Sheepies and Cats

Gordy is two years old and we have had him since he was 4 months old. We have had our same cat in the house this whole time, yet when she moves he acts like this is the first time he has ever seen such a thing! Keep in mind that our cat does antagonize him so I partly blame her, but he will chase her and play with her any chance he gets! He is not like this with our other two dogs, obviously they play together but he is not obsessed by them like he is with our cat. Is this common?

I don't know if it's common but Tiggy is 2.5 years old and she is just as bad with my 3 year old cat.

The cat does tease Tiggy too. But just like Gordy, when the cat moves Tiggy must chase him. Tiggy is so so about our dalmatian, they play but not that often.

I have just taken Tiggy to her first herding class and she went great and loved it. Must be all the practise on the cat.
Gordy needs a herding job. If sheep aren't around, the cat will do.
My cats don't antagonize the dogs, but its the same here. The dogs are 3 and the cats; two of them are 18 and one is 13. One 18 year old can walk around and generally do okay. The other the dogs HAVE to chase her the minute she moves. And the 13 year old won't dare make any movement if the dogs are nearby, for fear of being chased. I must admit; one of my dogs is worse than the other, and gets her sister riled up too. If its just Luna and the cats? Its pretty okay. Tonks is the one that wants to initiate Cat Herding.
four months old is just coming into the terribles. So she's going to chase the cat for a while yet.

My suggestion: Don't permit it EVERY TIME it happens. We have a cat that goes ballistic and then pees all over the house if Chiquita goes anywhere near her. So we had to enforce very strict rules about the cats. One thing that did recently help and was purely by accident on my part. I started giving the cats a little wet food. I gave the cats their food first and then put chiquita's bowl on the floor. She's learned to sit and wait and backup for the cats because she's not allowed to crowd them for the food. It's taught her to back off of them. Glad I accidently stumbled into that solution!
Kenzie gets on very well with my three cats, but he can't understand why they wont tug his rope when he takes it over to them!
They like his bed too!

The only cats Summer sees tease her or rush across the garden, and she cant get them. The other day we bumped into one down the street. Tilly was looking across the road and didn't see it. Summer went up to it and it came up to her and they were almost nose to nose. Cat quite friendly, Summer wagging her tail thinking it was some small Yorkshire terrier. Suddenly Tilly turned round, saw the cat and barked "CATS" at top of her barking voice. Summer jumped cat shot off and then Summer realised and just looked really embarrassed. :clappurple: :clappurple:
