On Easter Sunday, we had about 20 people at the house and I was afraid he would really act up, but he was an angel. For the first time, he didn't wet in the house and he was really calm and laid back. He's been like that ever since. Over night, he stopped having accidents (before he was having at least 2 or 3 a day no matter how vigilant I was about taking him out. He stopped destroying everything in sight. I just had him at the vets and he is healthy and growing on schedule. Could this be a delayed reaction to neutering him. That was done a month ago. I hear so much about OES adolescent behavior, I am just wondering if I should be bracing myself for something. Maybe somebody stole my puppy and left me a GOOD dog. |

The same thing happened with Clyde. All of a sudden, he was just a good dog! The accidents subsided and he became much easier to live with. He's still not perfect by any means but definitely much improved! |
Same with Kayli!

Now that you mention it, Barney did the same thing. I got him the end of November (2 months old). I had to watch him every minute. If I got too involved in something (like reading posts on the OES Forum) and didn't catch his signals...opps. The last mistake was Christmas day. Never had a problem since. He's now 6 months. |
OK, so my MadMax will turn from crazydog to angeldog, I can hardly wait, he is almost 4 months and still quite a handful, but I do see him becoming a bit more calm than he was a month or two ago!! The one thing Max hasn't done (knock on wood) is have accidents, he had the usual accidents when we first got him home, but within a week stopped having them, (could be that I have been obsessive about getting him outside very often in the beginning). But he is the crazy dog who can't stay put for very long inside and is constantly looking for trouble, one of his favorites is when I play fetch with him inside all of a sudden, he'll run in the direction of the cat food and just gulp as much as he can before I can stop him!! kind of funny

Let me get this straight - you guys are complaining because your dogs turned GOOD??? I'm missing something here!
Chris |
Oh no, not complaining. Just not ready to brag yet. I have the sneaking suspicion that I am being set up for something big. |
Of course we're complaining. If all our guys were angels we wouldn't have anything to talk about and this forum would be really dull. |

Sharon Sharon, it sounds like you're describing Spike to a T (including the cat food incidents). When was Max born by the way, it sounds like our boys are about the same age? Spike was born on Christmas- December 25th. |
RollrXGirl, How cool is that, Max was born December 26, so Spike is one day older than Max!! Too bad we don't live closer to each other, our boys would have a field day together! I actually wouldn't mind living in So. Calif., my husband is originally from Camarillo.

Sharon That's awesome they're so close in age, I'd love to know more about Max like how much he weighs and all that good stuff, just for a reference point. Last week Spike weighed in at a whopping 31 lbs. I just realized that he is 15 weeks old as of today so we shall be making the appointment for his rabies shot and neutering very soon (yay!) so he'll be able to join a puppy daycare while I'm at work. All very exciting things. It's too bad you don't live down here, Camarillo is very close to where I live (the San Fernando Valley) and I know there's 2 adult sheepies (both shaved down and one is deaf, unfortunately) that frequent the dog park nearby but it sure would be nice to have another puppy Spike's age and size to play with here. |
Jasper too. I'm loving it. |
Hi RollerXGirl, I'm telling my husband it's time to move!! Anyway, Max was at the vet last week having his 3rd booster and he weighed 34 lbs. He's putting on about 2 1/2 lbs. a week at this point, don't you just love how they look at this age. So when are you having Spike neutured? I have to say I'm looking forward to getting Max fixed, even though it means taking his manhood away. I think it's the right thing to do though! I'm going to start getting him out more now, he is very friendly with other dogs so far. That will be great to have Spike in doggie daycare, he'll get lots of action while your at work, I'm at home, but if I was working I'd want Max to be busy. I'll try to post some pictures soon, and I'd love to see some current pics of Spike

