4 month male puppy at the Ottawa Humane Society

I was visiting the Ottawa Humane Society website when I noticed this OES puppy
http://www.ottawahumane.ca/adoption/petharbor_dogs.cfm
(5th dog down, named Bullet)

BULLET - ID#A121983
I am a neutered male, black and white Old English Sheepdog.
The shelter staff think I am about 4 months old.
I was surrendered to the shelter by my owner.
I have been at the shelter since Sep 20, 2010.
I love to: Run and play with other animals.
I have: The best shaggy coat!!
I get along well with: Kids and anyone how has a treat for me.
I would rather not: be alone for a long time because I am still learning to go outside.
I need: An experienced owner with the knowledge of the herding breed type dog.

For more information about this animal, call:
Ottawa Humane Society at (613)725-3166 ext: 258

I think Mady needs a brother!

This concerns me if he's still available for adoption.
That's an awful long time for a dog to be at a shelter...
especially an OES puppy.

I tried to call but would have had to leave a message. I'll try to
write to get more info.
David is calling too. I think we might go visit sometime this week and find out what the deal is with this boy. I am wondering if the herding thing was too much for some family. I wish that there was some kind of support group for people with new puppies, to help them get past the sometimes rough spots (remember that post about me standing on the sofa crying, while a tiny Mady bark bark barked at me! ). We had our own support group with our breeder and you folks, and that made a huge difference. People give up too soon on their dogs!
I tried calling too and got a machine. I'll keep trying. I thought that too, if he's only 4 months, and was surrendered on Sep 20, he was just 8-10 weeks max. How did such a young puppy end up there, and why wasn't he snatched up quickly? Though the posting says "information is less than 1 hour old". Maybe the Humane Society wanted him to be a few weeks older before making him available?

And Jennie, don't think that thought didn't jump into my head as soon as I saw him! 8)
He might have been brought in at around 4 months.
Some places don't update the info as time goes by...
so he could be closer to 6 months now.
Bullet IS still available.
Oh, my goodness. This little boy is simply adorable.
Hoping someone here will adopt him. :hearts:

I agree, Mady needs a brother.
Ummm I think Kim you posted this morning that you wanted a boy pup and a hula hoop....gosh dreams may come true. I can send Howie's hoop to you!

Fabulous idea -
Chewie would send his hula hoop too - they are out of season in the stores up north here!
Fingers and paws crossed here!
It's a sign, it's a sign.
Ditto, Mady needs a sib.
Kim, David, we aren't trying to pressure you  .

But honestly, only if he's a good match for you!
^^ Truly we aren't.
We all know he would have to be a good match for everyone in your family
or you will be in for some difficult adjustments and lots of stress. We're all
just REALLY hoping he's a match! :D

I did ask the shelter to let me know if they have any problems placing him.
I got a call back today. He's already been adopted. I would have liked to have met him, but I'm hoping he's in a great loving home now. :crossed:

He has already been removed from the Humane Society site, so I'm thinking that he was just put up in the past day or two, despite being at the humane society since Sep 20th. Maybe he was only 8-10 weeks when brought in and they wanted him to get a bit older before making him available for adoption. I am not surprised then, would seem strange for a young puppy as cute as that not to be snatched up. I'm happy he's adopted already.
So sorry he didn't get to go home with you. I'm sure there will
be others that will be in need of a good home. Thanks for sharing
the update. Hoping he has a wonderful life.
After reading this thread last night the first thing I did was to call David and Kim to see if they were actually intersted in Bullet because if not I would try to get OESOCC rescue involved. As I could not reach David and Kim I did call our rescue coordinator and she was aghast with the story as it was then known and was certainly willing to take him into her rescue program if he was purebred and preferably docked. Then I called the Ottawa Humane Society but only got their answering machine so a message was left asking if they would work with breed rescue and to call me back.

