Your First Car

Reading the post about the mini van made me think...wha was your very first car? I see people posting about Chargers, etc...what was your first car?

Mine was a 1975 VW Bug convertible bug, four speed, yello...Drive it until the floor rusted out! Loved that car! But then again, I was a "flower child" as a youngster!

I would have loved a VW bug!!

Chrysler Lebaron
1974 SAAB 99. My father's idea.

Great little snow car. Got me through my first year of college before the the transmission bit the dust. Loved that little tank. Haven't had a SAAB since, though. All Volvos (my Dad's idea) till my Dad decided I needed a van. Sense a trend? ;-)

Kristine
A toyota Celica 1600 sports coupe, I loved it back in ............ not saying the year as I am only 21++++++ :P

Even had a "Playboy Bunny Decal" on the back window   A real single chicks car

Augh, that's what I wanted, but Dad couldn't find one that didn't have the floor rusted out of it! :lmt: I have one now though!
My first car is actually younger than Mady :D I survived 37 years without a car (not that I didn't like cars, I love cars, but...). But Mady had different view on things. SHE needed a car of course! And surprise surprise, she ended up having a need for speed! 8O So we bought her a Subaru Impreza WRX. She loves the turbo. I like how practical the hatchback is 8)

My FIL restored a 1972 yellow 4sp VW recently. He had to replace the floor first thing!!! My husband drove a beetle thru college and loves them yet. A 1966 Mustang was my first car. Loved it so much.

For the record, I got completely bamboozled by David on this purchase. He went on and on and on about safety ratings and gas mileage. I had no idea that we had purchased a fast car until all the men in the neighbourhood asked me what David did to convince me to 'let' him get that car. Now ask me how many times I have driven it. Go ahead, ask me! Once!! I stalled the #$^@$#^@ thing five times backing out of the driveway and never drove it again. Even when we had to go to Emergency when David had a heart attack. We took a CAB because I couldn't drive the #$@$#%@#$ car. Oooooh it makes me so mad to even thing about it. I am making car payments on a car I cannot drive. But at least Mady likes the car.

P.S. Anyone volunteering to teach me how to drive a standard?
My first car was a '73 Pontiac Grand Prix.
400 cubic inch V-8, 4 BBL carb, RWD, limited slip differential.
4,500 lbs of Dee-troit iron!! [Tim Taylor grunt] OH OH OH [/Tim Taylor grunt]

I completely rebuilt that car system by system as my budget allowed.
The only thing I didn't do was the body. Couldn't find parts for it and it was way too cost prohibitive for a high school/college kid.

I used to drag race it at the local strip (and on the street-shhhhh) and show it at local car shows. That car would boil the rear hides for a city block, leaving 2 black stripes the whole way!

I had that car from 1988 to 2001, when I sold it to make room for my new 2002 Trans Am Collector Edition.

I loved that car and occasionally look for another one, albeit perfect, unmolested examples. Hard to find a clean, low mileage example.
I can see me getting another one someday.
Mine (as mentioned before) was the big old boat of a Chevy wagon I got in college. I don't even know what year it was from....it was 1981 and old then, so ???? Oh, and it was brown....  BUT - it sure had power!!!

I was just starting to date Todd after I graduated and he replaced the brakes for me!! I was entranced immediately, as my dad was very unmechanical (I even changed the oil on our car and truck at home). I never knew anyone mechanical (he was a mechanic at the time). We still joke that that's what convinced me to marry him..or was it the fact he outcooked me??

And, we also had a VW bug.  It was a glittery navy blue with a baja kit. So super fun to drive!! We finally had to sell it to some young punk after we realized it was grossly unpractical with twins. :( :( and the floorboards were all rusted out.....but everything rusts out in MN with all the road salting in winter.
My first car was a 1973 MG Midget in British racing green. I got the car for $1300.00 in 1977. I loved that car but it had some problems. I used to take my 1st OES Percy everywhere in it. My parents sold it while I was in the UK. I never did get a photo.
My first was a 1986 Chev Blazer. It was peach when I bought it (not even kidding), but I could see the potential in it and it had been babied by the original owner. It was fully loaded, and I felt like a queen in that thing. I had it for about 8 months before I hit a deer driving to the summer camp I worked at. The whole front end needed new body work, so I bit the bullet and got the whole thing repainted midnight navy blue with a pearl clear coat. It was beautiful. I would gaze at the color as I opened the door each time I drove it.

