adult hair transition

Chowder's hair is really starting to change over at 8 months old. We brush her daily, are careful when bathing or drying her off not to rub the hair into knots, and use detangler on the matts before brushing them out (not combing them). Not matter what we do she it seems she has at least one new matt everyday.

We started to cut them out but some are really close to the skin. Any ideas? Should shave her even though she is only 8 months?

You could. It would make it easier to get through the transition and if she has some short spots where you cut mats away, it'll all even out nicely when it grows in. It isn't unheard of to clip her down at that age. A lot of people go through a similar experience as their dogs go through that change and clipping it down lets you skip right over that tough stage. It's easier on you and the dog. At the same time, if you're really attached to the coat (as I am guilty of myself), you don't have to clip her down either. You just have to work harder during this time and, if the cut out spots are noticeable later, some scissor trimming to even everything out.
She is going into the Junior coat from the puppy fluff and yes a very matty time. She still has another transition to go later on to the full adult coat, I say that is way more harder then pupper to junior coat. Neither stage is easy and if it gets too much with the matt fairies, clip down and start again.
Is 8 months to young? I always hear not to cut puppies down because their puppy hair is oils for their skin that their adult hair doesn't have.

I am thinking because it's summer I should shave her now so I don't have to do it in the winter. I just fear the age. I'll miss the puppy softness but the matts on her nose are just unfair for her

Nope, that's not true. You can shave away with no worries if you want to!

As Jill said - absolutely not true.
It's totally up to you if you want to put in the extra time and be a mad brusher for several more months, or do a puppy cut or shave and take a little vacation during this transition.
I shaved Aska at 9 months or so, and I didn't have to groom all those puppy changing matts :) !
I miss her coat though :(
But she's all growing back :)
Hank is 11 months today! :) His coat is starting to really change on his butt and back legs so we've been fighting mats for the last couple of months, but he seems to be losing A LOT of hair right now.

I'm finding little mini mat/tangles all over the carpet. Is it normal for them to lose so much hair at this time??
Chowder is losing a lot of hair during the brushing process. More than she used to. Today I put up her first top knot; we had been cutting the hair above and around her eyes prior because she was young and getting into everything. We are letting it grow now. We need to get her used to having it done

Even though Hank's a mix, I would say it sounds perfectly normal. That dead puppy hair needs to come out to make room for the new hair....so it will either get brushed out or fall out or even worse - get tangled with the new hair and make MATS!
Simon was nine months old when he got his first haircut
