Haircut :(

I think I have to cut Hank's hair tonight. He's just so matted from the combination of puppy hair(he just turned one), constant rain and his skin issues.

I brush him, but I'm still constantly cutting out matts, and now he's patchy.
I just really love his hair when it flops while he runs, and hes sooo cute shaggy. I'm so sad to cut it. It took so long to grow it out- it's about 5-6 inches now.

I'm hoping he will grow out of this and have regular hair but I'm not sure- he doesn't have a traditional OES coat. It's more like a beardie, but with an soft fluff layer.

Sorry to complain, I'm just sad and I don't see another option- I want him to be comfortable.

Oh I feel for you Molly. I too am struggling with Howie's coat. Most of it is fine, but the underbelly and his beard are a little matted.

Can anyone recomment a conditioner or something that can be put in the mats to help comb through?
I think of J&J "No More Tangles for kids". You know where you spray and it helps work the comb through the child's hair. Maybe I am dreaming of an easier solution rather than shaving our pups.

suggestions??

Cowboy Magic is awesome for working mats out. You can find it at a feed mill or horse/tack shop.
MO's hair has always been soft, don't think there's a coarse hair on here, except her lashes. Really needs to be well groomed or kept shorter. Never stands proud like those show coats
Well, here he is... freshly shorn. I had to go shorted than I wanted- there were some really terrible mats on his legs and chest!

As it grows out you can even it up a bit. The bath and blow dry probably felt great after the mats. Start back with "brushing" immediately, soft brush for awhile just to get him used to the brush and being pampered. Remember you can keep the undercarriage clipped or even shaved to reduce the mats due to friction.
Hank looks great, nice and clean. I bet he feels good too. I love when dogs are clipped not by professionals, I always think they look like cuddly stuffy toys...gotta get a gund.

Thanks Amber for the suggestion of Cowboy Magic, I am going to a tack shop this Friday to pick some up.

Hanks still looks adorable!

Comfort has to come 1st. You guys are so wet out there, it has to be a never ending battle to dry out the coat.

You might want to shorten his beard a bit to match the rest (unless you like it :D ) and get the benefit of a less wet face for a while until it grows with the rest of him.

You may be sad, but I bet he will be his usual happy self! ...and do you get to go do any herding?? It would be a good time!

I'm leaving it through the weekend- the sheepdog club here has a walkabout through the xmas light blocks, and Hank is going to dress as santa in a coat and hat- so I thought he should have his beard. I'm not sure after that, I may cut it, but its pretty cute. I do trim his mustache, so thats all short and clean...

We did do a herding test this fall- Hank got a score of Excellent! and would be encouraged to continue training. Its quite far from me though- and all the rainy=muddy-poo-ey Hank. We might look again in spring- or maybe do agility instead- he loved the ramps and jumps when we were in the ring...

I remembered he did well at the herding test - but yes, agility is a LOT cleaner!
