'Scooping' the eyes

As some of you know, we had a battle with our former groomer about shaving Mady's nose. She had insisted that this prevents dogs from getting eye infections. One other thing that she would do was to, as she called it, 'scoop' around the eyes, cutting the hair very close, maybe a centimetre in length (a quarter of an inch for my neighbours to the south!). Our vet said that the nose shaving is not needed but that scooping around the eyes is good, to keep the hair from getting in her eyes. I have been peering at all of your photos and it doesn't seem like any of you who keep your dogs in long coat trim the hair right around the eyes.

Should we just be patient and have faith that it will grow out and thus be long enough to brush away from her eyes, or do you folks 'scoop' too?

Scooping???? Must be a canadian phrase..... :?: :?:

Whatever you may call it, NO we don't do that. We just let it grow :D

On a side note, it probably won't hurt anything, but I bet it looks kind of...interesting... if your dog has longer hair on the rest of it's face.
You have some odd obsessive groomers up there!

Good luck with this! :D
It must be an Ottawa groomer thing........my advice is just to let the hair grow.

One week until I see you guys....can't wait!
We often trim around the eyes; I'm never patient enough for it to grow out, and my girls always fuss with the top knots I attempt to put in. That being said... I am once again attempting to grow out their hair. I keep telling myself one more month, and it will be long enough to get all of it int he top knot. Fingers crossed.

In the above photo, you can see Luna's eyes, and the rest of her coat is fairly long. This is us trimming the bridge of her nose (the area between her eyes, but NOT the snout), and the hair that falls from the top of her head over her eyes. I use a thinning scissor; not a straight edged one. I don't like it to look like a ledge, but to be more natural looking.
No we don't do it here in Aus either.

I've got the opposite perspective here. The groomers here tend to say not to trim too close round their eyes because you'll trim the eyelashes. Have you noticed how long they are in sheepies. :hearts: The groomers I've talked to say its safer to leave their eyelashes as they help keep little insects and bits of grit out of their eyes.
Have you seen the length of the eye lashes? (untrimmed of course) Those help keep hair from the eyes.
We visited another groomer today, a 'high end' one. She mentioned shaving at least ten times. I give up on groomers. Anyone know where we can buy a good elevated bathtub?
We had a groomer years ago that did that, too, and she also called it scooping. I don't know why, but that term always grossed me out.
Jeez you are having a tough time, aren't you? My groomer specialized in Show Poodles and other very tough to groom dog varieties (that I cannot spell). I love her to death, and she does no trimming or shaving without my asking her to. Have you tried looking for a groomer that does show dogs in your area? I think they're more likely to want to do the breed the right way.... regardless of the breed.
We have pretty much tried them all now, or at least called them all. A million people live in the greater Ottawa/Gatineau region-I didn't think that it would be this tough. What pisses me off (makes me angry, in 'Canadian') is that we are willing to pay to have someone spend the time if there are mats. And there aren't ever many mats, David keeps her in good shape in that regard. It is the bathing that is killing us. But no groomer seems to ever want to bathe without shaving. Grrrr.

I think that we will just hit up Amber and Carl for more mentoring and keep on doing it ourselves and learn to do whatever trimming is necessary. With David's heart attack last month, I was trying to find a way to avoid him hoisting a 70 pound Mady into and out of the tub. Hmm, maybe this is a good time to hit David up for a bathroom makeover....
Are there any do-it-yourself dog washes in your area? That might be a good solution.
I bath Howie every few weeks. He is almost 7 months old now, 55lbs. I actually wash him in our old porcelain (human) bathtub, I climb into the tub at the same time  I was staying out of the tub and doing the shampooing but I quickly discovered that all my clothes were drenched!
I also found that my back was killing me.

We are ready to renovate that bathroom, so I am considering keeping our old tub putting in the basement and raising it up to a level where my back does not ache and I don't have to climb in with Howie!

I have yet to take Howie to a groomer. I have spoken to a few and they too want to shave him even though he has no mats (yet). I feel very fortunate that Howie's breeder has taken the time to teach me, I am actually going tomorrow for another lesson...I have so much to learn.

Kim & David it sounds as though you both are so dedicated to Mady's care, I bet she always looks great. Have fun visiting with Amber when she comes to Ottawa.

p.s. I love Ottawa, great city. Folks are so active there, very cool.
where i live i kinda have the opposite problem. people wait till their dogs are a matted mess and have to have a close shave or just not willing to put out $ to keep thier dog in a longer coat. wish i lived closer and could help you out. also i dont shave by my sheepies eyes i dont like the way it looks.

I might try the 'climb in the tub with the dog' method. I wish that we lived closer to Amber, but we WILL get to see her this weekend and she is going to go over a few things with us. We feel lucky, too, to have Carl close by-he has been a terrific mentor. I think that we just need to bite the bullet and spend some money on a raised tub. I can justify it in my head by saying that it would pay for itself in a year just on saving the professional grooming costs. Now if only I could somehow rationalize a huge soaker tub with whirlpool jets.
We've taught both dogs to jump in the tub on command.

When Simon was younger he was getting a paw and belly wash all the time. Just pointing to the tub and telling him to get in was a life (back) saver.

We do keep both our dogs in a shorter cut and we do cut around the eyes. I'm so much like my mom, can't stand hair in the eyes.
I'm spoiled; Tonks and Luna both would climb into the bath if I told them too. And we finally just got our raised dog bath installed. But while we were using the people bath for the dogs? Someone here on the board said that they would get undressed and wash the dogs while in the shower with them. I was NOT keen on this idea (no idea why not) but I was getting my clothes soaked and my back was killing me. So i tried it. And it was really fun, and sort of awesome. Wash the dogs, rinse the dogs, Put conditioner on the dogs, and while they are sitting with it on their coats, I'd wash MY hair! Pretty effective!

