I picked up Squeak and said my goodbyes and Gilligan who was in the same room came over and licked the top of Squeaks head - he wanted to say goodbye too. Stevie was squeaking loudly and raced around his pen and so I placed Squeak back in order for him to say goodbye. Squeak by now was wrapped in a fluffy towel and was placed in the pen. Stevie laid down next to his friend and started nuding him while squeaking. Squeak took his last breath and Stevie stopped squeaking and went to the opposite corner as if he appeared to be mourning. It was so sad. The next day I was determined to find another friend for Stevie as while I was grieving for Squeak I knew he had lived a long and happy life but it was Stevie who I was worried for. After all, this little guy was saved by Small Animal Rescue, seen by a vet who assurred us that he could live a happy life and felt no pain...he just wiggles a lot and with the help of friends deals with his blindness. I drove aprox 50 miles to adopt a guinea pig from a shelter as ironically none of my local ones had any and now Stevie was alone for the first time in his life. I got lucky and adopted Chico. Chico was a severely abused guinea pig who was brought back to health by a SPCA constable who seized him in a cruelty seizure. Chico continued to need good food, and a happy life. He'd be the perfect friend for Stevie. I brought Chico in the house and Gilligan immediately raced over and licked his head. The three of them share the family room and I have no worries that the piggies will always be safe and sound with their big friend protecting them. Gilligan loves guinea pigs! Marianne |

So sorry to hear that Squeak crossed the bridge. My brother and sister and I each had a guinea pig when we were kids they are such communal creatures. I'm amazed that they aren't frightened off Gilligan, he is obviously a VERY special boy. |
I'm so sorry to hear about Squeak. G. pigs are special little creatures. I hope Chico and Stevie become best buds. |
I am sorry to hear about Squeak. What a wonderful life he lived! What a love Gilligan is...he must get it from his mommy! |
It is wonderful to see how much you care about and for all the animals in your life. So sad when they pass on but now another little fella will have a wonderful life and Stevie will have someone to bond with and rely on. Gilligan is such a good boy and knows that he was rescued too so I'm sure he can relate. |
So sorry about your G-pig. Its hard to lose someone you love. Just wondering...can you just place a g-pig in with another without them knowing each other and they become friends? |
Guinea pigs are so sweet. Poor Stevie - is he adjusting to his loss? I hope he and Chico can bond. Gilligan is a sweet boy for sure! Do your other dogs like them as well? Chewie just is in love with Princess, my granddaughter's Guinea Pig. He stands by her cage, they sniff and kiss through the cage. If she is out they snuggle and she nuzzles into his hair. |
I love little G-pigs.. Both of my son's had piggies. Our sheepie boy would give them a lick with a tongue bigger than their head. My youngest worried greatly in the beginning as he thought Malcolm was tasting the pigs. Godspeed little squeaker. |
I'm sorry to hear about Squeak!! No surprise an animal in your home lives such a long [happy] life!! Glad Stevie found a friend quickly! |
Squeak was a good age. Still sad though. My last piggie was called squeak. My current totally cute utterly spoilt piggie is called Gilbert or Bertie to his friends. |
I'm sorry for your loss of Squeak. How sad for you and for Stevie. I'm glad you found another friend for Gilligan (and Stevie)! |
I hope Stevie and Chico bond quickly.......Gilligan is there to oversee all. Good bye Squeak I'll miss reading your stories. |
My sympathies on your loss of Squeak. Adorable name for an obviously adored Guinea Pig! |
So sorry for your loss. Glad Stevie has a new friend --sending a special hug for sweet Gilligan. |
Thanks everyone for the condolences regarding Squeak. I was very touched by all the responses. Stevie and Chico are working on bonding. For OES Mommy that asked - bonding male guinea pigs is actually very easy. The trick is to place them first on neutral territory first - for the meet and greet and giving them much loved craisins is a bonus as they go crazy over these! (dried Cranberries) The are so busy eating that they find themselves in close proximity and become used to one another. Then once they've tolerated one another is the return back to the pen. Kinda like bonding dogs in many ways. Male guinea pigs are easy to bond as long as their are no females in close proximity or else they'd fight. Of course the dominant one will try to hump the other one...cough cough such as Stevie did with Chico. Chico moved away and once Stevie established he was alpha to very docile Chico - all is good between them. Gilligan continues to thrive and is doing well. He's a big sweetheart and even the cats have grown accustomed to this big stranger...but it's the guinea pigs that he loves best. |
aww I have a soft spot for guinea pigs- so sorry for your loss. Growing up, my brother and I would build wooden houses for our guinea pigs and place them all over the backyard - so whenever the piggies run from house to house, Sherlock, the family english cocker would follow and make sure they're protected from us humans Sounds like Gilly has an important job! |