I was the only one in my group of friends in high school that had a truck, plus it was a 4x4, so we drove that thing all over the place! I drove in so many fields, parks, lawns, tobogganing hills, etc with that thing I can't even remember them all. It was so gutless because of a stiff accelerator cable, but the power was there, just slow to access it. And if you turned a corner too fast on an almost empty tank, it would stall. It had a mysterious hole in the gas tank that would only leak if you filled it above half, so I could never fill the tank all the way. Pretty annoying with a gas guzzler. We never could find that hole. My brother and I changed the oil in it ourselves, and between him, my dad and myself, we did all the work on it for it's life with me. Gotta love those carbureted engines that make sense!

I grew up in a suburb, so I finally sold it 4 years later after getting a job in the big city, and the poor mileage caught up with me. I liked the pep of a newer car, but really missed the SUV. I've always wanted another SUV, but have just never gotten there. Maybe after the minivan ;)

Sure no probs. Just fly me over. I'll even come without Tiggy as I can get a sheepie fix with Mady. I drive a 6 on the floor Mazda MX5 sports convertible, red 'cause red cars go faster. It's my 3rd MX, I think I'm addicted. I have to borrow Wayne's SUV to take Tiggy to our various trainings. :D
My first car was an '84 Dodge Omni, which I grew to love. It was a great size, great on gas super reliable and just an all around comfortable car to drive. I mean, it started out as a joke but then I wouldn't hear a word negative about my Omnis-- because I went on to have about 6 more in the next 10 years. Turns out they were also awesome pizza delivery cars. So I bought one cool car to drive and kept an omni for the dirty jobs. It wasn't until about 6 years ago that I finally let my last one go- but I'm still always on the lookout for another one. There was Shelby GLHS version with a turbo and everything and I'd love to get a hold of one of those!
My first car was a brand new 1972 Chevy Nova..Red...I loved that car.
Work your feet in opposite directions, keep the RPMs up and be easy and slow on the clutch pedal.

Don't try to learn in your driveway, head in over to the mall. And for Pete's sake, find a friend to take you, not your hubby!!!

My first was a 1967 Fiat Spider, it looked just like this one
http://www.squidoo.com/1969-fiat-spider
Except mine was brown and didn't run. :-D
My first car was a 1972 Chevy Vega Hatchback, 3-speed stick, bright green :cyclops:

Great car and perfect for hauling my first OES, Buford. :hearts:
Besides having the charger our other favorite car (Carl's fav) was a 72 Olds Cutlass 4 speed. The friends of my boys thought it was great that their mom could drive the stick. Felt quite powerful.
the first car I drove was my dads 1983 Subaru Outback, I was in high school. The first car I bought myself, was a 1989 Mazda Pick-up. Ive always loved trucks. Yes am I Texas girl!!!
My first was a 1959 Ford Galaxy 500 I got back in 1966. AM radio, Automatic trans and RED seats! Mrs. Bailee still has the KEY from it. Lots of memories and lots of miles. A long way back from our 2010 ES-350.

A bronze 77 Ford Pinto (same model as in the movie Cujo). Looked just like this...I drove it from 87 to 91, when I bought my first new car, a 1991 Ford Probe, which I still drive 19+ years later.
In high school I wanted a vintage Landcruiser or a Jeep FJ (the postal truck) but my father insisted it was unsafe and decided to surprise me with the best and worst SUV ever- a black Isuzu Trooper with the license plate that reads "sxy yoda" - I named it Bailey (after Toby Bailey - the UCLA basketball player - I had a huge crush on him (and yoda))

http://picasaweb.google.com/slaplore/Po ... 1055329090

Had so many memories with that car throughout university in Rochester - multiple road trips from CA to NY with friends, first boyfriend, first kiss, first breakup and etc. Students on campus knew my car before knowing me - they'd always say "you're that girl with the sxy yoda jeep?" :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

Bailey wasnt a reliable SUV - got me stuck in many snow banks (and no it wasnt how I drove!), several accidents, expensive mechanical problems and eventually it got caught on fire from a leaky transmission - but I loved that SUV!!!!!

Love the plate!!! :excited:
The first car that I owned outright (drove mom and dad's up til then) was my college graduation present from my parents. A 1979 Ford Fairmont Futura. Brown with pumpkin colored pleather interior. No cigarette lighter--that was an option. But there was an ashtray! I used to call it The Smart Brown Ford Futura. Somewhere I have a picture of it buried in snow, and I'm standing on top of it.
Who needs to know learn to drive the stick shift? C'Mom down to Long Island and I will teach you. Its easy...just don't go up any hills that have a stop light at the top
1969 Javlin-- white with a red stripe. I loved that car. I also drove Mom and Dad's Bronze 1968 Impala. I really like it, because we could fit more people in it. At least 5 in the back, and 3 in the front. 4 if we were all skinny enough. Nothing like cruising to the Eagles "Take it easy" on 8 track on a Saturday night. S A T U R D A Y NIGHT. S A T U R D A Y NIGHT.

