A small, insignificant teacher rant I must let out...

As a teacher I fully accept that I must put in time during the summer to prep my room and my program. I have never begrudged that, and go in on my own schedule (since my summer is unpaid time anyway).

This year, my division has taken our classroom keys over the summer, locked us out of the copier and computer lab until Wednesday of next week, and given us the Monday of that same week as the first day we are "allowed" back in. Kids start Sept. 8th.

I'm ticked.

I know I have to do my work in advance and be ready, but since they are not paying me for my time, I really resent them directing me when I must work for free.

I leave tomorrow, and don't return until Monday night from Vancouver, and really wanted to get most of my stuff done this week so that I wouldn't have to work all next week (again, my time, for free) to get ready. I always give myself a few extra days for the Labour Day Weekend, after all, I'm technically on my own time anyway.

So there. I've ranted. I went in again today (the custodian always lets us in) but had access to almost nothing, and feel so far behind. Grrrrrr. The two days I've already put in were almost as useless! All this, on my holidays, and they're now basically scripting it so that they direct me on when I must work for free. Sigh. Yes, I know, I keep repeating that point, but sheeeeeesh!

I know, in the grand scheme of things not a huge issue, but I needed to vent.

After 23 years teaching business and 10 as a school librarian I am sooo enjoying the stress free life. I don't think people realize how stressful the school business really is...they did the same to school librarians...we used to get 2 weeks to setup and closeup and with budget cuts they just cut us for the two weeks...they knew we would stay at the end of the year to finish everything as well as come in early to get ready for the teachers...dedicated people do their job and rarely get paid for it. Retiring not only saved money in taxes, gas, car, clothing but lots in regards to how much I paid for to help the children and my own instruction. This is my third year of not starting back...I thought I would miss it but am pleasantly surprised that I am not missing it at all...every year seemed to bring something else...my janitor couldn't come until 7:30 am and my principal wouldn't give us a key to get into the building...there was about 10 of us used to coming early at 7:10...I really needed the time in the library as students came in at 7:45...a real aggravation...all I wanted to do was work free so I could do a better job. Bless all the teachers...they really are special and work so hard...hopefully you will have some great students this year and it will make up for this rocky beginning. Best wishes for a great school year!
Our kids started back on the 23rd.
I still resent the entertainment businesses in texas pushing through legislation that dictates when we can start - I loved getting out in May, starting back in early August and having a Fall Break. South texas will never get my vacation dollars.

We get one day of prep before school starts and one day after the kids are out. Any other time is not only unpaid, but no AC. Last Saturday I had to work on medical forms - only 104 out - and inside. We have a new principal, so the building was painted. Everything had to come off of the walls and out of the cabinets. Ugggh!
And we are forced to attend a Convocation ceremony. While it is fun to see friends from other schools in our District, we all tend to sit and bemoan the things we could be doing. And we had to participate in a Flash Mob. Ugggh

So you have my sympathy.
It's not insignificant: you should have the right to organize and set up your classroom on a schedule that makes sense for you and allows you ample time to prepare.

I am afraid to ask what a Flash Mob is, but I do want to know. I think.....
How frustrating! My friend teaches elementary school and has similar issues. You're just trying to be really prepared, in order to have a great year, and it seems like there are unnecessary roadblocks to achieve that goal.

Hopefully, everything will go smoothly.

Oh I remember those days!! Spending time for 'free' to get the classroom ready for the students! Too bad that they want to dictate that too! Best wishes for a smooth start to your new school year!
