He didn't come into the bedroom last night to sleep. He woke me up around 2 AM when I heard him cry. He was standing up in the living room. I attempted to grab him behind his front legs to pivot him around and get him pointed in the direction of the bedroom. As soon as I put the slightest pressure on the right side, he yelped a bit. So I led him back to the bedroom, helped him on the bed and he laid down and went to sleep. This morning when we got up, I began manipulating his limbs. When I got to the right leg, he would cry when I moved it at the shoulder. I tried to massage it a bit but he cried if I put any pressure on it. When I fed him, he couldn't get his head down to his bowl. I had to hold the bowl up so he could eat (which he sucked down, btw). He went outside OK. A little slow going up & down the stairs but not bad overall. He's not really limping or anything. After that, he was just standing by the dining room table and not really crying, but just letting out a real quiet whimper every so often. I gave him 50mg of Rimidyl and got him back up on the bed so he could relax. I really don't want to take him to the ER vet today. It'll cost a fortune. If I have to, I'd rather take him to his vet tomorrow afternoon (after work) What do you all think? |

Tomorrow is fine. In mean time keep him quiet and ice the shoulder area. If you have a bag of frozen peas or corn, it makes a good ice pack. Do this for no more than 30 minutes.......Ice on, ice off so you don't frost bite the area. Rimadyl is good. Shoulder, neck......hard to say up there. |
As Susan says. ^ If he were mine and the pain is controlled, I don't think I'd head for the vet yet. I'd give him some downtime and see if it helps. Out only to potty, then back to lie down. Assist with eating as you're already doing. Hoping he'll be feeling better soon. |
The rimadyl must've kicked in because he's moving about the house quite effortlessly, including running up & down the stairs. I had to close the door to the stairwell because I don't want him exacerbating his injury. I really don't want to put him in his crate but I will if I have to. |
Keep him quiet, but if a crate isn't necessary, don't use it. Sounds like a guys day on the couch. Try to limit the stairs though (goooood luck with that!) |
Get him checked out after work. It could also be his neck referring pain to his shoulder. His difficulty putting his head down to his bowl made me wonder about that. |
Brick must be feeling better. He was much better by yesterday afternoon. No problem bending down to eat. No whimpering when manipulating his leg. I only gave him the one dose of Rimadyl yesterday morning and he never complained again. He was bouncing off the walls today when I got home. Moreso than usual. So I'm guessing he's feeling better. I wonder if he slept on it funny. |
Paige's condition used to drive the vet and me nuts. I remember one day, I called the vet and said, "We are coming." No appointment because we had tried several times before and nothing....damn stoic Great Pyrennes, wouldn't dare show pain to a stranger. So I had to lift her into the car, big girl Pyrenees couldn't lift a leg to help. The minute the car started her head popped up and she got her happy face, "We are going for a RIDE!" So much for pain. Glad Brick is feeling better. He may have a pinched nerve there somewhere that he can aggravate. I highly suggest neck/shoulder/leg massages and when on the neck, have him face you, head level with body and massage so you are lengthing the neck ever so slighly towards the head. When I discovered that it quickly gave Paige enough relief to where she could lay down and sleep. |
