Fetch ?

Hi,

I'm just curious.... does your oes fetch ?
I've been trying to teach Aska to fetch but she just runs away with the toy.
She just won't fetch !!!!

We got Butchy at 3 months and he pretty much took up the game of fetch right away. His only issue is he doesn't want to let go so we just ignore him until he drops it. He backs up and sits and waits for it to be be tossed again.

He is the only one of the 3 we've had that did fetch and he won't do it outside.
Ilene, wow you're lucky !
Aska has does it once! (inside)
That was because her bed was behind me!
I've tried that again... but she won't come near me with her toys !
Only drops it first and THEN comes
Only Crumpet fetched and then just a few times. The brain cells for dedicated fetch didn't make it to this breed, they are herders, not fetchers.

I'd love to have a dog to play fetch with.
Well Marin I'm sure you'd like her to play fetch but look at all the tricks you've taught her so I think she's doing pretty well.
Mady fetches! We started in the house, with me sitting on the floor. I would throw a toy not too far away and if she brought it back to me I would hug her and fuss over her and praise her. I would gradually throw it farther and farther. Now, if we go to the dog park and I throw her frisbee or ball, she will fetch. Unless another dog wants to play. Then I have to go and fetch my own toy, with the other dog park people laughing at me...
Howie fetches, but he does not catch. I toss a soft ball at him, he ducks, it is kind of funny.
His FAVORITE toy to fetch is a houla hoop. We roll the hoop across the yard and Howie steps into and gets it on his back then runs to us and drops it. We call him "circus dog" and he wiggles his bum! One day soon I will post video of our circus dog.
My husband is trying to get Howie to jump through the hoop while he holds it in the air....no luck yet.

Marin, you have taught so many good tricks to Aska, I bet one day she will surprise you and fetch. I like how Kim taught Mady to retrieve a toy.

I would love to see a video of Hula Hoop Howie!
Ecco sort of fetches. She likes to chase her ball and play "soccer" with it. When I throw it, she runs after it. Once it stops, she uses her front paws to "kick" it. (Actually she puts her foot on top and swipes it away.) She'll do this for a bit, until the ball is "dead" in a corner or something where she can't get it to roll really well. Then she picks it up and brings it over to me to throw again.

If I refuse to play, which sometimes I do, since I work from home, Ecco will put the ball on the sofa and let it roll off. Not as much speed as when I throw it, but it's still good fun.

Oh, and she WILL NOT play fetch at the dog park. Too much other stuff going on. The ball and Mom are chopped liver at that point.
Yes, you R right !
She knows many other tricks :-)
One day she'll fetch for me :D !

And Kim: I've tried your trick, ( how you thought Mady to fetch) Aska grabs the toy and runs away !!

Aska doesn't either catch just ducks and then she tries to find it :)
I think that she doesn't see good. ?

I think your girl has a wonderful personality. Maybe she knows that you can chase her and she likes that game, whereas Mady takes a look at me and knows that I am too lazy to chase!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. She is a smart girl with a mind of her own, maybe she just likes other games more. I do know that if Mady doesn't see me throw it, she will never be able to find it, but other dogs in the park are so good at finding their toys in the grass. I think Mady would just rather chase a dog who has the toy than find it herself!
Simon loves to play fetch...now. He didn't used to like it and if I threw something he just looked at me like "you threw it, you get it". Then we went to him chasing it but not bringing it back, Keep away. If he did that I stopped playing or I would get a second toy and show it to him and he would come running back with the first and drop it and I would throw the second.

Simon is now four and he loves it and most times he brings the toy back so I can throw it again.
Dutch will play fetch and she likes to try and catch whatever is thrown, try being the operative word  ,
she will do it about 5 times then she has had enough and just leaves it and walk away

My OES is OBSESSED with fetching, we rescued her so we don't know for sure how this behavior started. She actually gets so excited that her legs shiver when we say the word ball. My vet said that all herding breeds should be encouraged to fetch because it's a great way to channell all of that herding instinct into exercise.

Really? Nola loves to run after the ball but doesn't understand that she has to pick it up and bring it back. She looks back at me all confused! I think this may be something to start working on! I'll have to enlist Sam and his retrieving skills! :P
It gets dark here in Ontario early now, around 5:15pm. So I went out and bought a 'glow in the dark ball' for Howie. I think it is more fun than he does, but at least we can find the ball in the dark and amongst the fallen leaves.

I think I retrieve the ball more than Howie...hmm wonder who has me trained?
