Best puppy training treats?

Hi everyone! We're wondering what the best puppy treats are for a young sheepdog (10 weeks)... we want to start basic obedience but don't want to stuff her with the wrong food rewards. Thanks!

If your dog is obsessed with his/her own food like many dogs are... to me, the best treat would be his/her own dog food. Our dog loved it and never got tired of it. While we've also had 2 dogs that wanted something more. We would used wellness treats b/c they would never upset their tummies ...or veggies (baby carrots cut even smaller)! :)
I use training treats that you can purchase at Petsmart or Petco. It's bite-sized firm treats that come in a variety of flavors; bacon, lamb, beef, and chicken. They're small enough to keep in a pouch at your side and the puppy should be able to consume it without having to chew much. The scent is strong so it automatically gains my dogs interest.

My previous trainers would use a piece of string cheese and rip it into tiny bits, or use hot dogs.
Having gone through the Basic Obedience Training we found that Bailee woulf follow us anywhere, do whatever was asked of him for even the smallest morsel of CHEESE! Cheese must be his "comfort food!" Even now when I go through his commands just to keep him reminded we still use cheese. He absolutely loves it. Our Trainer suggested not using food he got every day, he wanted "Training Time" to be something special for him so cheese it was and still is.
Cheese, huh? If she's anything like her owner, that will definitely work. I would do anything for cheese. :D

Um... what kind? I've seen videos of trainers using string cheese... what kind did/do you use?

Thanks for all the advice!

This forum rocks. :)
Mady will do anything for cheese too. I use good old Canadian cheddar. I can get away with using very small pieces. Or even just grate some and use a bit of that, makes the block of cheese last longer.

My trainer used mozzarella string cheese. She would keep the string cheese half in the wrapper and would bite a tiny piece off and give it to the dog when it did the right command. I'm sure you could use whatever string cheese you like, though!
I always hear white cheese is better to give dogs than yellow. It was probably sodium but I don't remember ...just that people would always throw out warnings about yellow cheese on another dog board.

Isn't yellow or orange cheese just cheese that has had dye added? Kind of like how they put extra yellow dye in to make butter yellowier? I am curious about this now! I am an expert cheese eater (have to have something to go along with the copious amounts of wine I have been drinking lately) but don't know much about how it is made, other than that cows are involved. :cow:

Going to go and look at the sodium content of my cheddar vs. my mozzerella. Of course, if I go down to the kitchen, I might be forced to eat some, which might force me to open up a bottle of something. See what you did, Joahaeyo?!?!
I never really understood the reasoning but the show owners (this is a maltese boards) would go on and on about not giving yellow cheese if you have a choice to anyone who mentioned it. That if you were to sprinkle anything on your dog's food..should be white. That's all I know! ;)
We use either small slivers of good old American Cheese and we also cut off small snippits of string cheese. Remember, don't make the treats more than the size of a small bean. As long as Bailee knows he's getting cheese even such a small portion he is one happy Sheepie! As you train your pup use a piece of cheese for each single command and then after that is easy for her try to see how many commands you can go through in sequence for just the one piece. Bailee quickly learned "come, sit, down, stay" all on a single piece of cheese and a nice dose of praise.
For training, I've always used turkey hot dog slices or string cheese. The key is to pick really tasty, high value foods with a lot of scent since sometimes you aren't feeding it to them right away but you do want them to catch the scent when it's in your hand.

Our conformation instructor also gave me a loud lecture about picking foods that I'm not afraid to put in my own mouth.
i just read about dyes bothering some dogs, so the string cheese is probably best.
