bad leash behavoir

most of you know that panda brian and i moved into a high rise condo. there is a dog run down by the pool...

we use the run right before bed and during the middle of the day...there are other dogs in the building....

panda somewhere along the line has become leash aggressive..lunging at other dogs that want to sniff and play. this is TOTALLY unexceptable. she took a chunk of hair out of poor prissy the wheaton...

i have NOT tested her off of leash as of yet...i dont want it to be even worse...although i ''think'' she would be better off leash....

i MUST get her to calm down and be able to be in the run and elevators with other dogs....

does anyone have any good advice??

have you tryed a gentle leader it helps them from pulling hard and keeps them close to you.. sorry you are having this problem ..
Darcy are the other dogs off leash when she lunges?

There is something about one dog being on leash and another being off. That is why the dog park's have the little enclosure for leash removal before you get into the dog park.

If that is the case, can you remove her leash just before you go into the run?
i do let her off leash in the run...but only with no other dogs in there....prissy was on leash too..

the dogs must remain on leash inside the building and elevators...

I think I would snap at a dog named Prissy too.

Seriously, it may just be because she is getting older and crankier. I am no expert, but I would correct her for that behavior and see if that doesn't curb it since you are teaching her "that is not acceptable". It might mean a few dogs get snapped at but at least now your prepared and are ready to correct her. We had this problem with Mopsy as she got older and teaching her not to do it seemed to work. My dogs know the word "gentle" and "nice". With Harry it is because I am worried he is going to pounce on a puppy to play. So as we approach I say "gentle" and it actually works.

Good luck.
Is it possible to enlist the help of some other dog owners? Using treats as the other dog appoaches etc. Some dogs find it difficult to be restrained by a leash when they're appoaching another dog.

Patricia McConnell has a good book on how to help leash aggresive dogs. It has lots of practical advice on helping dogs overcome their reactions to other dogs while they're on leash.

This web site gives some basic info.
