Secretariat

Mom & I went to see Secretariat tonight. What a great movie! I remember watching all 3 of those races on TV back in 1973. Even knowing the outcome, I still got chills watching the races in the movie. A great movie about a wondeful family, outstanding trainer, jockey & groom & of course a spectacular horse.

I can't wait to see the movie--so glad to hear that you liked it! I guess 'age is showing' --we were at the Derby the year that he won. We were poor and starving so we had infield tickets that year--the upside was we were in the paddock area prior to the race--we were up close with him and took lots of pictures. I have never seen a more beautiful and powerful horse before or since! I wish I was organized and kept 'scrapbooks' but I am not. I am looking through our many boxes of pictures for the pics we took that day! Hope to see it this week!
I think it is a movie that to REALLY appreciate, you have to have been alive at the time & of an age to understand what was happening at that time & since. My older boy was 3 years old at the time & my younger boy wasn't even born yet. So to them, unless they were really interested in horses, it wouldn't have the same impact as for people our age. The underlying theme of having a goal, how to go about achieving it, the hard times between the start & the achievement of that goal..........that would probably come across more to people the age of my children. For us "oldies"...........well, we get the added pleasure of reliving having watched Secretariat win those races. What was really nice was watching a movie where there was NO foul language & no one got shot or beat up! :clappurple:
While not a movie person, I'm tempted to go see it. I remember watching him race - what a gorgeous horse!
Did they use real footage in the movie?
He died at 19 with 653 offspring......good boy! He indeed was a beautiful horse!! I remember that amazing Belmont race, why did the others even bother to show up??
Marilyn you inspired me and I could not wait--we saw the movie tonight and I loved it!! Dawn they did use some of the actual footage in the movie--it is a keeper! I could see it again. It is everything that Marilyn said and also I believe that if you appreciate and value animals you will 'catch' how unique he really was! What a smart and driven being he was--his connection with his owner was sweet and he was a true performer-with the heart of a champion! Although the reviews have not been great (what do they know anyway) it is an inspiring and sweet movie--definitely worth the money in my opinion!

When you look back on some of the really great movies, the ones that really appealed to me didn't get "rave reviews". I sometimes wonder how they make these decisions about movies. Probably on what the movie-going public is letting them know they are more interested in. Glad you enjoyed it so much Karen. I don't buy very many movies. But this is one I will buy so I can watch it again & again.
I can't wait to see this movie....

I agree whole heartedly, Marilyn!! We saw this movie Sunday night and enjoyed it so much. Knowing the outcome actually made it more enjoyable for me because I didn't have to worry "will he win?" or "will he get hurt?" while watching it - I could just relax and enjoy it. It was so exciting several times I nearly cheered "HUZZAH!!" out loud in the theater. Definitely worth the cost of admission. :D
Obviously I am a horse person (see avatar) and my horse's grandpa won the Kentucky Derby in 1975 (Foolish Pleasure). That said, I dislike all animal movies. Even if the ending is happy, something sad has happened before the happy ending. So I'm seeing this movie on Sunday, only because I know that nothing sad happens and there is happy ending.
I agree Paula, animal stories usually make me too sad. I have not seen this one but sure sounds like it's worth going.