Only one bad thing. Now that the dogs have their own bath, they still try and sneak into my shower with me!!!!!
We have one of those old fashioned claw foot bathtubs, so it is too high for Mady to jump into. I can barely get into the damn thing. Now we are debating whether we should do anything at all before we meet up with Amber. Maybe we should just let her see Mady in all of her untrimmed glory and let her tell us where to focus.

Yes - just bring her clean and brushed out - and let Amber go to town! Make sure you take before and after pictures too
As Dawn said, bring her clean and brushed out. Be prepared - this is going to be me teaching you how to do the trimming and not just doing it all for you. I will do half the dog, then guide you while you do the rest :)

God help Mady then if you are going to let us at her with scissors! Have you forgotten the great 'trim a crater into her bottom' incident earlier this year? Not sure we can be trusted with sharp tools.

Carl called us this morning too, to offer help and to offer the use of his doggy spa. Are all dog people this kind hearted or is it just sheepie people? We are grateful and I know that Mady is grateful!
Yes, PLEASE take before and after pictures!! They are so much fun for the rest of us to see.

Bask in the glory of having Amber show you how to trim an Old English Sheepdog!! :D
I'm not kidding, this is a HUGE gift... to have a show breeder provide one-on-one
instructions on how to professionally trim an OES. Priceless! Many of us haven't
had such an opportunity.
Mark & I just arrived home from Howie's breeder. We had a wonderful visit and a great grooming session. Golly, we learned so much, and I definitely have SO much more to learn. Howie looks like I different dog, oh so shiny & fluffy. I hate the thought that we need to take him out to play tonight...can't we just stare at his beautiful coat until bedtime instead???

Kim, you bought a car for Mady, so what's a little raised doggytub, and a bubble/jet tub for yourself?

   That was me!!! I started out wearing my swimmers. But I must admit that I do go with the "I'll wash and condition my own hair too!" I don't have a bath, so I had a shower head on a hose installed and the shower is a double width so we both fit. I also have towels hanging up high over the glass shower screen now so I can grab them and throw them over Tiggy before she shakes so I can wear track suit pant with the legs rolled up and a top now and not get soaked. :D

You are so lucky (or is it unlucky, given the impromtu group showers) Alison that your girls like water. I have to coax Tiggy with her favorite biscuit and it often requires a bit of shove from behind to get her in the shower.

I just realized where you are in Ontario. You wouldn't want to help show me what I'm doing wrong with Ecco's grooming, would you? :clappurple: Once this atrocious haircut I just gave her grows out, of course. We're in Buffalo.
I sent you a few emails this summer in regards to how I built my own sheepie bathtub and was willing to help you build it and also sent you an address on a dogwash on Carling Ave. but you never replied.

I would be more then happy to help you with grooming! Buffalo is about a 30-40 minute drive from me. Let me know when you are ready and we can set up a time for you to come for a visit!
Instead of lifting her up entirely, can you coax her front paws in and boost her rear in? The same way you would put her feet up on the grooming table and boost her butt onto the table. It would be easier in the long run.

You may still get her to hop in the tub, you'd be amazed at how much air they can get from one good hop.
You might look into the Booster Bath. Mine came with ramps that store right in the tub when not using. Its lightweight and can hold my 110 pound OES with no problem. You can hook it into any regular hot water for warm water o0r hose outside when its warm. We paid about $179 for everything. That's US dollars.
any chance of having a grooming clinic and play date in Buffalo. Rochester is only an hour away and I can't seem to get the neck trimming down myself. I should post some pics of how out of control Bella's neck area is. There is no definition between shoulders and the head. Waaaaay wrong

I will look into this. So far everything that I have seen costs well over $1,000. Tonight David is going to Carl's to use his tub (and guidance) so that Mady can be pretty for Amber this weekend.
We spent a good 3 hours grooming her on the weekend, and another 2 last night and yet somehow she still has mats. She turns one soon, is this the 'transition'? How can mats form so quickly???

Oh yes...sadly.
One thing you may find helpful - get all the way through a matted area before you stop for the day. This will really slow down "growth" of those buggers. If you leave even a small area, I swear they grow exponentially from the bit that is left. :(

Chewie is all brushed out and sweet smelling - he got his whites done today and he looks and feels so amazing. We attended the halloween party hosted by The Paw where I teach class, so he had to look super perfect! Nice to enjoy it for even a short while!
And it lasts longer these days with a 4 year old...although he finally went through his last transition late this summer and fall...
Although he does need some ripping done to give him more of a neck, he hasn't been done since before nationals and he's getting shaggy
Wow, David just came back from Carl's and I don't even recognize Mady! I am sure that David will post some pictures. She feels different too, so so soft, and she is looking quite pleased with herself. A million thanks, Carl. It was wonderful to see Mady AND David come home looking so happy.
Im not sure if you have these in yuor area but we have mobile groomers here. They are usually in a small RV or big van and they will come to your home and park right outside your door and wash and groom your dog. That way you can stay and watch what they do and your dog wont be in a kennel most of the day waiting. Just an idea. :bulb:
I wish they had that kind of thing in Ottawa!
Mady's Mum, search it on the internet under booster bath. Lots of places sell it but for more money and then charge you extra for the ramps. I got ours right from the booster bath people. The ramps were included in the price...179 total with the shipping. It was about three years ago though...
