Hello, and welcome from WV. Congratulations on your new bundle of fur! When are you getting him or her, have you chosen a name? Please post pics of your new baby, we do love them. You will receive such great advice from everyone here. Until then, use the search button at the top of main page to look up threads with loads of info for a new parent!! My advice would be to use the same food the breeder has used and transition carefully to a premium puppy food, as stomach upset(vomiting and diarrhea ) is fairly common. Do research kennel use in puppies, invaluable IMHO. Establish a routine for your puppy, play, rest, meals, potty, etc. Its helpful and less stressful for everyone. Above all, make an appointment with an established and experienced vet and have your puppy checked out as soon as possible. Again, welcome to our furry corner! |
Welcome and congrats! Well I just got my first sheepie (shes 8 1/2 weeks) but i've had my fair share of puppies (Hounds, Mutts, Wolf hybrids, Huskies, Rotties (atm I have a 8 1/2 week old sheepie, 5yr old hound and a 10mo old low content wolf hybrid)). My sheepie is the easiest puppy i've had so far but it all depends on personality of your pup too. Make a vet appt. for your pup as soon as you get him/her to make sure he/she is healthy. Take a week off of work (if you can) to get into a routine and bond with your new pup. The only thing all my pups that I have, had in common is they need lots and lots of consistency. Training must start right away. I train about 4-5 times a day with my pup about 5-15 mins, depending on how into it she is. It has to stay fun! If it's not fun your pup will not want to do it. Schedules/routines are key. I never feed 2-3 hrs before bed and take water away about the same time too. Usually a little after (I leave water down during the day but that may not work for you. You may find that a water schedule works for you too.) You have to find that perfect routine that works for you and your life. I do not crate because there is always someone home and everywhere I go, I can take my dogs (even to work) but you may not be so lucky. Crate training maybe a good option for you. They do need a safe place you can put them when you cannot watch them. I feed my dogs Diamond Naturals. It's fairly inexpensive, as far as good foods go. No grains, soy, corn or bad attitives like that. You can get it at any local feed stores. I have found out that I have to brush my sheepie pup once a day already. With a rake then I go through her fur, then with a regular people comb. It works for now. Ive found if i skip a day, it just makes the grooming sessions longer and tougher to do. Grooming her once a day makes it shorter, easier for her to tolerate and much more enjoyable for her. Shes much softer after she has been brushed too. Im new too and everyone on here is so nice and so quick to answer your q's. (They also have adorable sheepies! Careful, they will make you want more. lol) Most importantly enjoy your new fur baby! |
Welcome from St. Louis!!!!! There are many many threads here about getting a new puppy~~~ When I first came to this site, I spent hours going through all the topics~~ We all love pictures of sheepiepuppies, so don't forget to post alot of them!!! |
Congratulations...how exciting a new pup! In all the puppy books I read, nothing was mentioned about the amount of sleep a pup needs. It was the advice of our members that help me through a rough pup patch. My pup needed more sleep then I was giving him. Once I realized this, life was much better for everyone in my home. I suggest you get lots of sleep prior to pup arriving. We want pictures!!! peg & pup howie |
Welcome! We're right over the bridge in NJ, so if you ever have any questions, please let me know. I can give you some grooming tips too if you need some help. |

You should definitely take her up on this! I used to live in Philly and I miss seeing Deb (Verveup), Frank, and Rebecca (and Chris and Mandy too). Getting professional grooming assistance is invaluable as are the friendships formed over sheepdogs. . . Is Max your name or your puppy's? |

I agree, take people up on their kind offers to show you how to groom. It it much easier to learn by watching someone work on a real dog than by just looking at photos. The dogs in the photos never squirm! |
Thanks everyone! I just went and bought her all the brushes she'll need, and a big red rubber ball. Picking her up on Saturday! (Her name is Sprocket). |
great name!! Welcome from Texas!!! Ryleigh is my 2nd sheepie but they were 14 years apart so its like learning all over again. I feed her the Blue Buffalo large breed puppy food. She seems to like it just fine and she is strong and healthy too. I brush her every night. I find doing it at night when she is tired is easier because she just lays there and lets me do whatever I want to her. But you will need to brush every night other wise it will take longer the next time. Also I learn on here to keep the "poop shoot" trimmed down so you dont have potty sticking to the hair. I trim the hair on her butt once a week to keep it short and clean. Good luck with the new baby. |
Congrats and welcome! I am also in Philly -- maybe some day we can get a play date. |
Ooo, just noticed today's the big day. Welcome to Sprocket. I hope we have pictures here soon. |
Meet Sprocket. |
Hello, this forum doesn't work well in displaying images from outside sources, maybe you can try uploading the photos to the OES photo gallery here. All the picture FAQS are found here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1119 |
