I think Dawn posted that she is stranded at work because of the weather on Simon's update in the Medical section. I know she's in Minnesota, not sure if she's near Minneapolis. Good luck to your hubby! Laurie and Oscar |
The Metrodome inflated roof collapsed from the weight of the snow. |
I'm about 1.5 hours south of the airport. Our snow event is all done - in fact it is gorgeous sunny out. Although cold, it's the perfect winter scenes like on a Christmas card. I would imagine by tomorrow the snow removal will be pretty much history. I know around here every plow, snow blower and shovel is getting a workout! |
Quote: The Metrodome inflated roof collapsed from the weight of the snow. Yeah Fox Sports has been showing the breach.......first a little bit of snow/melt coming thru in several places, pretty white columns. Then the inflated roof gradually sagged, finally a breach of one of the panels and all the stuff came pouring down about 30 or 40 yard line. It was pretty...and dramatic. All happened about 5 a.m. caught on security cameras. |

I talked to Nance last night about 11 pm and they were out blowing the snow paths for the dogs! Brrrr...... Thank heavens they cancelled the Vikings game for today |
Just saw the collapse of the Metrodome roof. Pretty cool. The officials at our football stadium (Carrier Dome) offered their expertise and fabric to the Metrodome officials. Apparently, our dome and the Metrodome are very similar in design and were built just a year & a half apart. |
I'm in SE Minnesota--work about an hour S. of Minneapolis in Rochester, MN. I was stranded at work last night in my building and am spending tonight in a motel after having freed my car (24 inches, plus a lot of blowing, meaning huge drifts). It's 52 miles from work to home across open fields/prairies and the roads are pretty uncertain. Internet and phone witness accts made it seem like a risky deal to try to go that direction. Then A coworker told me that she had headed into our town to do some shopping since the snow was gone but turned around as the interstate was blowing/drifting and she didn't want to risk it. My other route is down to 1 lane for about 10 miles because of snow so that's why I am staying put for tonight. However, I believe the worst of the snow part is done. Bitter, bitter cold now--below zero plus significant wind chill. I don't know how flights are doing now, but I think last night many, if not all were cancelled or delayed. Don't know how that would affect today's or tomorrow's travel but anyone coming to MN/WI should be prepared for bitter cold and perhaps snow and weather delays. |
Thanks everyone. He will be calling his co-workers in Minneapolis later tonight. I looked on the weather channel and they said it was bitterly cold...He is packed for that as he travels to Minn often throughout the year and knows what the winters bring...We are having torential rain. 50 mph wind with rain. Street is flooded out from the Bay water... Makes it diffuclt to walk the dogs The winter is NOT an easy time with dogs! So, if my hubby gets straned there tomorrow, maybe he can stay over with one of you! Ha ha... |
If he's staying in the Twin Cities, he should be fine. The blowing and drifting is really only an issue when you get out in the open areas. People in towns just don't understand that I can live just 10 miles away from town and be stranded at home! And yes, it's now on the cold side of the storm. We are at -6 right now and dropping. Many schools are already 2 hrs late because it will be dangerously cold by morning with dangerous wind chills. Who wants to be responsible for kids on a bus in the middle of no where if they break down? Also, the non-hiway roads are still really icy, as we got lots of freezing rain before the snow. And too cold for salt to work. I finally got home about an hour ago from when I went to work Saturday morning, and while it was icy, driving was really pretty decent. |