Well I just got off the phone with a delightfully caring young lady who gave me an update about Bullet. In condensed form here are the good points:
- Most importantly Bullet was placed last night with a family who currently have a(several) Bernese Mountain Dog(s) but have previously had OES. So it looks like the little tyke is finally off to a good start and home.
- He easily passed all his behavoural tests so they were able to place him themselves without potential harm or liability issues.
- Bullet had been fostered out to an unnamed person/family for the intervening two months where he had recovered his health, gained strength and began to grow.
- He was only listed yesterday

Now for the not so good side of the story

- Bullet was an owner turn-in and was in fact then only about 2 months of age as many of us here feared!
- He was purchased at a pet store as - now I hope you are sitting for this - a Shih Tzu!!!
- He was turned in almost immediately because of health issues as the young couple who had purchased him could not afford any veterinary bills. Chances are it was diahrea and vomiting because of food and water changes combined with the stress of a new home. Throw in puppy aged worms for good measure since he was from a pet store. The lady was not allowed to give me details but when I mentioned this was my suspicion she hummed agreement.
- Bullet had no identification of any kind - no tattoos, no microchip - the Ottawa Humane Society had no way of finding Bullet's breeder to give them first right of refusal and recover "their" dog (responsibility).

In the end things turned out about as well as could be hoped for considering how young Bullet must have been when taken from his mother and thrown into the puppy mill sales meat grinder and clearly il-prepared first "owners". I can only hope he doesn't eventually develop behavioural problems that lead him to be turned in a second time.
David and Kim I am sorry that you didn't get the chance to even see Bullet but given this new information I cannot help but think that he would not have been a good match for you and Mady at this time. I'm confident that there will come a day when you are ready for Mady to have a brother or sister and you can then approach that family decision in a more deliberate and slower paced process.
Fortunately I can call OESOCC rescue tonight and let them know Bullet won't be another of their clients. I am however now on the Ottawa Humane Society list of "Partners in Placement" in case they encounter another Bobtail in need of rescue/placement.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
Thanks Carl for the update! I'm glad he got to a good home! :high5:
Thanks for the update Carl!

Kim, David, should we start sending you posts for sheepies that need a home    ???
Carl,

I also contacted Marg Trenholm yesterday and she does know that Bullet has been adopted.

What a horrible story with hopefully a happy ending.
Glad he's going to be with an experienced family.
Thanks, Carl!
I am very glad that Bullet found a home, double delighted that he went to a home that has Berners

"if he was purebred and preferably docked"

Out of curiosity, if he was an OES Mix would he have been welcomed into the OESOCC rescue program.
My apologies, Carl, for not calling you back last night. I meant to tell you that I had contacted Amber who had contacted the OES rescue, but it was late when I got your message and didn't want to wake you and your furkids.

I found the last day or so very interesting. It was David who spotted the puppy, David who followed up, David who kept raising the subject. Interesting...

It did make me think very seriously about the impact of a second dog on our lives. David is still recovering from his heart attack. We are still financially recovering from that damn wedding. Then there is the added issue of a rescue dog. Am I ready for a rescue dog? I am so very full of admiration for you forum folks who rescue a dog, but are WE ready for one? We both work full time. I run home at lunch and walk Mady. Could I handle walking two? Mady has spoiled us somewhat in that we knew that she came from good parents, knew that she was raised well, socialized well. A rescue dog is a mystery.

On the other had, I read the stories of the sheepies rescued here and they always touch me. All of this to say, this shows that David and I need to do some real thinking so that the next time such a situation happens, we would be better prepared to make a decision.

Now having said all of the above, I am pretty certain that, had we gone to the Humane Society and Bullet was still there, unless there had been major aggression issues, I am betting we would have added him to the family. The most interesting thing in all of this is that it was DAVID pushing it. So this means we need to talk, need to figure out money, need to really think about whether it would be good for us.

One other thing that I did NOT know is that we possibly could have fostered this dog. I feel like calling them and adding my name to some list somewhere...
Hope this pup is in a good home now. A shih tzu! wow that is way off. I have two shih tzus also. plus my gigi and bogey. shih tzus are similar to oes in personality but that is where the similarities end
