shaking his head to his left

ugh I think i'm starting to regret moving to California because my guys keep developing medical issues. This morning i woke up to London shaking/twitching his head to his left as if he has Tourettes'. It's not continuous though - happens maybe every 20 seconds for 1 or 2 seconds..

His ears are squeakkky clean, theres nothing in there - not a lot of hair, its not yeasty or smelly-etc and I doubbbbt he has ear mites. I just flushed it and nothing came out. Plus, He's not scratching his ear so i'm not sure what's wrong with him. sigh. London's 5 by the way.

He took k9 advantix flea meds two nights ago -- and completely finished his antibotics (for skin infection) last week. Im really hoping it's a side effect from the antibiotics. He's on Canidae dog food for the past 2 years.

It's so frustrating and I hope it's nothing serious. Has anyone has this issue with their pup?

calling the vet soon.

I have no idea what it might be...
but Aska is always scratching her right ear... until she whines.
And when I rub her ear, she does some funny noises.
She's also often shaking her head.

Hope London is feeling better :-)
Shaking head is usually a clasic sign of an infection...but, maybe its in deeper and you can't see it? Maybe a but or something got in there? Curious to know what the vet says...
to clarify .. he's shaking his left ear (it flutters).. not his head.

Anyway - just got back from the vet.. No infections - his ears are clean as they can be. Vet is unsure what's causing him to do this - she doesnt think it's neurological since it's just his ear that keeps flickering. She gave me montemax to relieve itching (she strongly believes this.. I disagree because he's not scratching or even acknowledges it's itchy). His ear is not even red. He'd be sound asleep and his left ear will flutter. argh. I'm going to see if i can find another vet in the area for a second opinion tomorrow--- this is one of those days when I truly miss :hearts: my vet (canfield) clinic in Rochester (NY) - THEY know what they're doing.. not here. Is there anyone from the Bay Area on this forum who could recommend a good vet?

I'd call Advantix and ask if it might be a
reaction to the topical flea/tick product.

Advantix Pet Parent's Website offers this number-
Bayer Consumer Care at (800) 255-6826

An adverse side effect can be paraesthesia.
"an abnormal sensation, as prickling, itching"
Wondering if his ear ticking/flicking like that might be a reaction to that sensation.

Paraesthesia is mentioned at the bottom of this page-
http://www.advantix.info/Questions-and- ... html#c5921
Thankks! Going to call them now. London's ear is still flickering- poor baby. He looks soo uncomfortable - sleeping on his left ear to prevent it from flicking. :(

Just called Advantix and spoke with a vet tech. She claimed that if it was truly a side effect - it would have happened immediately -- should have been gone by now also she mentioned that since it's a topical medication - it would have not caused that.

called the vet- she didnt seem concerned - said to wait one more day and then come back tomorrow if his ear still flicker.

argh.
I hope this goes away quickly.
me too :( I filmed London in my art studio today and just uploaded them on youtube --- to see if anyone experienced this... :(:(

the first video was filmed at the vet yesterday.

Ooo... there's more motion than I thought. :(
Definitely something's irritating him.

Poor dude... you can tell he doesn't like to be photographed!
i believe it's a muscle twitch. i was concerned when my guy had this, but i do not remember how long it went on. it may have been a day or two, maybe more, but went away.
there was no medical reason for him to have it either.
Poor London! I've never seen a dog do that before. To me, it looks like an uncontrollable muscle twitch. When something is bothering Oscar's ear, it might twitch a bit, but then he goes digging at it with his paws, or rubbing his ear along the floor. (Usually, his hair has gotten a little long and is tickling him.....) He could never leave it alone if it were painful or itchy.

Laurie and Oscar
It looks like something is bothering the ear. You can tell because sometimes he tilts his head.
London's ear still hasnt improved. All night I could feel the bed shake (from his ears). Went to the vet - they dont know what to do either. I went to another vet and he insisted it's an infection but it's not (lab tests, ear checks has been done thoroughly). This is getting expensive for this kind of cat and mouse chase.

So they asked to wait throughout the weekend to see if it improves (I mentioned about muscle twitch... thanks everyone). :plead: :plead: :plead:
just an update in case your dog ever go through the same thing.

London's ear twitched and twitched until Sunday. We were this close to taking him to a neurologist on Monday. Well I decided to revisit the idea that maybe it was an allergic reaction to flea meds and searched online for tips. I realized that many dogs had the same reaction after being applied with K9 Advantix (some even twitched to death) So after people's recommendations, I washed London with Dawn soap and to my amazement - the twitching went away that evening. He did twitched once this morning but hasn't done that since then.

I'm never going to use flea meds again - and am just happy that my boy is back to his bouncy self. I think Tony is too   .
I used the Advantix treatment on Brick. Once.
The skin on his back got so sensitive that as soon as you touched his back, he'd krinkle up all his fur on his back and his whole body would droop in the middle. And droop quite a bit!
I knew it was the treatment because it never happened before to him and it slowly went away.

