I guess, with all the hair clumped together, the sores seemed so much bigger than they actually were!!!! We took him to be shaved. I had given him one of the relaxing pills about 1/2 hour before(he did not lick or bite his skin after the pill)...he did very well while he was getting shaved down. As the groomer ran the clippers over the scabs, MOST of them just clumped, with his skin looking almost healed. There was one or two spots that weeped, but after getting a bath, I sprayed all the sores with Dermacool HC. Here are a couple of pics::::: As you can see, they are mostly along his spine. He does have a few very small ones on both sides~~ Any thoughts????? Thanks for all your advice!!!!! |

I was going to mention it looked odd that they were all along the spine. maybe it is some sort of contact allergy or is the hair denser along that area and locking in the offending thing. Funny that there aren't any along the stomach or arms like the other "skin issue" puppers out there. |
EXACTLY, Gail!!! Again, he has about 2 very tiny ones on his sides, but he never was itching them...I can't figure this out. IF it was an allergy, wouldn't it be ALL over his body???? |
if the hair is denser there is it possible that it is a hot spot with a secondary infection??? did they do scrapings and cultures of the areas??? is there anything that he could be rubbing his back against????? there are some skin conditions that have a "classical" distribution pattern at a dermatologist may look at the pattern and skin lesions and say" of course that is an aunt minnie for......." I know psoriasis has a classic pattern and if this is some weird inflammation or auto immune skin thing your regular vet may be at a loss. Did you get an appointment with a dermatologist???? |
Do you use a topical like Frontline or Revolution, etc? Looks like it could be in that sort of pattern - maybe a chemical burn from it? The location and pattern look like it's from something external - and quite specific. |
Just got off the phone with a skin specialist. Have an app. for the 18th...soonest we could get in. There is only one specialist in the St. Louis area.. .. I am sure Coz will be all healed by then, but I am going to take the pictures of him to show the vet what it looked like. Hopefully, he has some ideas of how to prevent this from happening again. |
ok...I am a very bad mom!!!! Since he does not go out except to pee, I do not have him on anything. So it can't be anything like that....And yes, I think the pattern looks too specific for an allergy too, although I am not an expert... As far as I chemical burn ~~~I would be clueless to think of what it could be. I DO know it is NOT contagious or the girls would have gotten it by now. I DO know that when this begins, he seems to get a serious ear infection along with it. Our vet has ruled out any type of mite...and again, our vet is baffled. |
I don't think you are a bad....or if you are, it makes me bad too. I ever so rarely use any chemicals on my dogs. I've never used Frontline. Knock on wood, it hasn't ever come to haunt me. Interesting link that he has ear infections at the same time. Can you tell which comes 1st? |
yes!!! The ear seems to start...we begin using ear meds, but it gets so bad he walks around with his head tilted. Always his left ear. By the time we take him to the vet, his skin and his ear...He gets a shot, meds for his sores and more ear meds. |
Whenever Oscar has a bacterial skin infection brewing, it is common to find the lesions along the spine, as well as on his belly. Has the vet ever cultured the area to see if it is bacterial or fungal? It could also be pyoderma related to allergies, which is what our first sheepdog had. The skin specialist should be able to help. It's too bad you have to wait so long to get in. I hope Coz is comfortable until then. Laurie and Oscar |
Poor Coz. Did the bath and medicine seem to help the itching? |
^^^ Judi, I think the shaving helped the most. The bath seemed to soothe him and the sores. He did so well on the "relaxing" meds before the shave at about 5:00. ( the directions were 'as needed'. So, at about midnight, I gave him another pill thinking it would help him sleep..and not begin to itch. About 20 minutes later, I was watching TV and Coz began to pace....Pearl got up to see what he was doing and he tried to mount her!!!! Well, we all know how Pearl feel about that type of 'invasion'..she growled at him..instead of backing down, which he normally does...... Coz growled back, showing his teeth~~~and proceeded to try to mount her again!!!!! Maybe I overmedicated him and it had a reverse effect!! I don't know, but then we went to bed and he seemed to settle with no more problems. This morning and tonight, he has not tried to bother the troubled spots and I have not given him anymore of the pills... Laurie~~~ My vet never suggested a skin culture..but, I am hoping the specialist will be able to determine what the heck is wrong so we will not have this problem again in a couple of months. |
London and Tony had the exaccct same thing (all on their spine area) !!! !! About a month ago, I posted about this issue... Vet was so sure it was flea or environmental allergies but I disagreed .. We never knew what it was - Shaving their coat definitely helped, as well a bath with oatmeal soap... They ended up taking antibiotics and the scabs/sores completely went away after 3 weeks. We also changed dog food (before we used Canidae). |
