I don't want anything with leeks or brussel sprouts even if you drowned it in one of my three favorites (cheese, butter, or sugar) I would love bourbon cranberry compote, honeyed carrots&orange, Cauliflower Gratin, and Green Beans with Bacon Vinaigrette though!!!! Mmm... I can't wait for thanksgiving but as I've mentioned in past years... I only eat a few things out of the 20 laid out for everyone!! I LIKE many other of the dishes, but I hate wasting space in my stomach for "just good" things when there are favorites!! Just give me green bean casserole, homemade rolls, and broccoli/rice/extra cheese casserole and I'm good!! Always made just for me too since everyone else really doesn't want it or will only take a spoonful! Turkey sucks. |
I love keeping it good but simple: LOVE turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, cranberries, bread...forget all the other stuff...then of course I like all desserts except anything with pumpkin or coconut or mincemeat. My mother always made rutabagas, pumpkin and mincemeat pie, a fruit salad with coconut...maybe that's why I like the basics! I always make whatever any others want and I'm always looking for something different. But I do look forward to the turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy! |
We're having Thanksgiving dinner in the dining room at Mom's retirement village. It's good but not the same as home cooking. I only want stuffing and gravy. And MAYBE a turkey wing or a slice (thinly sliced) of white meat. Covered in gravy. I bought a bag of stuffing so I can make my own. Unfortunately I won't have homemade gravy to go with it. |

I would just make a roux with butter (or fat of your choice) and flour and then add turkey broth or stock from the store. That sounds good...may be happening sooner than T-day at my house |
DH is a stuffing, turkey, gravy guy...turkey hash...oh, and cranberries, lots of cranberries. He'll eat it for 2 weeks after T-day if there's enough left overs. Of course I make plenty. Me, I'm curious about all. |
I gave up trying new dishes at Thanksgiving. My hubby and I have hosted it every year since 1994, and every time I made something new, no one would touch it. They want what they've always had.....turkey, gravy, stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, broccoli and cheese, spanakopita, salad, pumpkin pie, baklava, apple slices and my killer brownies. That's it. The first couple of years I tried to incorporate some of my traditional recipes, but I literally couldn't get anyone to try them. And since we have between 25 and 40 people for dinner, that was alot of food I ended up tossing! Maybe I'll try some of these recipes for just the hubby and I. Laurie and Oscar |
Turkey--like only my sister can roast Mashed potatoes Sweet Potatoes Gravy Dressing Orange Cranberry relish Corn from the garden Green Bean Cassorole Creamed onions and peas Homemade rolls Homemade cinnamon apple sauce Pumpkin Pie Apple Pie Pumpkin Roll Cheesecake Alka Seltzer |
Laurie, can't get Greeks to change, it's tough. The year my SIL served pumpkin mousse she had 99% left over. Tradition. |
I like traditional stuff. I hate when new things are brought and no one had time for the traditional!!! |
My youngest son has decided to be a vegetarian so I am looking for some good Thanksgiving entrees that are not heavy on the squash element. My usual Thanksgiving spread is something like this: Turkey roasted with rosemary butter under its skin. Home made noodles cooked with turkey broth and meat (my mother's big tradition)_ Mashed potatoes (husband hates mashed potatoes, kids love them so they get them at Thanksgiving) Gravy Wild rice stuffing (not in the turkey) with lots of mushrooms. Home made rolls (hubby's special contribution) Green beans Corn if I can get it (and often cannot), straight on the cob. Cranberry sauce (home made, with some pineapple) Green salad Fruit salad I have done roasted squash before but it's a minor hit and not a long standing tradition. Some of my crew won't touch it. Some kind of dessert medley. It depends on the year. Favorites include cherry pie (from our tree), lemon pound cake, brownies, sometimes chocolate mouse, depending on who insists on what. We usually eat later in the day so I usually have an assortment of cheeses and crackers, plus veggies and dips and fruit, in which case I sometimes skip the fruit salad. I had considered skipping the turkey and mashed potatoes in favor of lasagna (mine is always meatless) but that would cause an outright rebellion on the part of 3 of the kids. My hubby also hates turkey so he'd be fine with that as would my now vegetarian son. |
With regard to the Mincemeat Pie thing. Does anyone know how many Minces have to be killed for one pie? |
I worried about that until I tasted a piece...... .......it was just a more complicated version of "Dead Fly Pie." |
Our sides are pretty traditional - mashed potatoes/gravy, cranberries, veggies, some kind of sweet potato, dinner rolls, dressing, pies - for sure pumpkin and pecan. Plus other random things....but those are the givens! Our new venture this year is going to be turducken! Todd has been wanting to tackle this, and this is the year. We bought the turkey, he hunted the duck, and one of our chickens (an excess rooster) will finish it off. Should be interesting how this is received by all the 40-some Finches at the holiday meal |

It is a turkey on the outside, duck within that, chicken within that. The meats are deboned, so when you slice it, you get some of each of the 3 meats. Roast time is about 4 hrs. |
