Adhesive remover for carpeted stairs?

I know there are quite a few do-it-yourself-ers on the board, so I thought this would be a good place to start.

This weekend, I was going to rip the carpet out of my basement. WHY there is carpet in a Midwestern basement on the Mississippi River which is prone to flooding; I have no idea. It should be pretty quick work. The carpet is cheap and appears to simply be laying on the cement floor with adhesive only at the seams. A box cutter and some cord should make cutting it into strips fairly quick work.

The part that I am not sure on what to do is the stairs. The carpet is sliding off the staircase in some areas, but there was an adhesive used so that the backing to the cheap carpet is stuck to the wood.

I found an adhesive remover on Lowes online store, but it only mentions that it is safe to use on cement and vinyl. Does anyone know the best way to remove the adhesive that would be relatively quick and manageable when it comes to odor?

The cat's safe room is in the basement with their litter and food, so I would have to close them off for a time to attack the stairs.

Heat gun, boiling water over rags over the adhesive (suck up the water with a shop vac), http://www.ehow.com/how_4843517_wood-floors-after-removing-carpets.html

Mineral spirits http://www.ehow.com/how_5163254_remove-adhesive-wood-floors.html
When pulling up the carpet PLEASE where a mask. The dust and whatever other crap can get into your lungs.
As for the adhesive..I've used a sharp blade and scraped the glue off...or Goo Be Gone, it works great, but the smell is a bit much. I have set up a fan while using Goo Be Gone and it airs out fast, but sure is strong at first. And yes, mineral spirits work good too, and are cheap.

I just finished taking down all the plaster and tile in our bathroom, bye-bye baby blue tiles!
I also just went to the doctor's office today to get 4 stitches taken out of my leg. Last week I picked up a large piece of plaster with some tile on it, the piece split in half and cut my upper leg. At first I thought, oh, a little scratch, but no it was a gash. So off to emergency and 1 1/2 hours later I was all stitched up (for free) and on my way to finish cleaning up my early mess.

So good luck with your handy work and be safe!
