Barbara Lamb, a very good friend for many years, and President of OESCA has made and sold Dog boots, and raincoats for a long long time! I am now on dog #3 for a raincoat i had made many years ago! Boots too........... http://www.shaggylamb.com .Ali i think that's correct... you can do a google for shaggylamb Old English Sheepdogs and it's on her webpage |
Good timing on this post! I have been pondering the dog boots thing lately. It gets quite cold here in Ottawa, lots of snow, but what makes me want to get boots is the salt they put on the sidewalks. I know they want to keep the sidewalks free of ice, but what they do here is, in my completely uneducated opinion, overkill. Do most of you who live in northern climates use boots for your sheepies? |

I don't, because I don't live in town. No salt, no issue. I do use shorter ones for sledding if needed, but not very often. I do have some tall boots too - from conformation time when we needed to keep those fluffy footies clean and dry before ring time. These are the ones we have - http://brightybooties.com/aboutus.htm |
I've been using these with great success: http://www.medivetproducts.com/owners/productdesc.html They are easy to put on and they stay on. Best of all, they keep feet dry even after multiple days of rain. |
What are you going to be using them for? Just for in and out of the house to stay dry or for serious long walks and tough play? |
Mine came from Europe, tough, durable and Trendy. They are waterproof and snow proof and come in all sorts of options in colour and design. I love them, had another pair that the sheepies would split them with toe nails. I have a few sets now for 3 doggies, latest is Polka dots both in Pink and Blue, yep going dotty over stylish, durable fur kids booties. We have had after 12 years of drought heaps of rain so the sets have come in handy especially when you have two sheepies in the house with Oooooh whats this wet icky stuff on the ground and another who could not care less if it is wet outside or not. Main thing is Durability and toughness as some are not and they do split after a very short space of time having them on. They are handy if really wet, muddy or snow just so you can take them out to potty etc or even a walk without a major clean up and drying of the feet after to bring them back inside. Make sure sizing is right in whatever you end up getting, if not then they slip off or dont fit. Most sites that sell booties have a guide to measuring for correct fit. Going Dotty is Syd. Variaties of the booties we have a real collection that are well used here for 3 sheepies from Europe. As well as Syds Blue Polka dots add to that as well Babettes Hot pink Polkas as well as what we have for momma and the kids below All well used and great. |
This may be a very stupid question but... how well do they stay on? In the winter, I really fight with mats and snow on Asterisk and Wendel (now Levi, too) legs. I think Wendel would be fine with boots, but I'm concerned about Asterisk wanting to yank them off. We go on walks and to the dog park (when it's not -14 degrees, bbrrrr!). I think it would really be helpful. What are the things to look for when purchasing dog boots? Certain material? Length? |

Yes they stay on if the elastic does up tight enough. Tiggy doesnt try to take hers off but you might burst something you'll laugh so hard when they first try walking in them. I so wished I had the video camera. Tiggy was goose stepping around the house, it was hysterical. |

You really have to take the time to make sure they're fastened nice and tight, though, otherwise, one always does manage to slip off if you slack! |
