(Pearl, except for being painfully thin, is doing quite well this week!) Back to my poor Coz. At the beginning of this year, Coz began developing these awful sores on his back and sides. And of course, he would scratch and lick them making it worse. We took him to the vet,who said it may be an allergy and he suggested we cut away the hair from the affected areas and apply a cream...they eventually went away. A coupl of weeks ago, it began again~~only worse! Took him to the vet last Friday. Vet gave him a shot, some anitbiotic pills, and checked his thyroid levels, which were within normal range. Vet assured me that he would be better in a few days, but he did suggest that we shave Coz to help with the healing. He is not any better. Has been living with 'the cone' for the past week. Of course he looks and feels miserable but every time we take the cone off, he scratches and bite himself with a vengence.. ((Warning ~~kind of gross!!!))) Dino and I are taking him to our groomers at 5 to shave hime down. We will stay, help with the shave and then Dino will bathe him. In my mind, I know what will happen. The shaving will rip all the scabs off, hence he will be bleeding. Then, with the bath, Coz will be screaming! I am so sick about all of this!!! I called the vet this morning and asked for 'something' to give him so he will be a little 'relaxed' while we do this. I also asked for some topical meds to apply to these freshly open wounds. Vet gave me both meds. I am planning on posting the gross pictures of him after his shave down. Maybe someone has a clue on why this is happening! ((sorry, I seem to be counting on this forum for support and advice more and more )) |

Poor Coz If the vet thought it might be allergies...is there anything that has reappeared in his life that was there in the beginning of the year? It is the time of year that I start getting skin irritations from the dry weather...perhaps extra supplements or oil on the skin? |
Thanks Amanda!!! The vet did mention going to a skin specialist, and I am thinking that is what we are going to need to do. After this shavedown, if he is not healing, I will have to look into this. FYI....this IS a BYB bearded collie. I spent $400.00 to get him. He is about 8 years old and I have spent, oh gosh....over $4,000.00-$6,000.00 since ~~with his emotional issues AND his medical ones!!! Again..NOT his fault!!!! But~~~~ darn!!! For anyone and everyone who has met 'poor Coz'..he is a pitiful little man!!! But ...I love that quirky boy to bits!!!!! |
Poor Coz. I he gets better fast. |
Poor baby. |
Poor Coz I would really try and see if there is some correlation to the previous episode and this one. Maybe keep a diary in the future? (although hope you would not need it!) |
What a cute boy! Poor thing. Has the vet done any skin scrapings or swabs to see if he can tell exactly what it is? Sounds like an allergy because of the itching, but could also be an infection, or, as we learned from poor Gigi, mites. If it is an infection, and if you don't know specifically what bacteria you are dealing with, then the prescribed antibiotic might not be the right one to kill the cooties. (Trust me on this one. Oscar has had MULTIPLE drug resistant infections, and we always wait for the lab cultures to come back before treating.) A dermatologist sounds like a plan. Oscar just had his first visit with one last week. In the meantime, though, could the vet give you some diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to help poor Coz with the itching? It also might chill him out a bit. (Makes some dogs drowsy, but not Oscar.) Also, we use Betagen, a prescription spray, when things start up on Oscar's skin, as it contains Gentamycin and a steroid to quell the inflammation. Hoping Coz gets some relief soon. You need to get him to an allergy/dermatology specialist vet. I am wondering if it is an inhalant allergy? A skin punch test would tell but they have to be off any steroids for at least 2 weeks before you could get a true reading. If it is, a simple shot once a week to start & maybe tapering off to every other week or so once he's been desensitized will take care of it. Of course the hard part is the patience. It can take awhile to desensitize them & see any noticeable improvement. One of my OES had an inhalant allergy to housedust & housedust mite. She was better in the warmer weather when she could be outside & the house opned up. When it was closed up for the winter & she was stuck inside it was a bit worse. But once the shots got rolling you'd have never known she had a probnlem. We lived with this condition for over 10 years. |
