Izzie is prone to UTI/Bladder infections so we keep that area as clean as possible. I use clippers in the general lower abdomen area and such. Then scissors in little snips very close to THAT area. We wipe with baby wipes to get the stray cut hairs away. We also regularly use baby wipes to keep her clean and avoid issues. |
I bought a pair of scissors that are meant for hair cutting, but have a rounded tip. I feel better when I trim these sort of sensitive areas that i'm not going to accidentally stab either or the dogs if they move... which they will. |

We have to do this with our Mastiff girl. She doesn't have much hair down there to begin with, so scissors won't do the trick. What's needed is clippers, patience, and a VERY steady hand. |
This blade guide might help- http://www.andis.com/USA/sm_animal/pdf/ ... _chart.pdf I too use a clipper to trim the private areas. They recommend a #10 blade, I like a #7 too. If you shave a puppy-girl too close, she's going to be uncomfortable and likely licking/scooting for a couple of days. Yes, I've done it before. These are my favorite scissors for more delicate or close quarters trimming. They accidentally went through the wash last week. I was thinking the same! But is it OK to shampoo around they're private area ? |
Quote: But is it OK to shampoo around they're private area ? I sure hope so. I'm untrained and not a professional but I've been washing all the girls with shampoo "there" for almost 18 years. I like to dilute whatever shampoo I'm using so it still lathers up well but rinses easier too. If there's any brown stuff on the skin in the vulva area, I put the shampoo on a cotton washcloth, gently wipe the area and thoroughly rinse. If you use a hand held shower sprayer, use it on a gentle spray so #1 it won't hurt and #2 so you don't force water up there. If I'm doing it wrong I hope someone will let me know! |
Shave with clippers. I use either a #7 or#10. Whichever is on the clipper at the time. Trick is to get into all the nooks & crannies. That area gets washed with shampoo when bathing. After shaving I always sprinkle on some Gold Bond powder or baby powder wth aloe. |
We have the groomer do what they call a sanitary shave under the belly and around the private areas. If for some reason they can't do, then I let the Vet do it! I already had to take my male to the ER once when cutting out a matt I accidently cut his neck area and he needed 6 stitches. I also now only use the scissors with the blunt tip. Scissors get me nervous. One move from them and they can get cut. And, move they will... We also shave the butt - we call it the "poop shoot" And I wipe the vaginal area twice a day with an antibacterial baby wipe. Whoever said these dogs were high maintenace was an underestatement |
