Glasses and contacts

I've worn contacts for about 40 years. ( 8O ). Right now I wear soft contacts, but I have astigmatism which means I have to wear thicker contacts. I also need bifocals so I'm wearing one contact that corrects for near and one for far. And I have terrible allergies wich manifest themselves in my eyes.

But i HATE WEARING GLASSES. I see better with the glasses and they are more comfortable. But I hate wearing glasses. I think I'm a four eyes. Plus I'm a librarian so they only reinforce the librarian stereotype. I really need to get over this since I know physically I'm happier in glasses. But mentally can't get there yet.

Convince me that glasses aren't dorky.

They definitely aren't dorky. James has been wanting to get Lasik surgery and I've been begging him not to because I really like him in his glasses. There's so many cool frame styles that you can really get ones that not only look good, but kind of reflect your own personal style and personality. You could go totally anti-librarian with the frames!
I agree with Jill! There is this really swanky company called See that has the BEST frames! I had a former coworker who had frames that looked like butterfly wings, she had the lenses slightly blue tinged and they looked amazing!

I also have a pair of See glasses that I call my Henry Rollins glasses; thick black frames with studs on the sides.

I think lens crafters carries See frames if not, in downtown Chicago there is a See store.
OK get this. Glasses are cool again.

Proof:

I have three kids - 15 (next week, OMG), 12 and 6. My two oldest have been in glasses since they were each 6 and each sooooo desperately wanted contacts when they were 10 and 11. So I went out on a limb and got them contacts and they each wore them for about a year or year and a half.

Then, each started wearing their glasses more and more. I would ask - why aren't you wearing your contacts? "Oh I don't know...I just wanted to wear my glasses". And as each yearly appointment comes up they're given the choice - do you want glasses or contacts - and every year for the last three they've each chosen glasses. It was making me crazy because I am like you and hate hate hate wearing my glasses and as a kid I was never given the choice, I had to have glasses because my parents thought I was too young for contacts.

So here I think I'm being this awesome mom giving them contacts and now they don't want them. It finally dawned on me a year or so ago when I heard my middle one receiving a compliment from a friend on his cool glasses. There are SO many cool frames these days and they really are a fashion statement anymore. Their friends who wear glasses all have cool frames and they compare styles all the time.

So yep, build a bridge and get over it - glasses are in! 8) 8) 8)
I am so blind, killer astigmatism...and for the last year have bifocals as well. :(
I used to wear contacts, now just the glasses.
I don't love wearing glasses. They can be a pain, especially with all the outdoor activities I do.
BUT, I look way better in my glasses. I have been told that many times. I love fun glasses - the frames now are so interesting. And I see better with glasses too - I can't imagine juggling the bifocal part now as well if I had contacts.
this will sound indulgent, but I think its a mistake to get a pair of glasses.

Get FOUR pairs. This is something you'll wear everyday; so why not get different looks or colors to go with different moods or outfits? Treat them as an accessory, and not a necessity. A friend of mine is a lifetime glasses wearer, and she always has the most amazing pairs. She has bunches! I have one pair right now, but I'm eyeing up a second.

Wow! I guess I'm not the only one with these problems! I started wearing glasses in the 4th grade and I was never in the dorky crowd despite me thinking I was a dork. I tried for YEARS starting in the 7th grade to wear soft contact lenses. My eye doctor has always been so patient with me. I tried every stinkin' material and size known out there and finally gave up and just wore them when trying to pick up guys at the bars. Thinking back though I couldn't have been very sexy scratching my eyes and putting drops in all the time. The last time I wore contacts was on my wedding day in 2002. I can't believe my eye doctor (the same one) asks me every year if I want to try some contacts. NOPE! I gave up on how uncomfortable I felt. So, several years back I invested in the Silhouette no-frame glasses and really like them

Recently, a friend of mine took photographs for Evan's 1 year and took pictures of me and Steve. I took my glasses off and said, "Wow, you can really see my dark circles under my eyes without my glasses!" Put those glasses back on!

I'm sure you look cute in your glasses! Get yourself the thinnest lenses they can possibly make for you and nice glasses. I'm all for the rimless ones :)
I am like Paula regarding contacts, hate glasses, wear the mono vision and really prefer the contacts.

