As a tribute to these ladies the entire community placed white lights in their trees. People came from all over to view the display which featured five blocks of lights. Over time colored lights were added and people started decorating their homes. Thousands came to view the lights. Eventually, someone thought that perhaps tickets could be sold at the local corner store for 2 dollars to choose their favorite decorated house and the proceeds would go to various charities like an Aids Hospice House or to an agency which helps the poorest folks in the city. Businesses donated prizes to the winners but everything was done in friendly competition. The neighborhood has raised thousands of dollars each Christmas season and showed how a community can pull together to turn good from something that was a tragedy. This is my mothers home |
