I'm such a Luddite sometimes. |

You can buy software, but I don't know how the annual updates work. I've used online filing for years now with total confidence and great results, and maybe $10-20 to file. Turbo Tax, Tax Act, Tax Slayer, HR Block - and more I'm sure. All good programs to file online. |
Couldn't you just have someone do your taxes for you for under $50? You're a single person so it should be pretty cheap. Or do you have complicated stuff that makes it more expensive? |
I use turbo tax. I figure if our treasury secretary can use it and avoid paying his taxes, that's good enough for me. I figure if our treasury secretary can use it and avoid paying his taxes, it MUST be good. I couldn't decide which punchline... |

My friend pays about $85 to get her taxes done and hers are even less complicated than mine! I think $85 is out of line. I'll probably break down and buy Turbo Tax. It's under $50. But I don't have a printer at home. Do I need to print copies for my records? |
You can do turbo tax online (without going through the hassle of buying software that then needs to be updated online anyway with the most current tax info), and they will store your return in .pdf format in their "vault" for free (I believe). You can download that .pdf and save it yourself, too. It's always a good idea to print out a copy for yourself. Be aware they charge extra to do the state return (if necessary for you). They efile the stuff as part of the fee. There are many discounts available, do your research. One such available is if you have an account with Vangard, for instance. I'm sure there are others. |

I haven't looked yet, but the discounts usually start after the 1st. You have to log into your Vanguard account and then click a special link to get to the intuit (turbo tax) site EACH TIME in order to receive the discount. At least that's the way it has worked in the past. There may be better discounts out there! |
