So I called my vet, they could get him in right away at 9:30. When weighed, he has lost 10 pounds. From 49 to 39#. On exam, organs felt normal, just a slightly enlarged prostate. Good pulse, no temp. Troy (vet) found a significant heart murmur - mitral valve. UA showed RBC's and WBC's. He has had normal BM's. 4DX - neg. Blood - elevated neutrophils; 7x's elevated total bilirubin, profile normal otherwise. CXR shows an enlarged, rounded heart. Abd xray shows enlarged spleen. He's probably in renal insufficiency - compensating by high fluid consumption. He also has a history of very crappy teeth - he has dentals virtually every year and is due. The thought is that he may have some oral infection which has lead to many of these problems...however taking him in for a dental right now isn't an option. There are a few sendout labs we are waiting on results. They are looking for kidney and liver issues. He got started on Enalapril for his heart, Clavamox for the elevated WBC's and possible oral infection, Metacam as an NSAID. I soaked his dog food, and he ate most of it this morning. After the pending results are back, the plan will be adjusted as needed. Hopefully nothing bad (or worse than we already know!) comes back. Even thought he's 11.5 years old, he has been a very healthy boy. I'm not ready for this to be it. |

Today was uneventful. No better (except he did eat some softened dog food!), or no worse. No lab updates on the sendouts, but Troy said Monday we would probably hear. So just need to continue on the course and hope no changes over the weekend and that we get some news on Monday. Thanks everyone Simon is totally a sweetie - he and Chewie vie for "favorite" status with each other every day...they both are mama's boys! |
Pooooor Simon!!!! HEAL! Poor Mommy, too. |

Oooh dawn so sorry to hear, he is just so precious. I think the worst part is waiting for the test results to come back to see what your dealing with, sending huge hugs for simon his expression on his face everytime I see a photo of him just melts my heart. Sending positive vibes you can get him better and up and eating well again. Always a worry with age but keeping everything crossed all will be well. |
Thanks everyone. Simon had another uneventful day.....and still waiting...what a LONG weekend! I'm almost glad I have Chewie in an agility trial this weekend, as I would be going nuts at home...hovering...staring at Simon... The trial is local, just 30 minutes from home. I had Travis stop in and check him and potty all the dogs at 11am, as Todd is in So Dakota this weekend (what timing ) He again ate his soaked food, and taking his meds (thank you Pill Pockets!). No side effects noted, so far, so good. I just hope the damage to his heart is something meds can manage, and that there is no damage to the kidneys and liver that are bad. I hate this waiting! |
Dawn just catching up on the Simon news. I sorry to hear he's not well. All the best with the results on Monday. That its all manageable. |
Oh Dawn, I would hate the waiting too. Poor Simon. I am anxious to hear the results. |
Hoping to hear something tomorrow regarding Simon. The waiting is so hard. |
Those beautiful brown eyes and that big nose... I always smile when I see his picture. It sounds like he's doing good for now. It's good news that he's eating. Anyone who's waited for test results knows the agony of it. Quote: I'm almost glad I have Chewie in an agility trial this weekend, as I would be going nuts at home...hovering...staring at Simon So many of us have been there. Hoping for news that the meds will keep him stable and happy. |
I just sat down and got caught up on Simon. We've had a pretty crazy weekend with Rudy. All our love to Simon. Here's hoping for good news, or if it has to be less than good, here's to something easily managed/corrected medically. I remember the stress of having a senior sheepie. You always worry. Fingers and paws crossed here for Simon. Get better soon sweetie! |
Dawn, I was at the dog park today and there was a bassett there. Everytime I saw him I thought of Simon. Fingers are crossed that he recovers, or, at the very least, it becomes a managable condition. |
I hope Simon is starting to feel better and Monday will bring some good test results. Those eyes are too much, he's a heartbreaker. |
Best wishes for good news tomorrow. Kathy ( Chauncey ) |
We are crossing our fingers for good news tomorrow. Lisa and Frankie |
Maggie has her paws crossed for Simon. What sweet face he has! Hugs to you as well! |
Hoping for good news today! |
Dawn, so sorry that Simon is not well. "We" all want him to get better so we will have more of this: Get better FAST Simon!!!! |
No news yet....... I'm at work, and no call. I am trying to be patient, as I know they'll call as soon as something comes in. I wonder what time their mail delivery is?? I had to get more pill pockets, as he loves them...so pill taking is a fun time. Everyone else gets a treat when it's his pill time. Simon just gets a pill in disguise when the others get a treat! This happens twice a day, with 2 pills at each "treat" time. Todd had to do it this morning, as I was at work too early. I got 2 flavors of Pill Pockets too - the beef and the duck...just for variety. Trying to make things as fun as we can.... Simon is still acting pretty normal.....and still thinner than heck. He got some spilled turnover last night And all the milk from my cereal this weekend...eating if I soak the food to soften it...so that is good news! |
Today is Columbus Day so you may not get any news today! How is he feeling today? Hopefully much better and sitting in his window enjoying his day! |

