Levi likes to chew the oddest, most uncomfortable (at least that's what I think) objects. Levi has chewed an empty pop can, the back of the remote control, the Marx brothers collectible dvd case, he removed the batteries from the remote (thank GOD he didn't eat them, he just spat them on the floor), with Wendel's help he ate quite a few Kleenex after shredding the box, and mail. Levi isn't teething, all of his adult teeth are in. But I think he never had guidance in his 9 month life of what is appropriate to chew and what isn't. Does anyone have some ideas of how to curb this behavior? I plan on using replacement (taking away the inappropriate item and offering a plushie instead), but are there other methods that you can think of to try in case this method doesn't work? |

Get some big nylabones...stuffies are too soft...mine want something hard to chew on and it sounds like Levi is picking harder type objects. |
We went through a similar issue with Maggie the bluetick. She was a bit over 1 year when we got her, who suddenly discovered the joys of being a house dog meant toys...then non toys too. Nothing like a "puppy" with jaws of steel! We have the best luck with house proofing and being neat. OK, sort of neat!!! If it's not laying where she could get it, it stayed safe. We tend to not get too out of the habit, with fosters (and grandkids!) here almost all the time. Remotes, etc are always put up, cans crushed and put in a covered storage as soon as empty, shoes we want safe put in our room (always a gated, dog free zone - for safety reasons mainly, so we have one area in the house that stuff can just be stuff!). It was a habit we got into with our 1st dog, and we've maintained it for the last 27 years. I did have a library book I had to replace when Biscuit got it, but USUALLY we do pretty well. Tough chewers do need tougher items. If he's picking plastic or metal, maybe add in some harder surface toys. I have a huge variety, based on the mix of dogs, but also the mood of the dogs too. Even the toughies like a good stuffie shred fest!! |

What other hard type chew toys do you recommend? I'd like to get a few different types so that if he gets bored with one, I can give him an alternative. |
Kenley and Marley have different shaped nylabones,Hard plastic dumbell,a rope with hard plastic bits on and a few hard rubber toys to chew on. |
Some of the more popular chew hard items at our house are: The hard white shank bones; either hollow and plain, or stuffed. Chewie, Maggie and Biscuit the lab all love them. Hard rubber - balls with or without a rope attached, any of the Kong products - either stuffable or not. Nylabones - Chewie chews nylabones a lot. When we were showing and they were off limits (the chewed, burred edges rip out leg coat on the front legs) he was in serious withdrawal. He likes the regular bones shapes, in all the flavors. Now he has a big one, with knots on the ends. He's had that one for the past year and works on it daily. Maggie and Biscuit also like them. Those are the staples we have all the time. |
Hank can chew through almost anything- Kongs, "indestructable toys", and all hard rubber... not to mention shoes, furniture legs, and footboards. I could go on and on... We tried a nylabone and he loves it!!! Hi favorite is one that has a pokey rubber band around the middle that spins, with nylabone ends... so far it has survived for a week! Thats the longest yet! |

Have you tried the harder rubber Kongs? I believe they are the black ones. Supposed to be tougher than the red. Mine all chew the fake Kongs, they are not as tough as the brand name. Nylabones do well here too. For those having trouble getting you dogs to chew them, there are different strengths and thicknesses. Getting a smaller (supervised) and softer one can help get them to chew them. Then you can move up to the tougher ones and still have them like them. |
Success! Well...sorta. I bought three different nylabones yesterday. One was the large red bone, one was a wacky puzzle shaped white bone, and then I got a 'beef' scented one. Of course, the one that all three wanted was the beef one. Asterisk grabbed it, Levi took it away, Levi got up and Wendel ended up with it. Towards the end of the night, Asterisk and Wendel had the chews and Levi fell asleep. I guess I'll have to get more scented chews, but to be honest, I think they'd still want the ONE chew that the other had! |
^^^^ of course! ^^^^^ Same thing here. Maggie is the Queen B - she steals them from Chewie all the time. She likes them too, but she does the stealing just because she can.....poor boy And now she does it to Biscuit as well.... |
We have two identical nylabones and yes, Maggie whins at Rosie, gets her attention and then steals the nylabone Rosie is chewing...luckily Rosie doesn't mind and just gets the other one. |
IF you find that Levi can still destroy the Nylabones (Rudy can, and fast) they also make a Nylabone ring. Since there are no edges, they don't break. Rudy has a dozen or so around the house, and when he needs a chew (and we can tell by his body language) one of us just hands him a ring (or he gets it himself) and he chews like his life depends on it. Then, he falls asleep right there, ring still sitting on his foot. Just an option if you find Levi's a super strong chewer. Rudy destroyed a bone shaped Nylabone, and has ripped the black heavy duty Kongs to smithereens. |
We have hard bones, rubber toys, soft toys, ropes...but my now 8month old puppy Ryleigh seems to prefer rugs. We have mainly wood floors with throw rugs, my 2 labs have never messed with them but Ryleigh likes to "dig" them and chew them. Then today I came home to find she got ahold of my sons pencil bag. I called the vet and she said to just keep an eye on her and see if she has problems going to the bathroom. I guess I will have to start putting her in a kennel when we leave. |
