nosing

chiquita has begun nosing to get what she wants. She presses her nose up against a hand and then walks to what she wants. Or noses us to get pets. She also has begun OVER-sniffing us when we get home. I get sniffs and I get really wanting a good whiff but she will not peel her nose off of us.

Could she be beginning to smell better (literally have more use of her nose)? I realize that is a little bit silly of a question. It's just that her nose seems to be on hyper drive. Before I could have put food on a table and she wouldn't have even noticed it. Now, it's all sniff sniff sniff smell to find out where that goodness is coming from. Why the change? Anyone have some thoughts?

mine always greeted me at the door like that to see where i'd been and wth i ate and if i petted any other furkidz. :D
Chowder started sniffing the ground more at 6-7 months and by 7 months was using her nose TONS more. She does the same things your pup is doing. At times it's cute, at times she till get her nose in my hand even when I'm holding something.
Oscar is much more "nasally oriented" :) than our first sheepdog, Quincy, ands we always attributed it to his deafness, and a heavier reliance on sense of smell. And now that I think back, he did become more tuned into scents over time. Now, he's like a Bloodhound. When we are out for a stroll, he tends to walk with his nose to the ground, sniffing, rather than with his head up, looking around. Lucky for him, I am paying attention, as he's almost run into trees, parked cars, fire hydrants....

We often get poked with the large black nose when we are not paying attention to what Oscar wants. Shockingly enough, it usually involves food!

dogs are naturally "nasal orientated." I'd turn this new discovery into a learning experience. Given her many things to sniff and if there's one she really likes, turn it into a "bloodhound" game...can you train her to follow an odor?

I forget how their sniffers until I put on a certain body cream, suddenly Harry is trying to "clean me up." Something about lime coconut drives him nuts. I should separate them and see which one is the trigger.

Jack is a slob for lime.....margaritas and he wants his nose in the glass. (I don't share margaritas) All go nuts for cheese and lamb.

Yes, if I've been cavorting with strange dogs, I get the full sniff when I get home.
Susan, you'll appreciate this. Oscar's favorite thing in the whole wide world? Feta. He can smell feta INSIDE when he is OUTSIDE! (We call him our Old Greek Sheepdog.) Whenever my hubby makes a Greek salad, Oscar drools and drools.........

The sad part is that he can't have any feta, due to his IBD. :( It's a good thing he can't open the refrigerator.

Skeylo Kala! Good dog!

Mine aren't picky, any time the cheese box opens, they are right there.

I noticed our Pyr Shane associated the smell of red chile with cheese at dinner prep. As the Carne Adovada (pork in red chile sauce) waffed thru the air, he'd refuse to leave the kitchen. He knew the smell meant cheese for the doggies and he wanted to be first in line, an hour before the cheese box was opened.

I find that funny too. Our Pyr Auggie used to go wild for lamb. We used to tell him your supposed to protect them not eat them.

Frankie has gotten to be the same way in the last few weeks. His nose his gettiing him into alot ot trouble in the house. He never cared about food now I can't get him out of the kitchen. When Troy comes home, his nose is glued to his pants or bare legs. I always joke tell mommy what daddies been doing.  It must be an age thing when there nose comes into full throttle.

The nose and the clock. Pyr Glacier needs meds before bedtime. She will either nose us or stand in the kitchen and look back at us, "Peanutbutter Time." Then after a trip outside she trots (yes, 12 year old girl can trot, not far) off to bed.

Funny about the Pyr and lamb.......BBQ a leg of lamb, the grill would be surrounded by sheepdogs and Pyrs all slobbering. It was as if, "Yeah, I know it's hot but surely one of us can figure out how....."
