Advice for virginia couple trying to rescue (will travel!)

My wife, Lindsay, and I are looking to adopt a female Old English Sheepdog to become our family pet. We have a lot of love to provide our dog. Our ideal OES is between 2 to 4 years old, a bit on the smaller side who gets along with children. We do not have currently have kids, but are planning to within the next few years. We would like our future OES got along with other dogs. My parents live nearby and have an OES, Byron, who likes to visit and LOVES to play with other dogs.

We would appreciate advice on how best to connect with rescuers. We want to wait for the right gal for us, but want to make sure we are doing everything we can to make that happen! We've submitted applications, but haven't heard anything--should we be more persistent?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would recommend being a little more forward than just filling out an application. Before I adopted Bella (about 2 at the time) I actually called and e-mailed the rescue person directly. She responded to both and we actually talked on the phone so that she could answer all my questions in more detail. She actually contacted me directly about a week later to tell me about Bella. I had Bella in my hands 2 days later and it has been great. I am not sure who covers VA but Madeline from NEOESR works in western NY. If you are not getting a responce in VA you might want to give Madeline a call since I do know that transportation is done for a lot of rescues.
One other thing is that it is always hard to tell if the person doing the rescues is in town or they might be out doing transport, evaluations, etc. That is why a call might be more effective. I'm not sure how things go between filling out the forms and that info getting onto the people who make the matches. I guess I kinda cut out the middleman with the direct call and email. I actually did the forms after the fact. They already had my life story and situation in the emails.

I didn't want to imply anything about any rescue in VA, but they might be very busy saving dogs and evaluating them that they can't get right back to you.
