I don't consider the quick business walks to really be exercise. Today we were at the dog park for nearly 2 hours. David thinks that I overdid it with her, I disagree. She runs and plays hard, but she also takes breaks and just flops down on the grass at the park before getting a second wind. I don't want to overdo it with her. Is two hours at the dog park too much? |

How old is Mady now? |
Tonks and Luna got 2 hours at the dog park from when they were about 4 months old until they turned two. They'd probably STILL be getting it if we hadn't moved further away, I'd had surgery and been sick so much this year. Here's what I think; if they are still running and having fun, then where's the harm? They rest when they are tired, I make sure that they get water when they need it (and not too much at any one time). If they aren't playing anymore, then its time to go home. OR if I get too cold. Sometimes I can only last so long in the chilly winter months! |

What a fabulous photo! |
Bella has been doing some herding lessons and they have run for 1.5 hours with a 15 min break halfway through. We are in a small pen but she is going constantly. When I ski with her we go about 7 miles and that takes about an hour and a half. I think that you are okay since Mady is taking a break when needed and probably has built up a good endurance. I say go for it |
I do worry a bit with Mady She's still a puppy, and might not know when to stop. I also don't want to overwork her bones/muscles which are still growing. She just turned 11 months. |

Tonks doesn't know when to stop. Twice at the park her hind legs actually gave out on her. Like a big dummy, she kept trying to run with her front ones. Scary looking, but no harm done. I just couldn NOT get her to stop. Back when the girls were about the same age as Maddy, someone at our park brought a RC car that got top speed of about 35 or 40 miles and hour, and ALL the herding dogs were trying to catch it. Luna sensibly would take breaks but Tonks just kept after the thing. I don't know if she was as interested in the car as she was with running with the other dogs. But when her hind legs finally gave out, she tried to keep going for it with her front ones. Big dummy. I sat with her a moment, let her calm down and get her legs back under her, and I walked her slowly off the "race course" to sit and watch. I had to command her to Sit and Stay; she wanted to keep running! Afterward I called the vet to make sure she didn't need to be seen, and the vet said it happens and she probably just exhausted herself. The next morning she was fine. |
