mats on the belly

how do you clear the mats which form around the groin area, my dog is in the river all the time so does get quite matted, but because this is obviously such an sensitive area i have not managed to deal with it. when he rolls on his back its not a pretty sight all these little black dreads

If you're talking about the groin area, you can just shave it. I keep my dogs shaved from the soft part of their bellies (below the rib cage) to the insides of the back legs.

It's a sensitive area and I think a lot of OES owners shave that area. It helps to keep them cool too. If you're talking on the ribs, you can demat, or just shave that area, too.
That's great Dawn! Poor Chewie  !

I shave the belly and arm pits. So much easier on both of us!
I also try and keep Tonks and Luna's groins and armpits shaved. I had them in for a professional grooming 2 weeks ago (I spend most of the year trying to groom them myself), and told her to just shave those areas, and not bother with de-matting them. When I picked the dogs up, she told me that they were matt free, and she didn't have to shave them! I think she missed the point that I wanted them shaved in those spots, so I could stop dematting them myself!
fantastic photo, i think i will have to sedate him to allow me to do that 8O

i might have to give in and get him seen by a professional, the rest of his coat is easy and he doesnt mind but underneath is a different story, armpits and groin, do you think they aree ticklish?
Could be ticklish - I know I am!
Chewie doesn't seem to be - he isn't thrilled, but he knows it's an expectation to let me do pretty much anything to him. Mom rules at our house!
I agree with the Shave It suggestion! If you can't do it - and I won't venture to that area myself either - the Vet can do it for you! My poor Vet...I make him clip nails, shave private areas and clean hair out of ears....No way am I attempting to shave hair that close to important parts 8O 8O
I DID IT :clappurple:

bought some clippers this morning and after a good run this afternoon cappi was quite chilled out. so with a tripe stick to distract him i managed (several times) to get him into position. the first one or two attempts were quite nervy, but i soon got the hang of it and now he is much tidier. i only took off the offending mats, didnt want to get too carried away.

thank you, somethings are so obvious when somebody tells you.
Great job :clappurple: ! I'm sure Cappi is much happier now too!
I bought a little laser light for Ryleigh to chase. She loves that thing. And after hours of her chasing this light she is so worn out I can do pretty much anything to her. Last night she just slept while I plucked the hair out of her ears and cut the hair between the pads on her feet. Best 5 bucks Ive spent. :clappurple: Makes grooming so much more relaxing for us both. :D
Well done Lesley :clappurple: :clappurple:

Cappi will feel much happier with the mats cut off .I always keep Marleys underneath shaved off as he is always getting little mats on his belly and groin area .
Wow! I'm jealous! I struggle with my male dog and its impossible to get him into that position!!! But I think I will try the tripe stick in one hand...That may just work
