Poppyseed cake emergency

Doesn't SEEM like an emergency to most normal people, but you don't have a Ukrainian mother who is just about going crazy with a problem. She has been making poppyseed cake since she was in the womb. Her cakes are wonderful. But twice in the last year she has had a problem where the poppyseeds end up falling down to the bottom of the cake pan while the cake is cooking, instead of being distributed evenly throughout. She has made 3 cakes today and thrown them all out, as this keeps happening. It happened to her about 6 months ago too, then she had six months of good cakes. She has no idea why. It is a very old Ukrainian recipe, she cooks it all the time. It calls for poppyseeds to soak in milk for half an hours, which is pretty standard.

Any bakers out there with any ideas as to why the poppyseeds are falling? I know that it seems trivial, but if she doesn't have a poppyseed cake for the family, she really will be upset. Help!

I've never made a poppyseed cake, but I've read that if you are dding nuts or fruit to a cake batter, toss the nuts or fruit in a little flour and that is supposed to keep them from falling.

Good luck to your mom. Let us know if she gets a successful cake.

are they fresh? the only thing I can think of is that the poppyseeds are older and therefore some chemical thingy in the whatchamacallit isn't working correctly with the whositwhatsit and it's making the seeds fall?
