So today, while hubby was "napping" on the bed, I started ripping up the carpet...with no plan other than "get this smelly thing out of here." He eventually stopped arguing with me and finally joined me and we got up the carpet and BOTH layers of moogie underpad. I'm living with the plywood (happily) until I come up with what's next. We pulled up an area, moved the furniture over, and pulled some more. Then we took the nail strips out, and cleaned up the area. It looks like h@ll, but it already smells better. I'd like to air out the wood, wash it with TSP, give it another week or so to dry, and then move forward. What does this all have to do with Hudson? He refuses to walk on the wood floor now. (We have tile, laminate, and carpet in other rooms, and that's never been an issue for him.) He just doesn't like the change. So, he's sitting in the carpeted hallway, right at the threshold, staring at us, and whining LOUDLY. He's been doing it for nearly an hour. It's going to be a very long night. |

I've got some moogie hallway throw rugs. They just fit wall to wall so when a dog wants to throw up at night, they can't place it between the rugs and wall on the carpet underneath. Also when Glacier was having pee problems, I'm sure the rugs hid a lot. When DH had his hip replacement I had to remove the throw rugs. Oh the stink once they were hauled into an adjoining room. I've looked for replacements but don't want to spend $125+ a piece...I need 4. So when DH gained some walking confidence, back down went the moogie rugs......ah the smell. (yes I washed them in the mean time but it really didn't help. I'm glad they are back down, even tho they still stink. Glacier likes to "fluff her bed" at night, rake the carpet. I don't care if she destroys these shag things, but would rather not have her unravel the berber underneath. |
You really ought to give hardwood serious consideration. |
For Tracie, yes, hardwood for the bedroom. For me, it's tile. Doggie vomit does wonders to hardwood.......I have it in the diningroom and won't have it elsewhere. Brick in livingroom and withstands everything a dog will do to it. Up early this a.m. as I was awakened by the sound of a dog heaving onto the moogie rugs......why do they always find where the two rugs don't meet? |

So I went to bed last night with a whimpering dog outside the threshold to the bedroom, and woke up around midnight because I could no longer feel my legs. Hudson decided to join us. He was still there in the morning, and is currently on the bed, barking at passersby. Seems the storm of fear/anger has now passed, and he's fine with the floor. As an added bonus, I've always known Rudy's pretty active at night. Every time I wake up he's somewhere different from where he was when I fell asleep. Now without the carpet I can hear every single step. What fun. So all is right with Hudson's universe again. The world can now downgrade their alert status. Hudson wants everyone to now feel free to resume their normal activities, and thanks you all for your support. |
Tracie, makes me remember my first OES...He would NOT walk on a shiny surface tile...We had wall to wall carpet when we first brought him home...Shortly thereafter I got divorced and moved to a condo with shiny tile fllor except for the living room and bedrrom. He would NOT walk on the floor and stayed on the carpet with his head peeking out into the hall... I used to take him to work with me where there was shiny tiled floor everywhere except the Judges chambers which were carpeted. People used to comment on how well behaved my dog was as he would stand in the dorrway of the Judges carpeted chambers and just peek out into the all - and never did he move! Ha ha, they should have only known he wasn't so well behaved. he was just afraid of the floor! He grew out of it and got used to the tile. I would recommend a hardwood floor or a pergo type floor. Wipes up any messes easily and is great for people with allergies. The dog will be just fine in no time! |
Tracie, I had to check in to see what happened last night. I was imagining a sleepless night with a dog whining. I'm glad that Hudson got over his fear and join the family. One thing you can do before you redo the floor is to seal it beforehand with polyurethane or varnish. We did that to a few floors in this house. That way you don't have the ghost(of smells) coming back at the most unexpected times. |
