Gilligan and Panda going to the vet today

Hi Everyone,

Apologies for not writing on here for some time. Busy as ever. Just to give everyone an update on Gilligan.

He's enjoying life to the fullest and now this is the weird thing. The dog whom I was most concerned about meeting Gilligan is the one that turned out to be his best buddy - that's Merlin! Who woulda thought? Perhaps Merlin who is the alpha dog in the house remembers his former best friend - his old pal Blue. Merlin knows he has to be gentle around an old guy.

Gilligan who has severe hip dysplasia never has trouble arising from naps but sometimes he pants heavily and occasionally I think the mass in his mouth appears to bother him. In the warmer weather he'd race to the outside tap and wait for me to turn it on and rinse out his mouth. I'm taking him to the vets today to see if he needs pain meds and have him assessed as I want him to be comfortable. He's still on Deramaxx, just like Panda is as well. Gotta luv ole dogs! I'll report back and let everyone know. (There still exist funds in his account at the vets in order to do this so thanks to everyone that helped this boy). Ray, who you know was helpful in setting up the account on this side recently sent me a story he wrote about Gilligan for BobTales which is coming up in next months issue. I'll share it with you guys in the members column in a few days.

Panda....tsk tsk. Formally at the bottom of the hierarchy in the household makes Gilligan nervous as he comes up close to his backside and if possible would probably try to hump him to show dominance. Panda, also has hip dyslasia and is unable to jump but nonetheless, makes Gilligan nervous so most days the combo is Gilligan and Merlin outside , then Snoop and Panda. Hmmph! Just goes to show you - you never know about interactions that will occur over time. However, despite that Panda and Gilligan get along great as long as Panda doesn't come up behind him.

Panda will be sedated today and his ears will be checked. Even after 6 years this still needs to be done.

So in aprox 1 hr Panda will be brought to the vet first, then I have an appointment later in the afternoon with Gilligan , then late afternoon I bring them both home at the same time. I'd better lift weights as I'll be lifting two 100 something pound dogs out of the vehicle. Good thing I practiced with bricks, wood and sod!

so glad to see all is going well //good luck today
Gilligan and Panda are both doing great. I, on the other hand had a no good terrible bad day.

I dropped Panda off this morning and return in the afternoon with Gilligan. Pulling in the parking lot I hear the sounds of an aggressive dog and look around but can't see where it is coming from. I walk around the lot and see the dog is in a crate in a car and feel fairly safe. Lifting Gilligan from my car and placing him down, the large dog leaps from a car as his smart owner decides that was the time to open the crate and the snarling dog charges us. I manage to block my body somewhat against Gilligan and the dog backs off. I race inside the vets office out of breath.

I'm also out of breath as just 1/2 previously I had realized I locked myself out of my home. In pure panic mode I managed to pull the workmans scaffold over to one side of my house and through sheer will power I manage to climb to the second story. I think it was the thought that Panda was at the vets and I'd be unable to pick him up and Gilligan was supposed to go too. Grabbing my car keys and deactivating my alarm system which was going off and cancelling the police...oh sheesh! Then the dog incident in the parking lot.

Waiting in the vets office I realize my pant legs are wet...and no I didn't pee my pants. I look closer and realize it's blood. I look over at Gilligan and see his mouth full of blood! I yell for the vet and it seems that when the dog rushed him- Gilligan in panic bit down (where the mass is and caused it to bleed).

While she's attending to Gilligan we hear the same dog causing a commotion in the waiting room. Suddenly everyone is yelling and the vet rushes out. This time the object of the tormentor was an old dog that had heart problems that caused him to seizure. The dog is in full seizure and everyone rushes over to help.Thankfully he appeared to be okay after some time. The problem dog is placed in his owners car and told to leave him there until the staff are ready for him and do a room clear.

Gilligan's assessment was good except he's lost a bit of weight which surprised me as I hadn't noticed the weight loss and feel like bad owner. It could be that he looked the same but he's hair is growing quickly giving the impression that the weight was the same. He eats well - 1 1/2 cups in the morning and the same in the evening. I was careful not to let him gain too much weight due to his hips. However, he now needs to put on weight. That will be no problem as he loves his food and has no trouble eating.

I am allowed to go into the back and take Panda and load both dogs in the car. No one can find Panda's collar and a search is done but after 15 mins I tell them I'll come back for it. I just want to take my boys home. Pulling in my driveway I realize in the confusion that Panda's missing collar is on Gilligan who is wearing two.

Both boys snuggle up against each other in the car although Panda is still semi-sedated and wobbles as I lift him out. He's completely shaved and his ears are good. So while the dogs are fine...I hope I don't experience another day like this one for some time. :|
That's a busy day! :phew:

Hope the blood comes out of your pants.
Marianne, do you ever have a normal day?

Or horrors, is this normal? You do make me tired whenever I read your posts.

I'm sorry you had such a yucky day but glad both Gilligan and Panda are doing well.
Wow what a drama of a day!!

I had to laugh though at Gilligan wearing two collars and Panda none.
I think the vet staff were a bit frazzled too.
As said above, do you ever have a normal day? I'm glad all are happy and sound. Yes, life with old dogs can be a challenge and $$$$. Now that they are back at Animal Fantasyland I'm sure everyone is relaxing.
blonde angel life, never dull. tomorrow will be better for you and the kidz. 8O
Thanks everyone for your comments!

It was quite the day! Panda is still snoozing and groggy from sedation but I'm sure he'll be fine by the morning. He's a bit out of sorts as I think he feels naked with his short shave but, I have no choice when it comes to his grooming style. He needed his ears flushed so I didn't want him sedated again in a few weeks for a shave so try to have as much done as possible while he's under. Even after six years he still stresses if he thinks anyone is going to do anything horrible to him but otherwise is the most lovable boy if one doesn't ever try to restrain him in any way.

It was adorable as both old boys leaned against each other on the drive home. Yup! Gotta luv old dogs!

As we were leaving...OMG!!!! a baby sheepie entered!!! I gave the woman my card with this site on it and hopes she visits us at OES. I hadn't seen a baby sheepie since I brought Merlin home! They are so adorable! Yet, nothing like the love of an old dog.

As for my life...I only share a small portion of it with you guys...in reality it's more hectic than what I often write about in here. I keep saying I must have been evil in my former life and making up for it in this lifetime!. Ha Ha!

I repeated my mantra several times on the way home....nope...no more puppies.
Wow what a day.....
So glad to hear that the boys are doing well.

Somehow I don't believe the no more puppies mantra. You just have too much love to share.

Love hearing about your experiences, of course I'm worn out the rest of the day.
