Oh, I think they can! Our lab was just a few months old when I left him in the house for a few minutes NOT in his crate. When I returned and opened the front door, there he was, the cover of my "Cesars Way" in his mouth & the rest of the pages torn & strewn about the front room. Guess he didn't think much of Cesar Millan and his ways!! (I really wish I had taken a photo, little puppy dog eyes, tail wagging so excited I was home and Cesar, torn & covered in slobber) |
Joy's preference is a magazin from the norwegian Cennel Club "Hundesport".......wow does it taste good? The have their own way of reading and pretty good taste, I think. Mady reads only the best dog-stories I guess? |
I FINALLY learned that books are not to be left lying around. Simon had a taste for them. |
Would that author be James Herriott? Author of "All Creatures Great and Small" and many other classics. I love his books so much that we actually named our first son "Tristan" (a very lovable character in his books) 23 years ago. There is also a great television series based on his books produced by th BBC. I'm a transplanted Canadian living in the USA, and I've not seen this show on American TV. Those of you who've never read any of his books, pick one up and you will thoroughly enjoy it!! Check out the series, should be on DVD, it's a must for us animal lovers! |

I have read and reread his books many times and loved the tv series too. So much so that I have been working hard on David to convince him to travel to the area. We have a friend currently living in London and I am working the angle of visiting him and then heading north to the Thirsk area, which was where James Herriott lived (although I think his real name was Alf!). I just wish that we could bring Mady. I have this image of us hiking through the countryside and finding a cozy pub in a village. I wonder if you can still bring dogs into pubs in the U.K. Hmm, that might be a good retirement idea here in Canada, Pub/dog playgroup. I have a sudden craving for a pint, now! |
You can still takes dogs into some pubs here in the uk |
I've been to Herriott country and the dales of Yorkshire. It's exactly like how it's portrayed in his books. You really must go! Yes dogs are welcomed guests in many establishments. May I also recommend two books about dogs that have touched my heart deeply. One is "Sight Hound" by Pam Houston. I finished this book the night before Sammy passed unexpectantly. It was God's way of preparing me. The other amazing book is "Merle's Door" by Ted Kerasote. No other book captures the love between man and dog any better. Prepare to go through a bix of kleenex! |
Tonks and Luna only ever destroyed one book. In fact they have only ever taken interest in one book, and then promtply destroyed it. It was the training manual for their collars. So yes, I'm positive that they can read. |

This is a hilarious thread! Nola only eats Real Simple. My guess is that she's interested in all the good recipes that she never gets to try! |

My youngest brother is 17 years my junior. He is named Tristan for the same reason. My Mom had another possible name for a boy (cant even remember what it was) but my two siblings and I outvoted her, so Tristan it is. |
That's so cool Mim!! Tristan is a rare name for a boy especially in the US. It also happens to be a chick magnet name. My son Tristan is very handsome and an athlete but when he tells the girls his name, they positively swoon! I've seen it first hand, HaHa!! Is that the case with your brother? |
It's not a very common name here either. I don't know about being a chick magnet name, Tristan doesn't socialise with his old lady sister. It would cramp his style. |
About 10 years ago they had the series of All Creatures Great and Small on PBS in Milw. We watched them all several times but I've never read the books. I've also lost a few library books to the pups over the years. They weren't any smarter for it either. |
