well Ziggy is now 13 months(14 in 2 days). since a tiny pup we had him in his crate, always did good, no problem with potty issues. He out grew his crate and so we moved him out of it, and he sleeps in the mud room. to give you an idea, we could fit three large crates in there. so now it his his room he has a big square pillow, blankies his toys and bowl of water. anyhow...he has been doing good with potty time, not had any accidents at all, until recently!! I said good boy because he is soo good, he never is loud he almost never barks. during the day he will come nudge me and do a couple of turns and head for the door when he needs to go out. when he was in his crate, he would do a quick bark, more of a call then straight barking and i would know to go get him. Issue: now at night we put him in his room. we use a gate so he is not locked in there. durign the day if he is in there he doesn't fuss with the gate at all. At night he will simply push the gate and get out and not come looking for me or bark or anything, he goes on stelth mode and goes and messes on the foyer! so how did he go from beign so good, to not letting me know?? I am tired of cleaning up in the middle of the night! OH and by the way when he was in his crate he rarely ever had to go out in the middle of th night! i know he can hold it! i mean he did so good when he was younger! I am puzzled! hoe do I teach him to bark? to call out when he needs to go? I would really not like to close the door on him to lock him in because i'm afraid it will get too hot, or too cold in there. should i bring back the crate? any suggestions? Thanks Andrea |

Maybe its in the name. I have this same problem with my Tiggy. She will hold it all day no worries and either comes to nudge me or rings her door bell and waits patiently at the back door. But at night she won't ring the bell she sneaks off and goes behind the sofa. The only solution I have found that works for us is for me to pen Tiggy at night. I don't have a crate but I put a little bit of X pen around her bed at night so that she has about as much space as a crate just no top. We have not had an accident since I started doing this. I've tried not having it twice and she was fine for one night then pee on the floor the second night. Night before last she had quite a big drink before bed (I was not here to supervise ) But although she was busting and ran straight outside for a big pee there was no mess on the floor. Maybe your mud room is too big and you need a pen or crate or maybe you need to make it so Ziggy can't get out at night. Good luck |
We crated Butchy until he got too big for his crate. He was very slow to understand he had to go outside to pee and even if he indicated if we weren't fast enough he went. We never crated any of our dogs at night and we decided to take a chance on him and left him out with Tripper. Even tho the days were not so great he did wonderfully at night. No messes. Don't know what the difference was between night and day but he's been fine ever since. Only issue we had was when he had an upset stomach he pooped on the kitchen floor but at least that was easy to clean up. |
If he is suddenly doing pee pee in the middle of the night I say it could be a few reasons...First, the area is too large for him. He can still pee in his area and it doesn't bother him. Dogs won't usually pee pee in their crate becaue it is too close for comfort ...Another reason is too much exercise right before bed time and then drinking too much water....Limit exercise right before bed time. Sort of like shutting down the computer and/or tv before bed for humans to sort of "wind down" before actually going to sleep...Another reason...urunary infection? If he is not used to sleeping in that room alone without you, if his crate was with you in your bedroom, he may be having some anxiety at suddenly sleeping alone. Maybe a low playing radio or something to keep him company will help the anxiety? |
I think it's just easy. Dogs will do what's easiest. It's far easier not to wake you and go outside in the cold I think you have to find a way to make sure he can't push open the gate. I have a baby gate that Chiquita can't hop or push open. We gate her in one room of the house as well. If that isn't a possiblilty then yes, I would re-crate him at night. Get the right size crate and start from the beginning again. And do it as soon as possible!!!!! It is far easier to train then to correct. He's already figured out a lazy way to mess in your house. Don't let him do it again.....set him up for success by making sure he stays in his 'den' (room) or crating him at night. If he needs to potty he will DEF let you know....they are smart. Barking is natural. You don't have to train him to alert you. You need to put him in a situation where he is required to alert you to get what he wants:wink: |
Thanks everybody! yeah! he is defenetly taking the easy rout I think!! to go over a few things mentioned...he has never slept upstairs with us, so no anxiety issues there..and as far as peeing at night i havent found pee stains, he goes #2 !! lat night he came up( after getting out of the room!! ) next to my husbands side of the bed to wake him up! when I am the one that takes him out about %95 of the time!! and when i got up to take him out i didn't realize he had pooped by the foyer! again! now one thing....we did just finally finished switching over to adult food, from the puppy formula, would that have anything to do with his bowels? same brand, and gradually weaned him from one to another!! the huge crate would have to be our next investment, because the one we have i think is too small for him, not sure how tall he is but he was 95lbs. last month at a vet check! But we sure have to do something to retrain him i guess. Well happy holidays to all! and thanks!!! Andrea |
Tiggy will poop at night as well. Penning her has sorted the issue. She would also ring her door bell to go out and play after she had pooped. |
Tiggy knows what to do just forgot the order of things. |