Keeping our fingers crossed for Simon. Laurie and Oscar |
How is Simon feeling today? You should be getting news from the Vet, right? I hope it is good news. . . |
Update - a small one Kris - one of the techs - called this morning to see how Simon was doing. I updated her on the weekend, as he pretty much acted OK, but he acted OK when I got all the bad heart and lab results too! So I assume he's no worse... And the urine culture they grew shows no growth - so that is good news. The sendouts - bile acids, creatinine and something else - are still pending. They will get faxed to our vet, and they weren't in yet. So still waiting.... After that comes in, we will adjust his treatment if needed and make plans. |
Well, some news is better than none. Thanks for the update. More to Simon. |
Aw, Poor Simon! We are all thinking good thoughts for him. |
I'm sorry to hear about Simon, Dawn (I'm just catching up in this part of the forum). Have you heard anything back yet? |
Hugs for Simon. |
Well, I got the test results back, and they are GOOD! The urine bile acids test came back at a decent level, so Simon does not have liver damage from his bad heart and whacked out other labs. He is eating if we soak the food, so that is no trouble and will keep doing that as needed. The plan is a recheck of blood and urine in 10-14 days. He is on a heart med, so will also evaluate his heart and plan his long term treatment. Then if all is stable, can schedule a dental for him, as he is getting due...Mr Bad Teeth (he has chronic teeth issues, and has had 3 dentals and numerous teeth pulled in 5 years.) He has had some benefit from the dental vaccination, with inhibits some of the usual bacterial culprits of dental disease. So, all your well wishes have apparently helped, and we can hopefully continue on a smooth road to recovery...or at least maintaining! Thank You All!!! |
So happy to hear that Simon is doing better!!!! |
Hooray for Simon!!! |
So happy to read your post! Yay Simon! |
YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Sending you a ((((((((BIG ELECTRONIC HUG)))))))))) from CA and hoping things turn out okay. |
So happy to hear the good news! |
That's great news, Dawn! We're all very happy for you, Simon! |
Great news about Simon!!!! |
Way to go Simon. That's great news! |
Happy to hear such good news.! |
Hey Dawn, so glad to see that Simon is feeling better! |
Good news for little big guy! |
Glad to hear he's doing better, such a sweetie in those pictures. |
Simon continues to do well...or at least he looks well! We have his checkup appointment tomorrow morning at 10:10. He will get a repeat UA and some lab work. He still is drinking and peeing large amouts, and the pee band is SOAKED (2 pads in it now) every morning. I suspect he is just peeing because he can't hold it..... I could start limiting his PM water, but if he drinking for medical reasons (to compensate for kidney issues), I don't want to withhold it. It's on my list to ask about tomorrow. |
Good luck at Simon's follow up appt. Keep us posted as to the news. |
Any news on how Simon did at the vet today? Thinking of you, buddy! |
Sorry for the delay...not related to Simon, thank goodness. His urine is cleared up - no more infection The urine also looks pretty decent for other labs as well. His heart is pretty much the same - same degree of mitral valve regurgitation. But - no CHF symptoms, so we are keeping with the same dose of enalapril. He still has a very large water intake, and frequent urination. Troy feels this is his body's way of compensating for some degree of renal insufficiency. (That is a stage better than being in renal failure.) So, we just let him keep drinking and make sure he gets out often to go to the bathroom....so probably a good thing Todd is unemployed and watching the grandkids... He gets to be on Simon potty patrol too We will continue with the enalapril for 2 more weeks, then reassess the situation. Oh - he gained 1 pound!! He is up from 39 to 40 pounds.....Way better than losing 10 - at least he stabilized and gained one back. |
Great news! Laurie and Oscar |
Good job Simon! So happy to hear the great news! |
Yes! And "Yay!" for the 1 pound gain too. Kiss that beautiful nose for me! |
Thanks for posting Simon's update. Glad its good news! |
Yea!! |
So glad Simon is on the mend |
So happy Simon is doing well! |