Now I use Frontline with no issues.
We used Frontline for years while living Rochester - due to being a "tick friendly" state. I do wonder if the environment has an effect on my dogs. It's unusually drier here and they did develop environmental allergies a month ago -- but I don't think i'll take the chance of trying another flea topical here again.

If we do move back to upstate New York - it's probably something i'll have to revisit.
I'm so glad he's doing better. :D
Please ask your vet to report the side effect to the mfr.
Glad to hear he is feeling better! We used Advantrix and ahve been using it for four years now. Are you saying you think it was a side effect from the Advantrix? I am not understanding as I do not apply it near the ears at all. I apply it down the back area and shoulder blade area. Never around the ears. We haven't had an issue yet but again, we never applied it near the ears. :?
Ear twitching is mentioned for cats...
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... 8&aid=2252

I had only found one site that mentioned it for dogs.
http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/neu ... d_toxicity

A friend had a problem with Advantix over a year ago. Washing the
area with Dawn dish soap helped stop that problem too. It was more
a case where the dog was trying to get way from it, hide from it.

Hi - we used frontline/advantix for years too - it could have just been london (new reaction to medication) or it could have been the medication itself. we dont know. If you google 'dog twitching' or "advantix side effects twitching" you'll see there are several different allergic reactions. Smaller breeds and cats tend to suffer more.

so if anyone has this similar reaction - immediately wash the area with Dawn soap (although I washed every part of my dog's body) and call the vet.

and I reported this incident to Advantix and EPA/FDA.
last year i put avantix on duffy what a mistake it burnt a hole in his skin was the grosses thing i ever saw.. my vet stopped selling it.. glad you found the problem
Its a shame the vet at Advantix wouldnt admit that there might be a reaction when there's all that info on the web.

So glad you got to the bottom of the issue and London is ok now. :clappurple:
I live in Oregon and flea meds are a MUST. I've used frontline in the past, and its been fine- but I have a rabbit as well and frontline is toxic in any amount for rabbits. Advantix is supposed to be the worst- I guess the pesticide they use is old and more harmful? something like that....

Here my vet recommends only Comfortis. Its a chewable tablet so there is no external pesticide to rub on stuff or your dog. It also has some side effects, but since its delivered systemically and is "natural" its better for the dog
We are switching over mostly for the rabbits sake, but also because its healthier for my boys.

"Comfortis™ is the very first FDA-approved, chewable, beef-flavored tablet that actually kills fleas and prevents flea infestations on dogs for thirty days. Comfortis contains the eco-friendly active ingredient,

Spinosad which comes from a natural soil dwelling bacterium called Saccharopolyspora spinosa; that is reported to have been collected from the soil out of an abandoned rum distillery by a scientist who was on vacation on a Caribbean Island back in 1982. Comfortis is an eco-friendly flea control product that works."
Just a quick note...

Talk to your veterinarian before using a product on weak, old, medicated, sick, pregnant, or nursing pets, or on pets that have previously shown signs of sensitivity to flea or tick products.

I haven't done as much research as I should yet but...
Quote:
Many flea control products contain insecticides, which affect the nerves and muscles of this parasite. While veterinarian state flea control products for dogs are safe (even over-the-counter products), the EPA is studying these flea control aids for safety and efficacy. ( http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/health/pe ... seval.html )

Flea shampoos for dogs, for example, contain toxins, insecticides, and neurotoxins to kill fleas.

Do NOT use any flea or tick products on debilitated dogs without talking with your vet. The problem with this product warning is you may not know your dog is debilitated. :( A friend and forum member used Advantix and her baby is now suffering end stage liver failure. She may very well have had some immune thing going on but this likely pushed her over to cirrhosis of the liver. I applied Advanage to Meesha... we had to redo a blood test not long after applying it and her ALT shot up to over 1,200 when it had just previously been only slightly elevated (normal is -100). I can't prove the correlation but it was the first time we had ever used Advantage. During testing we discovered Meesha's liver was smaller than normal.

 That wasn't so quick. Take time to read the product insert or research the product online. We can't go without flea/tick control in many places... we just have to try to find the one that is safest for our dogs.
Hello, I stumbled upon this forum while looking up information on Advantix. I applied Advantix to my 9 year old Bichon and he reacted in exactly the same manner as your dog. The vets office says that they have never had this reported before. I have washed my dog twice - the second time using Dawn.
I will NEVER use this product again. I am horrified at the results. We used to use Advantage with no problems. The vet had stopped selling Advantage and started selling Advantix.
I know the original post about London dates from 2010 and his problem has been successfully treated.(yay!) But I would like to mention that if there is a vet you trust but cannot visit, contact him/her with a phone call or an email message. Sharing pictures and videos makes telemedicine possible. And these animal healers typically really care about their past and present patients. So a vet should be receptive to assist an owner whose pet is in distress- no matter where you live.
Thanks for sharing the YouTube video. My little chi hua hua mix is doing exactly the same thing. I put advantix on 2 days ago and the twitching started within 24 hours. Ears are clear. I now know that this is the reaction some dogs get to advantix. I will wash it off later.
So Glad he is better. Think we should all be aware of this product!!! Liz and Digby xxx
