Hayfever Ick!!!

Oh my, I so hate hayfever!

I am so snuffly already it is just not funny. The news was saying today that it is only 3 weeks till hayfever season and its predicted to be a bad one this year as we have had good spring rain for the first time in 13 or more years. 8O

Well if its still 3 weeks away then I am in BIG trouble!!!!! I'm already living on antihistamines and pseudoephedrine so that I can breath and not sound like I have a peg on my nose. Actually I kinda sound like I have a peg on my nose anyway. (Val, if you think I write with an accent you should hear me right now, you'd die laughing, we should skype sometime).

How am I going to survive when the hayfever season really gets here?

I think I'm going to go and have a glass or two of wine that'll really snuffle me up but too bad.

oh..mim....sooo sorry!!!! Dino is having the same problems...poor boy sneezes 3~4 times in a row..red watery eyes...stuffy nose...yeckckck....hope it doesn't last too long.....
don't know how you feel about cortisone, but after years of suffering bigtime. dad would continue to make me wait on customers while sneezing my head off even with benadryl.
i found a doctor who gave me one shot of cortisone for the season and wallah!!!!!!!
even better is that after 6 to 8 yrs of one shot per season, i no longer suffer from it. :rimshot:
oh no... that's terrible :( I'm sorry you're feeling miserable!!! I hope you get better soon!!
You have my sympathies. I don't have hayfever myself (knock wood) but I have watched others suffer with it. I don't know why, but I thought that Australians would be safe from such a curse, with the climate you have, but I guess there is no escaping it for some. Drinking wine might not cure it, but it might make you forget that you have it!
For the first time I'm suffering. Actually my own fault. With DH laid up, I haven't kept up with the mowing......the back acre has gone to seed, literally. I'll spare you the description, it's awful. As a result, I'm plugged and gooey. Eye app't Wednesday ought to be interesting.
I know your pain! I have a serious allergy to ragweed here in the States, and autumn is simply miserable. My miracle drug? Rhinocort nasal spray. One squirt in each nostril once a day, and I don't even need to take an antihistamine.

During one particularly horrible year about ten years ago, I finally saw an allergist who prescribed the nasal spray. The first year I used it, I still needed the anthistamines, as the inflammation was pretty severe. My allergist told me that the trick to avoiding symptoms was to start the nasal spray a few weeks before the season begins. I've done it every year since and it works like a charm. Up until then, we could never have the windows open in the fall. Right now, ragweed pollen is very high in my area, and I am sitting here with all of the windows open. WOOHOO! (Sometimes, it's the little things....)

Laurie and Oscar
Thanks all for your advice and sympathy.

I will have to get a referral to an allergist as I get worse every year and currently I can hardly smell or taste. This is a bad thing as it makes me eat more sugary food because I can taste sweet.

The rhinocort didnt help much so I'll have to see if there's something else worth trying.
Also knocking on wood.... :D

No allergies for me, but Todd developed them for the 1st time this past spring. He was so funny, he kept swearing he had a cold... that no one else ever got!
He had good luck with Zyrtec, thank goodness.

Hope you get some relief - soon!!!
I've had allergies since birth. I always laugh about what a lousy Cherokee I am - wouldn't have made it on the Plains.

I've tried everything over the years. Allergy shots, nasal sprays, pills, liquids - there isn't anything that I haven't tried. 99.9% might as well be water for all the good it does me. I did discover that high dose Advil (prescribed for a rotator cuff injury) helped my sinuses.
What does work for me it the saline nasal rinses, twice a day. It's gross to discuss, and do, but it works. I tend to get sinus headaches that mimic migraines (nausea, pain, light and smell sensitivity), relieved by heavy doses of pain meds and sleeping in a dark room.
When I use the rinse, I don't need anything else.
Neti pots.......I'm too chicken to try them.

Went out to do battle with some weeds, came inside shaking from breathing problems. Antihis and it settled down a bit. Weed patrol is not in my game plan any more.
Mmmm thanks for reminding me about nasal rinses, I tried them a few years ago and they didnt help but I havent tried lately so you never know.

My doctor has told me she thinks I have nasal polyps. 8O They need to be surgically removed if that is the case and apparently its not all that pleasant.

Oh well looks like I'll be seeing an ear, nose and throat specialist first. Problem is it takes forever to get an appointment.
I've heard the same about the surgery. I know 2 people who've had it done, and it's kind of miserable. (1 a fellow nurse).
I bought a neti pot kit, and have had no sinus issues since I bought it!!! It is still setting unopened in my bathroom closet.....knock on wood for sure!
Wow! Just purchasing one eliminates the problems! Cool 8)
FYI, the nasal polyps will return if you remove/treat the underlying cause.

I actually use the Ayr system, which is a squirt bottle. Do it in the shower - it seems less gross to me there.
My son had the surgery, really didn't make a lot of difference so now he uses a netty and has more luck with that.
Snoof Snoof time for the wine to dull the senses  See you soon 8) Will have a box of tissues on hand when you come on over :D

Actually nothing worse then hayfever and the season is not in its peak yet 8O You and I can be miserable together over a few glasses  I am suffering with it at the moment too but not as bad as you
Well I went to the drug store today (see Val I DO NOT have an accent, shhh they're called pharmacies in down under land) and left with rhinocort, nasal rinse (a kind of medicalised version of the neti pot, with a squirt bottle and little sachets of saline solution with baking soda added as its meant to soothe), more antihistamines and more decongestants. Surely something will work, it just about broke the bank. :cow:

All else failing I'm going to Lisa's to drown my sorrows.
My allergies are just starting to pick up. I got tested last year. I was worried I was allergic to Frankie.
But I wasn't. It's a long list. Dust and dust mites, mold, seasonal mold, grass, early trees and late trees, and the worst one cats. I have found the neti pot, allegra, and rhinocort to work for me. I swear I sneezed 50 times at work yesterday. It's been very windy here and that just makes it worse.

Hope your feeling better soon. I'll try your wine remedy

Lisa and Frankie
I think I must have sneezed that many times at work today too. 8O

Be warned the wine made me MORE snuffley but it also made me care less.
Have you tried taking a steady dose of ibuprofen during the worst times? The anti inflammotory properties do help reduce the sinus swelling and give many a bit of relief. Help getting things unstuffed.