I've tried the rimless glasses but the material they make them with distorts my vision so have to have plastic lenses with all around frames.

Suppose if I could afford more than one pair it would be different but having bi-focal lenses, no line etc gets rather costly so wear my old glasses when I'm not wearing contacts and for now that works.

Of course, now that I'm really getting old I suppose my contact days are numbered but think I'll stick with them as long as I can.
Wear which ever you are most comfortable with :P
I too am a librarian...retired librarian!!! I now wear nothing but glasses...spent alot for them and love them and will never go back. I guess I've reached the age of not worrying what I look like or what others think...comfort is the name of the game. I wish I could afford 4 different pairs but with my prescription this pair cost 800.00...I did get the frameless ones and love them...they are so light you forget you are wearing them. I guess I have decided to try and age gracefully...I want to look nice just don't worry about it like I used to...that's why I've gained 30 lbs. and need to get motivated to loose it! Retirement is wonderful but you don't have to worry about your working wardrobe fitting and it's so much easier to put on a pair of jeans and t-shirt for the day! I think I saved money retiring...car, clothes, taxes etc...
I like my husband in the. You just have to get the right pair, and then you'll feel "better" about it!! I hope! :)
I wore contacts for 35 years and was at that time dead set against getting glasses. But I, too, had the whole astigmatism and bifocal thing going on, so my contacts were always getting too dry and I had to have a pair of reading glasses in just about every room as well as at work!

So finally, I grudgingly went to glasses and I'm so glad I did! My eyes are so much more comfortable, they DO hide the bags when I've not gotten enough sleep! I did pop for two pair, one of the really light weight frameless pair that I use mostly when I'm out working in the yard or doing sheepie activities. They practically feel like I'm not wearing them and never fall off or slip down my nose, which I hate! Then I got a more "fun" pair. Yes, they were expensive, my prescription runs the $800.00 range as well. But since I really don't spend money on anything but my dogs, I decided it was OK to treat myself, lol. My friends tell me I look better in glasses than contacts!
I had my original contacts for 15 years, until I lost one at the pool. Yes, the same pair for 15 years.
Then I got gas perms and finally was part of the study for colored gas perms.
I have an astigmatism that limits me to the gas perms. and not I have no line bifocal gas perms.

My glasses, even in the thinner lenses, are like coke bottles. I hate them, even though they are more comfortable. When I put in my allergy eye drops, I have to wait an hour to where my contacts.
let's not forget the sexiness of librarian removing glasses and letting her hair down.
There's an advert for glasses here in Aus at the moment that says a huge (sorry forget the number) percentage of people voted people wearing glasses as smarter. 8O It made me tempted to go out and get myself a pair even though I dont need them - yet!

There are sooo many different cool and gorgeous frames out there now that I agree with Alison get yourself as many different pairs as you can afford and then match them to your clothes and or mood.

Also if your house is anything like mine multiple pairs is a good idea. Wayne is constantly losing his and for a while there glasses were a staple in Tiggy's diet. Fortunately she seems to have gotten over her taste for spectacles.

I seem to be the glasses frame guru amongst my friends. I go with Wayne and two good friends to help chose frames that suit their faces and personalities. My hint is put lots of pairs on and off quickly and keep the ones aside that look ok. Then try the ones you thought looked good to choose the pair/s that look best on you.
Glasses are a fashion statement now. Last week I was in getting new glasses (I too had to leave contacts due to allergies and aging eyes) and over heard a lady shopping for frames and demanding that she would only accept the most fashionable frames. I wondered if she was doing that without considering her own appearance!

I agree, you do usually see better in contacts, but for me they became a safety hazard as the lens would swell at most difficult times......like driving. (OK I was wearing them while swimming and a bit of water got into them) Also due to high UV light here I have developed growths on my cornea (not cataracts) and the lens weren't as comfortable. Add seasonal allergies and it was all I could do to keep my hands away from my eyes. Finally I enjoy not dealing with all the cleaning, sterilizing, eye drops, etc of contacts.
Glasses are kewl unless you're like Urkel to begin with.

I don't think these glasses look dorky, do you?

I don't think that These look dorky either.

But then again.... Check these out. (OK, maybe not dorky, per-se.)

I think it all depends on the attitude behind the lenses.
