From my experience you either LOVE it, or HATE it... And I am also becoming aware of different recipes for the good ole dish. Thought it would be fun to see how many of us add it to our holiday "must haves" and what recipe you use. I LOVE it, and must have it. The rest of the family will eat it, but wouldn't cry ( like I would) without it. So, my sister always makes it, and I bring home the left overs. Her recipe: 1 large package french cut frozen green beans- thawed and salted 2 cans cream of mushroom soup 1 can sliced mushrooms 2 TBSP melted butter French's fried onions Combine beans , soup, butter, mushrooms -- turn into cassorole dish. Top with onions. Bake at 350 35-45 minutes until bubbly, and onions are lightly browned. Very simple , very easy... heaven Next? |

I'm more on the HATE IT side than Love it. I dont hate it, but it's just not my thing. DH on the other hand NEEDS it to be a part of both Christmas and T-day. Our recipe's pretty much the same: 1 large bag frozen French style green beans, thawed if I remember to take them out early enough 2 cans Cream of Mushroom soup 1/4 cup milk Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, add onions for the last 5 minutes or so until they're golden. |
Don't hate it but don't like it and don't care if I ever eat it again. That said, my sister makes it the best, using the traditionally recipe but adding half and half. The best part is the onions. Straight from the can. |
I WANT THE WHOLE CASSEROLE. I actually made it this weekend ...just cause. If someone makes it with anything other than french cut... I won't even touch it. |
I like it with french green beans also but my granddaughter has to have it every thanksgiving, just wouldn't be the same without. |
I really like it, but Todd LOVES it. He made sure it was on the assigned foods menu (a nephew and his wife are bringing it)... We have the big 40+ people Finch's Thanksgiving this Saturday...I am going to fast, so I can eat some of everything! My favorite food holiday, and my birthday week as well....all the best!!! We make it pretty much the same - and yes, the onions on top totally make it great! |
Love it. My two kids would complain if we didn't have it. |
Hate!! You can't bury it in enough canned yucky onions for me. Maybe a big bag on onion rings from Sonic would help. I also don't like candied sweet potatoes with all the stuff on top. |
I do not like it at all and I don't actually understand why anybody does. |
You haters are nuts. |
I love love love love love GB casserole! I do think it's funny like Lori said, it's love it or hate it! I'm glad I'm on the right side of that debate! |

One more - I asked John, my homecare client, the "question of the day"...... And he is in the HATE it! group. |
Alton Brown's GB casserole might be tolerable. Problem is the time involved and the oven space. My poor oven barely holds a 17 lb bird, no room for anything else. Quote: Ingredients For the topping: 2 medium onions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons panko bread crumbs 1 teaspoon kosher salt Nonstick spray For beans: 1 pound fresh green beans, rinsed and trimmed 1 gallon water 2 tablespoons kosher salt For sauce: 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 12 ounces mushrooms, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup chicken broth 1 cup half-and-half Directions Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F. Combine the onions, flour, panko and salt in a large mixing bowl and toss to combine. Coat a sheet pan with nonstick spray and evenly spread the onions on the pan. Bake in the oven until golden brown, tossing every 10 minutes, for approximately 30 minutes. Once done, remove from the oven and set aside until ready to use. Turn the oven down to 400 degrees F. While the onions are cooking, prepare the beans. Bring a gallon of water and 2 tablespoons of salt to a boil in an 8-quart saucepan. Blanch for 5 minutes. Drain in a colander and immediately plunge the beans into a large bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Drain and set aside. Melt the butter in a 12-inch cast iron skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms begin to give up some of their liquid, approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and nutmeg and continue to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute. Add the broth and simmer for 1 minute. Add the half-and-half and cook until the mixture thickens, approximately 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in 1/4 of the onions and all of the green beans. Top with the remaining onions. Place into the oven and bake until bubbly, approximately 15 minutes. Remove and serve immediately. |
My idea of a green for the dinner is to go to Costco and get their spanikopetas! That's when I don't have anymore homemade frozen in the freezer.......which I don't. |

I love green beans, but I find mushrooms to be most disturbing. So I am in the "EWWWWWWWW" column. Laurie, Mushroom Averse |
I've never even tried it. Maybe you guys could throw a little in an envelope and send it my way? |
can't stand it either. but then i don't usually like food that is 'mixed' up. |
I love GB casserole. I remember a few years ago my big bro made a comment about always have gb casserole on holidays. I told him you have to have it and that it was well loved. I had made two big casseroles and there was not a speck left. |
I love GB casserole and my family MUST have it on the holiday menu for both Turkey day and Christmas--I have altered the recipe a bit over the years--family favorite traditional recipe BUT--mix the canned onions with the soup and milk and top with cheddar cheese--bake and about 10 minutes before it is done add more onions to the top and brown until crispy. |

It doesn't seem appealing AT ALL. I bet my dad (from missouri) would like it. |
I also hate candied sweet potatoes. I can't even taste test it for someone. |
I like the candied sweet potatoes or the casserole with marshmallows. |
Joahaeyo wrote: You haters are nuts. exactly.....it is awesome...and it is just bla without the fried onions on top... |

I am in the LOVE IT category. In fact I had to remind my cousin, the menu maker, about it. I can't believe she forgot the GBC!!! This ^^ looks DELISH!!!! |
At our family celebration Saturday, my nephew who was assigned the GBC was a no show!! Note - next time assign it to a more reliable family member!! |

I really don't like it. I will eat some if someone brings it, to be polite. But I won't make the stuff. I just don't like my veggies that over cooked and soggy. |

I hope you learned your lesson!!! |
As a Canadian, I have never heard of green bean casserole! Having read through the pros and cons, this is definitely something I might try in the future. Many thanks!!! |
Me too..another Canadian, I have never tried it. I have only heard of it from an american tv station that had a commercial advertising fried onions that you'd use in the casserole. Hmm, I have never tried fried onions in a can before either. I have so much to learn! peg |
I think its definitely an American tradition. When our American family members bring dishes to family events its usually casseroles. I think Canadians tend to be more "meat and potatoes" kind of eaters...everything is served separately. I still laugh when they brought turnip greens to a get together...they eat the part we throw out and couldn't believe we actually ate the turnip part! |
