So I got down and really looked and it was on top of his foot, between the 3rd and 4th toes. I cleaned it and put some antiinflammatory, non- itchie cream I had on it, and wrapped it up for the night. Called the vet at 8am, got him in at 1pm. After Troy looked it over, poked at it and started to lance it (it was puffy and shiny and looked like there was something under then skin), we decided this may get more extensive, so we paused and sedated him. Then went on with the dissection... All that was in there was a small blood clot and a lot of angry looking tissue. It's a bacterial and fungal infection. Who knows how he got it? Maybe at the show a few weeks ago? He really hasn't done anything else. Classes are over for the holidays, too icy to do anything outside here. So now he's on both an antibiotic and antifungal, and has a dressing change on the foot with antibiotic ointment 4 times a day. All stocked up with gauze, vetwrap and medical tape (good to be a nurse!), just need to get some more pill pockets to help with 6 pills a day! So, no sledding (even if we didn't have the ice with the snow over) for us. And luckily our next agility trial isn't until January 14th. Poor Chewie, he needs to mend and get better. Our vet office started giving holiday gift boxes of fruit last year for their "best" customers....I got mine again this year! |

Oh poor chewie. I hope his infection clears up quickly. I hope u enjoy the "fruits" of the Vet's labor. How is Simon doing? |
Hope Chewie is ok. Isn't it nice to know your on the list of best customers. |
violet wrote: Oh poor chewie. I hope his infection clears up quickly. I hope u enjoy the "fruits" of the Vet's labor. How is Simon doing? Simon is doing well. The swelling has gone down dramatically and he's being a happy basset most of the time. He is eating his soft food (going to be on it all the time now, as too many teeth are gone) really well. He's finished his antibiotics, so now is just on his heart med. He still acts needy and neurotic at times, and just shivers, but it is happening less and less. I hope he can now gain some weight - 39 is just too thin. 48-50 was his perfect weight, and that was on the lean side. A few of my friends have been over and seen him and are shocked at how much weight he lost when he got sick. Pounds he never needed to lose either. He's getting 2 meals a day, snacks in between, added fats and supplements to boost calories. I hope it starts showing! |
poor chewie hope he feels better soon if he can take the snow send him to me for the winter |
Poor Chewie! I hope he feels better soon. I hate sores on the feet, the always seem to take forever to heal. In and out of the snow, getting the wound wet...I cringe just thinking about it. to him! |
do you have a medical wing set up yet???? POOR Dawn....poor Chewie....poor Simon.. |
Awww poor Chewie! Hugs and rubs from me, licks and sniffs from Mulligan. |
Wow. Even Oscar, the King of Skin Infections has never had a bacterial AND fungal infection together. (I shouldn't say that too loud.........) Sorry to hear about Chewie's owie. I'll beat Jill to the punch.....did you get any pictures of the surgery? Hope he is on the mend quickly. Glad to hear that Simon is doing better. Fatten that boy up! Laurie and Oscar, He Who Has Never Turned Down a Meal |
Hope Chewie is healing up well. I hate things on their feet too. Takes too long to heal and too many bugs down there. |
My trainer who has german Shepard dogs, had this problem recently with her dog. A "digit" got infected and she thinks it may have come from contact with the sheep poop, etc. She does alot of herding training...Her poor dog was limping and it took a while to heal but he is okay now. Hope Chewie heals quickly! |
NO pictures, but I promise to take one tomorrow morning when I change his dressing! He's been good so far. He never even was limping, but now with it all wrapped he does... He can go out in the snow, as it's Vetwrapped and taped up. But no playing at the Paw (too much communal stuff in the play area), no sledding (if we ever get out - too much ice), and thankfully we are on holiday break from agility class. I think for exercise he's just going to get to play out in the yard and race around with Biscuit. That will work him out, racing through the drifts! |
Aw, I just noticed this when you posted on Facebook. Our guys are down. Chewie's sounds a lot more annoying than Owen's though. |
Know those......he was trying to cure his own problem, but.......... Poor guy. Good thing he knows boots and tolerate "things" on his feet. It is always a challenge to keep those feet wrapped when they are determined to undo all our work. Reminds me of Jack.......he's a foot licker but when I investigated I found this strange growth atop a toe. After clipping off the hair I found......another toe. Silly boy has an extra digit atop another. Hope Mr. Chews is ready for the new year's sledding season. |
New picture going into the picture album, it actually looks worse today |
