Seeking Independence... =(

Lennon is 2 years old now, and he's started to seek more independence for himself. He's switched from Being a Velcro Dog to an Outside Dog, as he's started to prefer to spend time chilling and sleeping in the yard, looking at the park, barking at the kids or sleeping in his house than checking what Danita and I are doing, we have to chase him around the house for hugs and belly rubs, since he seems to prefer his business than spending time with us.

We feel sad because of his priorities shifting, but I understand that now that he's an adult he's trying to be more independent and has his own agenda... We can't keep him a pup forever!!! I still go out with him and let him run like crazy and play fetch with his balls and frisbee, he still loves to be petted, but he's not depending on us so much... I miss when he was more like Sofa, all velcro, but I feel proud that he's trying to be more independent now.

Wow.. now I'm talking like he was really my son (Well, he's my four legged, furry first born ) . I guess he's teaching us a very important lesson for the time when our human children arrive... Enjoy their childhood (or puppyhood!) and then, learn to let go.

Thanks for letting me rant on this... I hope I didn't sound too crazy!

Saul.

Poor Saul!!! Have you tried spending some "structured" time with him recently- working on obediance, or maybe try doing a little agility work? Sometimes these structured acitivities can help heighten your relationship- I'm not sure if it will make Lennon "snuggly" again, but at least you get to have a little "quality" time with him during these sessions!

Karen :)
That's sweet you want to have him close by...don't find to many people like that, they like having the more independent type.

Remy is almost 3 and I can finally go to the bathroom alone...
When he gets older he'll probably be back to velcro, mine have(just when I could take a bath by myself :D )
I hope he gets back to his velcro self soon. Jack will be turning 2 in just a few days, and I can't leave any room without a sheepie shadow from him and Annie. If CJ leaves the room and I don't.....they stay with me...I am MOST loved...LOL
It is just as hard with human kids too. When they are born they are fully dependent on you, and between then and the short 18 years you want them to be full functioning responsible adults, it sounds easy, but my heart breaks to see them growing and knowing that they will never be that little baby again. I am happy to say, and I am not just biased, but I have 2 of the best human kids and 2 of the best furry kids that a Mom could ask for. Plus a small brag, my son and daughter still are on the presidents honor roll at school and Ashlan made advanced reader and that is the highest you can go in 1st grade!! Joey is doing well writing his letters, he is in half day Pre-k.
They grow too fast and in a blink they change....
I am sure Lennon will come around in no time....keep telling him that Jack and Annabelle can't WAIT to meet him and Sofa and maybe that will perk him up....LOL

Stormi and co.
You know how kids push away from their parents - they can either be mean or just want their own space - then suddenly - after they left home... they suddenly realize... Wow... I wish mom were here...

Don't worry - he'll come around again. You'll see. After he is finished being rebelious he will probably snuggle with you and Sofa again. :D
Lennon's back!!!!

He started being the huge velcro mat he was before! He's looking for us for petting and belly rubs whenever he can, even tough he still likes to keep his personal space downstairs while Danita paints or I'm working. He likes to guard the front door and the stairs in his sleep... probably the herding instinct, since he controls the hallway from that position.

I'm really happy he's looking for us again and likes to hang around with us... It's like we have our dog back.
YIPEE!!!
Glad to hear he's back to his ole Velcro self :D
He realized what he was missing - Mommy and Daddy! Yay!
Chris
