have you had your blade sharpened? are you going with the grain of the hair? is your dog matted to the skin? if you have a blaster/high velocity dryer try blasting the matts first to get them away from the skin or try a blade that is shorter, maybe a wet shave to give a bit more hair being left try a matt breaker first when brushing, it spilts that matts making them easier to brush out good luck |
I assume the blades were sharpened by an experienced blade sharpener. Is the cutting bar moving? Is the motor struggling. Are the blades lubed? I'm sure yes to all of the above. How matted or dirty is the dog? More mats, the higher the number blade you need to get under all. You can't cut thru a mat easily. I've had to use 15 blade on the worst cases. I have had blades that just never worked right and ended up tossing them. What a waste. Before you toss, try another blade. Sometimes the problem is as simple as a stone caught in the blade preventing proper movement. |
Throw blades away?? Ugh. Try a different sharpener. There are a few good ones out there. If the clipper isn't moving fairly easily through the animals coat, it is one of two things. Mats: Use a split tooth blade. This will help, although you'll need to use a little force to cut through the mats. Or use a higher number blade, to cut under the mat. This option will take off a lot of hair. Dull blade: Try a different sharpener. Call your local pet groomer and ask who they use, and are they happy with him. Call several shops. Not just one. Use the favorite. There are a few clipper blade sharpeners that aren't worth a darn. Also, on occasion brand new blades come from the manufacturer improperly sharpened and just won't cut no matter what you do. Richard Southern Sharpeners |
Richard, I've thrown away maybe 3 blades in 40 years, so I'm not willy nilly suggesting it, but those three never cut well and after 3 different attempts to get them sharpened, they still were trash. Maybe a manufacture problem? I'd still try a new blade now just to see if the first blade is screwed up. Plus you need to have several on hand for a shave down, just to allow them to cool down as you work. |
Thank you all for your replies, the dog in question has always had a troublesome coat, hes a rescue as are all my OES over the last 30 years, i never set out to have more than one at a time but i keep getting the usual phone call can i help and heh presto another one appears like magic, 4 at the moment. Regards the coat i have only myself to blame having been in France with them and not had the time to keep them trimmed he has become matted , the others comb out without a problem he has a coat that matts in an instant normally a 3.3/4 blade does the job but not this time so i am going to have to bite the bullet and take it all off for the comfort of the dog , i gidnt want to go too close so maybe a number 7, ce la vie. Maybe try to find a different cut for this particular OES to save the frustration. You can keep the body shorter, the legs and head longer if you still like the shaggy look. Note: cleft lip, might be offensive to some- http://oesusa.com/Shaving-An-Old-Englis ... dex.95.jpg A 7 skip tooth is a good choice for now... it will zip the coat off quickly. I see that Andis makes a 6 blade but it's a finishing blade and may not go through as well. http://www.jefferspet.com/andis-ultraed ... c/p/AC-R7/ (I want one of these!) Maybe raking out some of the undercoat will help keep you to keep the coat longer next time? Some OESs just seem to tangle and twist a lot faster than others. depending on how often you use your clippers and since your blades are sharp maybe a new blade drive assembly ? |