Spike is now at 36.2 lbs as of this afternoon (15 weeks - 16 on Saturday) and got his Rabies shot...the last one til next year, yay!! One of these days I'll get around to taking more photos of Spike. He was gorgeous and clean on Sunday afternoon after playing at the dog park and getting a bath but that cleanliness is long gone by now |
Lol. Dog park and clean do not mix! |
Exactly, that's why the bath always comes after the dog park on Sundays, lol. I think he takes home half the park in his coat when I look at the bathtub water! |
I know! Clyde carries it all in his paws. He always has a dog park stink to him too He needs a bath so bad right now but I made an appointment with the groomer for Saturday so I want to get my money's worth! |
I'm saving my money for the few months of change-over from puppy coat to adult coat--that's when Spike will be seeing a groomer. Until then, he's all mine to groom |
Clyde has been changing gracefully but he's gotten pretty shaggy. He needs a hardcore bath and blow out and a nice trim all around. Until this appointment, I've been doing it myself too. I need a break now! |
Speaking of clean dogs, Max was just groomed today and he smells so delicious, of course I realize he'll get his stinky puppy smell back very soon, but I'm sure enjoying his transformation, and I will take him back for another grooming session when he needs it. I only had to pay $14.99 today, it was a puppy special!! |
You guys will miss that puppy stage when it's over Soon you'll be posting on "getting a puppy" |
I know, I know Just today we were petting Clyde and realized that when you part his hair, it's almost all gray now like a big boy! He's getting so big now too. After I posted those pictures and looked at how tiny he was when he got him, that's when it hit me. He's over doubled in size! |
HA! I'm watching for your name under getting a puppy, Jill |
Hey, I don't have kids, whaddya expect?
Funny, I moved out of my last house because it was too big for just me. The other day I found myself thinking if I still lived there, I could have another dog since they'd have even more room to run around in the house... Darn it. Stop putting ideas in my head. I'm so impressionable. |
That's why I'm here Since I can't get any puppies right now I want everyone else to. |
Look at the peer pressure! This is going to turn into an afterschool special.
Starring BestDogsx4 as the pusher and Butterstoch as the impressionable innocent! |
I know it's mean Mandy, your post cracked me up. |
The worst part is I'm getting sucked in too! |
I brought it up with James last night and he said if I get another dog, he's going to buy the house next door and move in there. I told him that would be cool and we could run a human size Habitrail between the houses. I don't think he liked that idea any better... |
I don't know how I missed this thread, but it has given me a good laugh...
As for puppies growing up and suddenly behaving better... it does seem to be sudden... Dancer seemed to mature after her first heat at 11 months old. Sky already seems more mature and laid back at almost 10 months old, but hasn't had a heat cycle yet. I wonder if a lot has to do with them being spayed or neutered, the hormone levels drop and give way to more sensibility? LOL My first oes though did not settle after she was spayed, it took years for her...lol... when she finally did, she got fat and I had to switch foods. Once she was on the senior dog formula at about 6 years old she calmed considerably, so I think with her the lower protien helped. Then of course most dogs eventually run into a stubborn teen phase, anywhere from 8 or 9 months all the way up to 2 years in some cases. Some never do.... I dunno.... As for "puppy fever" hitting the forum.... I know the feeling! I don't want another puppy right now, but I am getting anxious to raise a litter of my own. Dancer is 16 months next week, so it is getting closer and I keep going through different thoughts, eager and excited to meet her first litter, worry about how everything will go, worry about being able to part with any of them, worry about the homes they'll be in.... I can already envision the pup I would like to keep out of her litter when the time comes,a big girl, one with lots of black, hopefully a black racoon type mask, black ears, deep brown eyes, mischievious but loving nature, I even have a name picked out for her...lol... how sad is it to dream of puppies?? |
My husband and I would love to get another puppy but now is a bad time. I've been living up north for the past year(business) and he's been downstate with the dogs. It's hard for me to go home for a day or two because the dogs(especially Beau) get depressed when I leave. We are planning on moving up here by fall and will get a bigger yard, that will be the time for another dog. Also, with Beau needing extra attention and patience right now a puppy would be too much. I live vicariously through all the new puppy owners and love to read their posts. In the meantime I will continue my ways! |
