.

My OES pup is 7 months old. About a month ago she was running and playing in the back yard and slipped on some leaves. She slid to the ground and cried out in pain, then got up limping on her right front leg. It was really scary. But after a minute she seemed fine, no limping, was running around again, etc. Now just last night she was sound asleep on the kitchen floor and suddenly screamed out in pain. At first we thought she was having a dream, but then she stood up and was limping badly again on the same leg as when she slipped on the leaves. I was terrified. But when I held the leg or squeezed it or moved it around, she didn't react at all. Again, after a couple minutes she was fine and seemed back to normal. This morning she was tearing around the yard as usual. What is going on? This is scaring me! Have you ever heard of anything like this?

ONe of my two dogs had a mystery limp while she was growing up; from about 6 months to about 18 months. It would come and go--though without any sign of pain. We had her at the ver several times, and even had x-rays done. In the ned, the vet decided it was growing pins and would pass. And they did.

Are you feeding a puppy food specifically for large breed dogs? I've heard that anything else will cause growth to be too rapid, and more painful. Also, I'd put a call into your vet, to be on the safe side.

We are feeding Royal Canin puppy food for large breed, and that's supposed to be decent. Tried other brands and they gave her horrible gas.

I was wondering if it might be a growth thing, but it does scare me. She does happen to be a very sensitive dog. If you bump into her or accidentally stand on her hair while she's lying beside you (it's a lot of hair! it gets underfoot sometimes!), she cries like she's being tortured. Drama queen a little bit I think. Meanwhile, my son can play pretty rough with her and she loves every minute of it--not one yelp or whine or bit of drama. I'll call the vet and see what he says. Kinda hoping it's not "Bring her in for $1,000 worth of X-rays," but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I went through a medical mystery thing with my last dog, a mutt. She kept getting lumps on her body--cysts. The vet did surgery after surgery to remove the lumps and biopsy them, and they were always benign. Spend hundreds and hundreds on this, not to mention the discomfort/pain to my poor dog. Within a year she was dead of cancer. How did the vet do all that work over a year and not discover that my dog had cancer (which was eventually diagnosed at an emergency vet via simple blood test)?! We switched vets.
It can all be so frustrating, and even heart breaking!

Tonks is also a drama queen. She'll cry at the slightest hair tug while grooming, but then wrestle all over the house with Adam or Luna.
If you saw her skid and get hurt, it may be a strain of some kind

or....

Maybe Pano????..
Heart was diagnosed with Pano when she was about 4 months old.. I had to put her on Adult food and the limping and pain disappeared quickly with no problems since..

FYI, here is some info on PANO from a Rottie's website....

I would get her to your vet, just in case there is an injury.

Good Luck and please keep us posted!!!!!!

Thank you all so much. I had never heard of PANO, and that sounds pretty much like what we're experiencing. She has seemed to grow quickly lately. She's seven months old and 54 lbs (I think she gained 4 lbs. in the last month, but does not seem overweight and is not a chowhound). The breeder thought she would be on the smaller side, maybe about 65 lbs. full grown. Will she really only gain ten or eleven lbs. between 7 months and adulthood? I'll get a vet appointment and see what's going on.
Good idea. Let the vet have a look. Insist on an xray in case. Waking up with it would concern me.....she wasn't using it at the time. (was shee sleeping on top of it?) Hopefully minor and will go away.
Definitely see your vet. There are lots of things it could be...many are easily treated.

One of ours had an OCD lesion (a piece of cartilage had broken off...looked like a small stone that was free floating in his knee). When the piece was resting somewhere that it didn't cause trouble he was perfect, but when it would lodge somewhere owie, he was in pain. It took a surgery to correct, but it was worth it. He had an instant cure.

I've no idea what's going on with your pup, but it's definitely vet worthy, especially since she's still growing. If it is something that needs attention, you want to resolve it right away so it doesn't have a negative impact on her long term growth. Good luck to you both.
About the weight gain -

That sounds about right. 54 pounds at 7 months sounds reasonable to end up about 65#. Especially if it's a fit and not chubby adult weight. If you overfeed, sure she could get to 75-80....but that would not be good! :(

She would be somewhat in between the 2 here. Siblings Chewie (70#) and sister Martha (a petite 55# - she's my daughter's dog) are both about the same amount of weight carrying to match their respective builds. Chewie actually feels bonier, as he's much more an athlete than sister Martha. She really prefers to lounge and be the princess, with the daily spurts of activity....just to prove she can still beat her brother up when they get together!

We have an xray set up for next week to check for Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD). The vet is first going to rotate her shoulders-he says he can actually tell a lot just from doing that. So we'll see. Hoping she doesn't have OCD, but I'll keep you all posted. Would like to not need a surgery! She's just about to be spayed and I'm worried enough about that. :(