AND.. WHO CAN FORGET MY FAVORITE-- "Take it to the limit"! Good times... Good times...

If you work the clutch and gas just right, forget the brake, that stoplight is nooo problem. Its been a while since I drove a stick but I "used" to love it.
Our very first car as a married couple was a used Datsun station wagon. We needed something cheap and that fit the bill. For its time, I think it was pretty fuel efficient. We had it for about 7 years before it died. I can't remember the year now--maybe a '74?. It was a very bright blue.

My very first car of my own was/still is a 2005 Camry, which I love. It is the only car we've ever purchased new and then, only because they were running specials with almost 0% financing. It's got about 160,000 miles on it......

We tend to drive our vehicles into the ground, using them all the way up. The datsun was replaced by an Aries K car--used, for whom we finally obtained a sibling: a used minivan an 89 Plymouth voyager-- and mostly let our oldest son drive the Aries until it finally died for good. We didn't replace the Voyager until about 2006. That was a used Dodge Caravan which my hubby drove and loved but lost it when a very bad ice storm sent him down an embankment. That was replaced by another Dodge Caravan, with the stow and go seats, which my husband loves, loves, loves. For me, personally, I don't like how the dash/controls on Dodge vehicles is set up. This works out well: he doesn't like my little car, so we each drive our own.

There have been a couple of briefly owned, on their way to the junkyard temporary vehicles, which I hope I have broken my husband of the habit of getting.
:D :D :D My first car was a 1950's Morris Miinor convertible that I bought from friends of my then husband's in 1964 or thereabouts! 8) It was of course standard shift and it smelled strongly of pipe tobacco. The previous owner was a Brit scientist who smoked a pipe. It was sold when my ex decided to go back to university but I wish that I had kept it.:( The brakes were not great and it was very drafty in a Quebec winter!
Did somebody say they listend to music on their "8 track"! Ha ha...Now THAT really shows your age!   I remember the 8 track well and geez, were those big or what!
mine was a 76 toyota corolla primer colored. cost $150 and i had to make payments lol. but at 17 with a 2yr old at least we had a car. one the same age as me could have been much worse. sarah was good to me
The first car that was sort of mine was my parents old 1986 Ford Van. That thing was awesome. It was called the Blue Whale or the Love Van of Joy. I could fit SO many people in there in high school. I also drove carpool lol! It also had the back that converted to a bed! Great place to have the dog sit :) I loved that car. Everyone knew it. Then I went off to college and my younger brother crashed and killed it :( So sad.

'My' first car that I bought was a 2000 toyota 4runner. still driving it with 120,000 miles on it. I'm hoping to get a new car in the next 2 years or so!
My first car was a 1972 Chevy Vega-white with a black stripe--it was a stick and backfired like crazy. They could never figure out why and could never fix it. Loved it though because it was mine! :D :D :D

Yes that was quite a sales job wasn't it!!! 8O

When Kim told me that she and David had bought Mady a Subaru WRX I was left rather incredulous and couldn't help but question who the Subie was for. I think my reaction might have been classified as just a tad cynical or possibly even verging on good natured sarcasm. Dang, wish I could be that pursuasive to Michele next time I'm lusting after what she calls one of my "drool cars".  :sidestep:

Thanks and Cheers

Mine was a then 19 year old 1967 Rover TC2000. Quite quintessential elegant little English car.

Funny Susie my ex-and I had a choice between a '70 Barracuda or a Road Runner, bought the Barracuda. My brother's first car was a brand spanking new '69 Camero. He now has a '72 Vette.
What a fun post!

I won't even mention the car I purchased when I was 16 as it only ran three days before it died in the middle of an intersection and I never had a chance to drive it myself. I bought it so my b/f was going to teach me how to drive . My mom was a single parent and didn't drive.

3 years later...

I then got an ugly green Pinto...called it my Mean Grean Machine. The front bumper was held with a twisted coathanger and it would make an awful racket when I drove down the street. At the time I was a criminology student and was doing research for the Police Dept and so was allowed to park in their underground parking lot beneath the station. People always thought It was an undercover car. LOL.

After years and years of driving ole beaters I finally purchased a 3 year old vehicle two years ago!!!!!! It starts first thing in the morning! It runs great!!! It doesn't make weird noises!!! I never take it for granted ...I waited too long for the newest car I've ever owned!!! Whoooo hooooo!
My first car was a 1969 VW bug, white, my father got it for me when I get into collage, it had a big green turtle decal in the back windshil :D :D Fun Car