Oh no... I don't know if any of this will help but I had started to post twice the other day but accidentally closed out twice while working and gave up. If I wasn't so long winded, it wouldn't happen. Darby has problems every year with a toe. We go through the ragweed season... she's really reactive and her feet stain due to licking so I put her in poodle-feet. Then it eases with the snow fall, the licking subsides and white hair again starts to come in (I then trim her feet to get rid of the awful staining!). December to January every year she gets a sore on a toe... it's been on both outside back feet toes before. I think they all start out as an injury... running through the bushes or the hard snow/ice. Early on, she required surgery for the removal of histeocytomas... one on her chest early in December 2005 http://oesusa.com/AboutU336.jpg (she's wearing a velour blanket I cut up ). Being a nurse, you know this but if anyone else is reading, these are things that will often spontaneously go away on their own in a few months but her's were real bothersome and I wasn't as experienced enough in the beginning to understand how much damage a dog can do by licking. The second one she required surgery for was on her toe- January 2007 http://oesusa.com/DarbysFoot.jpg http://oesusa.com/EmDarb12007.jpg http://oesusa.com/12507Yes.jpg By the time the third one came about in Dec/Jan 2007-8, I was desperate so I had started reading anything I could get my hands on. http://oesusa.com/DarbysToe.jpg http://oesusa.com/DarbysToe11207.jpg I had read about Neo-Predef Powder on a vet website. http://www.vetinfo.com/dhotspots.html http://www.pfizerah.com/Product_Overvie ... species=cn Jump ahead to this week... We took her in on Wednesday for doc to take a look at a small black spot on the toe she had surgery on back in 2007 . I photograph stuff so I can keep track of it and compare it... I can't rely on memory alone when comparing things. I was getting ready to give Darby a bath early so I thought I'd photograph it. I later photographed it during daylight for a better pic. We took her in and just above the black spot, doc found what looked like a blood blister... but it was bright red and raised and had NOT been there earlier!!! She said it looked like an interdigital cyst (I'm thinking, sheesh! Dawn had just posted about Chewie's interdigital boo-boo. ) Got instructions from the vet and when I got home, shaved it down, washed it with an antibacterial soap and applied Panalog. By the time we got home, it looked more like a hot spot.... it was no longer red and raised. http://oesusa.com/DarbysRightToe-121510.jpg They ALL started out like this and I would usually only catch them after the licking started. So I washed it twice that day, Panaloged her twice and the next morning it had spread to the other side of the toe. I called and asked if it would be ok to use the Neo-Predef Powder I keep on hand. Doc wasn't going to give her an oral antibiotic due to local cases of MRSA which I totally understand... and her's wasn't bad enough to warrant it. I've been using it and so far anyway, it looks like it's getting better. I keep a sock on it and put a Muttluck on her before she goes outside. I was thankful that doc was so observant... it hadn't gotten to the point where Darby had even started licking it. They can progress so rapidly to something really icky. Anyway, I don't know if Neo-Predef would be appropriate with the fungal component and Chewie's might be a deeper infection. Just thought I'd share it. I really hope he'll heal up soon. |
It seems somewhat similar - although this is in the web space between the toes. Where it should be flat skin, it feels like a chunky mass. The ointment I was instructed to use is neomycin - and that's in the powder. So, it must give a similar action antibiotic-wise. I'll have to ask about that, as I need to call in tomorrow and give them an update - thanks Jaci (and I posted a new picture in the pictures section too) |
mmmm... ouchie. It doesn't look oozy though. |
First off, Jaci, your pictures are always amazing . I find them so helpful! Secondly, poor Chewie! The last picture doesn't look so good. Hope he's feeling better today! |
That crazy dog lady with the camera. Hoping Chewie's foot is looking better today! |
I'm on an evening dressing change schedule, so I haven't done it for today. But, the nausea/vomiting risk of his antifungal finally reared it's ugly head. He has looked nauseous for days, this morning he laid next to me under the table and puked up bile...all over his legs and the cream wool rug. This is the 1st time he EVER has puked in his life. But it was drug induced, so I don't know if that really counts. They told me when we started it that he most likely would get sick from it - he lasted longer than most. So, we are holding the med for 36-48 hrs, then resuming. He ate his breakfast and kept it down. So hope we can resume after a short break. (Doing an antiemetic was the other option, but I thought it would be best to rest his gut instead.) |
Poor Chewie. I hope he gets better quick so he can stop the meds. |
Poor guy. Praying Chewie gets better soon. At least he is in great hands with you Dawn. |
Poor buddy. I feel so bad for them when they don't feel well. Is it Ketoconazole that upset his stomach? Quote: At least he is in great hands with you Dawn. Exactly. |

Quote: At least he is in great hands with you Dawn. Exactly. Thanks guys. Like most of us here, my pups are part of my family While I never would wish them sick or injured, I am glad I have medical knowledge to apply to getting them better when something does happen. |
Update: Drugs are all done (as of Friday). He feels much better. The last couple days I've had the dressing off. With all this snow I was more worried about trapping moisture in it and getting another infection growing! He's been mostly good and leaving it alone. Today's the test...I'm at work.... |
Glad to hear he's feeling better! Chewie, if you're reading this, be a good boy while your mama's working! |
Gah, just saw this thread today. I hope that he is getting better! |
So happy to hear Chewie is feeling better! |
