Has anyone had their pups pee while sleeping? |
|
Tonks did. Often this kind of incontinence happens after a female is spayed. My Tonks had this problem BEFORE she was spayed. She would do it mostly while sleeping, and always after an exhausting day of playing or training. But it was fairly infrequent; maybe once every 3 or 4 months. We agreed it wasn't often enough to medicate for. Then about 6 months ago, at 2 and a half years old, Tonks began doing it every day, sometimes more than once a day. Our vet prescribed a medicine for incontinence, and its helped a lot. But the medicine and the dose she's on isn't necessarily right for puppies. Why not call your vet and have Chowder looked at? It could be something simply like a urinary tract infection, which would just need an antibiotic. |
Two things, Spay Incontinence where there is medication to help if she is spayed and leaking. Secondly regardless a vet appointment, see also before visiting the vet if you can also get a clean urine sample, so much easier at home, get a clean srew top jar, take her outside on a lead, as she squats get an old fry pan to collect a sample then pour it into a clean jar, have the vet test for a UTI to rule out any problems there. My tip either spay incontinence or if not she has a mild UTI (Urinary tract Infection) which if you go in with a sample, saves time and you have a result & wether she needs straight away a course of anti-biotics to clear it up. Also look at water consumption before bed, only 9 months old, if they have had a guzzle prior to bed time hard to hold all night especially in a deep sleep, so if the other two options are ruled out then think about water consumption before bed. Mine last drink at about 8 at night, out for a pee before bed an hour later then nothing till morning |
Changing but along the same liines of this subject Molly has had spay incontinence for a few years now, although I did not realize it actually had a name. She is on estrogen for this, DES, but now I am thinking is this the right treatment, although it certainly is working |
Chowder's urine was tested amd there was high counts of white blood cells. It's a sign of an infection but to be sure they are running a culture in it. I'll updat when I hear back. |
Did they ever give you a reason for her spay incontinence? Is she on daily medication? This is probably what Chowder has. Luckily the cultures came back negative. Right now we are measuring how much water she drinks before giving her meds. So far 8 cups in 14 hours. I don't know what the norm is, she is only 55lbs |
Her cultures came back and all was fine. It is the second sheepie we have had and both have had this same problem. One of lifes little surprises. |
Here is some information on Spaying and the higher risk to females if done young. More common in large breeds after spaying to get spay incontinence at a younger age. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTerm ... InDogs.pdf If her cultures came back all OK then you are looking at a long term incontinence problem with her. There is medication to controll this and with vet advice you should be able to get it under controll and wean back on the medication over the longer term period. It's just getting it under controll then over time working out the correct controlling dose to stop the leaks. |
The tough part is getting the dosage perfected with minimum leakage We seem to hve it down to once a week and things appear great. So nice to have a dry couch again |
