So we got on the golf cart and went down to a little area where they dock small boats. We went out on this little narrow dock, looking around then all of a sudden I heard a breathing sound below me. They were right there. I could have bent down and touched them( I didn't, maybe next time). Ok I can come home now. They are so neat. They were both covered with alot of barnacles, I didn't know they looked like that. Everyone have a good week. We are off to have a new adventure. Lisa and Frankie(can't wait to get home to see him) |

WOW!!! I love manatees!!! They are so sweet and gentle. Years ago, Dino and I vacationed in Redington Beach, FL and we were able to 'swim with the Manatees' at Seven Sister's Lake. It is a safe enviroment for them and we had to follow strict rules. We could not go after them, but had to wait for them to approach us. It was such a treat when a momma and baby got up close and personal with me. The baby nuzzled my face..I think she gave me a kiss!!!! It was a very special day for us!!! I would love to do it again!!!! LUCKY YOU!!!!!! |
I love mantees too and would love to do something like that. |
My husband and daughter feel like they were in heaven to swim with manatees. Well, hubby would except that he has no interest in visiting Florida...... Some years back hubby and I were in Boston while he attended a conference. On our last day there, after the conference had ended, we went on a whale sighting cruise and were excited to see a number of whales. Just from the boat, obviously. |
We did the whale watching off the Cape - it WAS great. Now Manatees, I would like to see them as well. And go for it next time - touch them!!! Sounds like a lot of fun |
I've swam with manatees before. They really are gentle giants. They'll come right up to you and if you scratch their flipper pits, they'll roll over and you can rub their stomachs. For the best manatee experience, you should go to the Crystal River area in Florida (Crystal River, Homosassa Springs, Homosassa). I think March is the best time of year. There are plenty of outfits that can take you to where they are and then you snorkel with 'em. Or you can rent a small boat and look for them yourself. You should also visit Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. They have a unique structure that goes under the water (like a small aquarium) that allows you to watch the manatees without getting wet. |
I love Manatees and have been lucky enough to see them many time. Their noses remind me of a sheepdogs. lol A few years ago we were at Sebastian Inlet and a storm was coming in...we were swimming in the basin and 14 Manatee came in. They were swimming all around us and we touched them, they were fascinating. The sad thing is many have scars from boat propellers cutting them..a big problem here in the Indian River Lagoon. In Port St John's Florida Power and Light (FPL) ran a power plant and in the winter when it gets cool (for Florida) the Manatee would crowd around the towers. FPL has changed the towers now, they are no longer there, but they have something there to warm the water for the Manatees. Manatees are really beautiful, gentle creatures. |
How fun! |
We're going to FL in mid-Feb again this year. We were told last year was unseasonably cool for central Florida...but seemed balmy to us, we had almost 4 ft. of snow on the ground when we left home. We're hoping for warmer weather this time around, I'd love to swim with the manatee's and Bob want's to go airboating. Many manatee's and turtles were being rescued and were distressed by the cool temps. last winter. |
